Nice video. As an American, the Chaffinch is one of my favorite European songbirds. I actually used to have them in an aviary years ago. Their song reminds me very much of my native House Finch but it "tighter" sounding but has the same overall downward trend.

I live close to woodland in Manchester UK and lots of male chaffinch enjoy the hanging feeders in my garden. Now I know what the females look like I'll keep an eye open for them. It would be lovely to see the courtship dance. Thanks Liam

They certainly are in New Zealand. My wife has created a bird sanctuary, simply by planting the right flowers, trees etc and her reward has been the massive increase in all sorts of bird wildlife. We love to sit and watch as the chaffinches feed on seed heads and even off the feeding trays,.....simply wonderful,..... Allyn Hansen New Zealand

Thank you for this video 😊 I’m in New Zealand and was woken today to the springtime sound of a male chaffinch singing outside my window - sounded just slightly different to the one in your video, must be that kiwi accent 😁

We do have them here in Vienna, but they are not common. For Sweden (where i grew up and lived for some 40 plus years), it is among the most common birds there are. I love their song, when one hears it, it is SPRING! I feel satisfied for a week or so, and then I await the swifts - my favorite bird of them all. The chaffinches are a necessarily part of the build up. Great birds!

@@AShotOfWildlife Don't worry Liam; most teenagers think that's how thier dads dance when perfectly sober.. Recently I worked on an old electric river canoe called Shrike, so I looked up this bird on 'A Shot Of Wildlife'.. I'm lucky to work in my own little studio backing on to a little bit of woodland and have an extremely territorial Chaffinch. He spends March to July attacking my windows (obviously seeing his reflection) and I'm almost oblivious to it now. Have tried lights on, lights off, blinds down, windows open, cut out cats stuck on the window, but nothing deters the little scamp. At least I know it's only for a few months a year.

They joined the garden not long ago, but appear to be quite shy and passive, they will only peck what's on the ground, but I wish they could adapt to feed from a hanging or plate(raised) feeder, so i can stop tossing sunflower hearts on the ground.... the pesky pigeons peck all of them, furthermore will bully smaller birds... i'd say the same for robins too... seeing those passive and shy chaffinches and robins in my garden breaks my heart quite often because i'm worrying if they had their share..
