Established in April of 1907, historic Southgate, Kentucky derives its name from the Southgate family who were the southern gate protectors of London, England. The "Richard Southgate" monolith can be found in the Evergreen Cemetery in Southgate. Prior to the current City Building which was constructed in 1939 by the PWA, city meetings were held in what was basically a garage. You can find a pedestrian tunnel also built by the PWA in Southgate that goes under U.S. Route 27 near St. Therese School for safe passage for adults and children to the other side of the highway.
