You should always ask any questions that you would like to know. That is why we are coming to learn diving from scratch. Dont punish someone asking questions. That is process of learning. Some ppl just dont know stuff especially some scientific aspects.

I would say that a lot of the questions I have been asked that some people call stupid were actually rather endearing. And I find that most people that bring up stupid questions asked by others are usually the people with the most fragile egos. A few of these people I have seen do dangerous things because they were too frightened of appearing unknowlegable to ask a simple question. We often foster false assumptions before being educated. It's simply called being human. Not necessarily stupid.

Okay I have a somewhat silly question to ask Why are fins not called flippers? Is it just a social thing that developed because divers wanted to seem more professional? I can't find any info on where this "fins not flippers" thing started

Oxygen is not flammable! Oxygen does not burn. It is an oxidizer. Oxygen feeds a fire, so it's dangerous to use around something that is burning because it will help the fire burn much more quickly.

That's not a stupid question. That's an indication of poor instruction and poorer briefings. Seriously, does nobody get that none of these "stupid questions" should ever be asked, because even a minimally adequate instructor should begin by asking students to please hold questions until the end of the teaching session, and then should - teach?? How TF is any student ever having the opportunity to ask an instructor a question that contradicts what is generally one of the first things taught to new divers? I think any instructor who has actually been asked any of these "stupid questions" needs to recognize their own incompetence.

In my scuba class the snorkel ? was asked and our instructor had made a 5 ft.. snorkel for us to try it opened our eyes for sure just how hard it was to breathe after a ft. or so under the water.

I'm a very poor swimmer; I had to take the alternate swimming test for my Open Water class. So the answer is actually no, you don't need to know how to swim in order to snorkel or scuba dive, but it helps.

Depending on context and what they really mean by this, it might not be quite that stupid. If by "swim" you mean be able to go into a pool where your feet don't touch the bottom, take your hands off the wall, and not instantly drown in a panic? Yes. If by "swim" you mean be able to do a 6 minute 500m freestyle? No.

I remember being asked if one could attach a regulator to his home compressor so he can take it out to his boat to clean barnacles of the hull. After the first shock wore off I answered. Yes, once and then all your problems will be forever gone after you inhale all that tasty machine oil. Mind you I was teaching a gas blender course for nitrox and trimix at the time. Those tiny tidbits reinforce my decision to stop teaching years ago. I just can’t deal with stupid.

At about the 2:35 mark, you commented that oxygen is “extremely flammable”. That is not the case. Oxygen itself is not flammable and cannot burn. Higher concentrations of oxygen only cause flammable fuels (oil, paper, wood, people,etc) to burn faster. I’ve argued (and proven) this fact dozens of times.

The kit is really dear. You could just do your open water course and then just hire the kit. If you've not been diving before then lots of places offer a free try dive.

Are you actually saying, re: snorkels, that the reason snorkels can't be 5 feet long is because people don't have the muscular strength to breathe in all the air in the tube? It is hard to tell the difference, at times, between serious comments and silly jokes you are making. Please tell me that you do in fact understand why snorkels are not longer than they are... :/ I have dozens of other comments I'd like to make, but I will refrain, except one thing: The very idea of "questions you should never ask" any teacher is directly contrary to the concept of teaching. Go ahead, ask me anything. The most arbitrary and capricious question is still an opportunity for us all to learn something. Especially you, the instructor. Because, if you think about it, if your student asks you a supremely silly, stupid, or non sequitur question, then you have somehow failed as a teacher and leader. If your students are asking stupid questions as you prepare to get in the water, then you have failed to properly brief them, and/or failed to command their attention and trust. That's one explosive gas mixture right there. Have fun blowing up. Hydrogen is used in some very deep diving gas mixtures, but it's quite rare. Air is about 21% oxygen 78% nitrogen, and 1% other gases.

Alright I've got one but this happened a number of years ago so I might not be able to retell it word by word but here is the short version. Situation: On the dive boat heading out to the dive site and it starts raining. A girl, just newly taken her OW points out that it's starting to rain (earning a "captain obvious" award) Me: yes it's a bit of a drizzle but no worries. Girl: what about the gear? Me: It's supposed to get wet. She realized her own question and her face took on a natural shade of pink any mascara manufacture would envy to replicate ;-) To her credit, once she was in the water she was a pretty decent diver for her experience level with good potential if memory serves me right :-) PS: No it's not just one of those old tall tales, it really happened.
