I also liked how the action was instant in old games. I didn't have to go around in an opened world looking for stuff, nor read a massive story, solve a riddle, solve a puzzle, do a tutorial, or sit through irrelevant cutscenes before even getting into the fun and action. Back then, the fun and action was there the moment I started the game and I didn't have to go looking for it.

Yeah, that was one of the reasons I really liked Doom 2016.

I just have to pop in some cartridge into the console and the fun is there. No dlc no waiting for downloads and updates, no cinematic 10 minute intros. Retro games are perfect for modern day living and busy schedule. 😀

I have been playing a lot of old PS1 games I got from PSN and even bought physical copies from Netherlands (2 games only) and I honestly had no problems using D-Pads to play these older games. I even finished the first Silent Hill game on PS3 and 100% all of the original Spyro Trilogy. People who complain about outdated graphics or terrible controls of old games either never grew up with the older consoles or are just too consumed by modern gaming to even care about older stuff in general.
@Zeburaman2005 Жыл бұрын
Regarding early 3D games’ controls, the only minor gripe I have as someone who grew up during the 8 bit and 16 bit generations is when I try games I’ve missed out on. Like with the PS1 era Armored Core series that uses the shoulder buttons to move the camera/targeting reticule vertically, instead of the right analog stick. Or the way most Japanese games handled panning the camera, like pressing left to pan right, down to pan up, etc. My friends and I used to jokingly call them “jet controls”. As for graphics, I find that they were generally put to a better use in distinguishing what could and couldn’t be interacted with. If there is one thing that really pisses me off in modern games it’s non-interactive pretty scenery that act as glorified corridors.

Yes, that's exactly what I mean in the video. They either didn't experience them back then, so they cannot relate to how it was, or are just too consumed by the modern way of doing things. This video was meant to shed some light on this. People who want to play better games should look back and these things are the things they face as soon as they boot up a game from 20 years ago.

Another great video! Most newer games don't really do it for me either. The only "newer" games I've played recently were remakes.

Indeed. For example, Resident Evil 4 remake is good, but I still prefer the original.

For me the best thing for someone who wants to know the past of the medium would be this: * Change your mentality: you must be able to appreciate retro games in the proper context, if it is not possible for you to stop comparing them with the current standard pass on them. * Use emulators or PC ports whenever possible: We veterans are more tolerant with the graphic aspect and the controls but the younger ones are not and being able to have a higher level of customization helps more to enter that world. Part of this is if you have a motion controller using it in conjunction with programs like Rewasd or Joyshockmapper in games where you have to aim also facilitates the gameplay. It is my belief that if you like something you want to know everything about it including its past, you don't have to like everything but you have to have general knowledge to be able to appreciate the passage of time in that hobby and to be able to give more accurate opinions. Not wanting to know what the past of video games was like just because you didn't live it is like if someone who claims to be a cinephile said that he only likes movies from 2010 onwards and only if they are dubbed in English.

This is why full remasters like Crash Bandicoot and Demon's Souls are nice because it reduces Control Adapt Time with the smoother controls.

i find realistic graphic games boring, now games all look the same, especially unreal engine games. download 100gb games is awful.
@supersharpgamer Жыл бұрын
Exactly. I can tell a mile away, yep, that's an Unreal game. That's one reason I prefer to have my games on disc, but in the days of day one patches and broken games, it's a futile battle. I really miss the days when I popped the disc into my PS2. The game played from start to finish with no problems and without asking me for more money.
@GrumpyCat97 Жыл бұрын
@@supersharpgamer indeed, i miss those times where you just put disc into console and play. and online features were optional. also retro games has cheat codes to unlock everything in game, nowadays you spend real money to unlock content

To be fair the lack of free camera usage is not a problem in the huge majority of games/situations... I think in many instances the positioning/movement of the camera makes the games even more cinematic/scenic (e.g. old Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, GTA I & II, Zelda Ocarina of Time and Mario 64)

@protocetid Жыл бұрын
You don't like modern games because they are not designed with the mentality of the past, and you don't buy the ones that are? Studios aren't going to be incentivized to design them the old way if the sales are low, and the ones that do get made don't always have retroesque graphics. They sometimes have modern 2D art or budget 3D, also brand new indie games for classic consoles are on the rise for multiple platforms.
