Be attentive underwater specially for sound signals like banging the tanks, shaker or Air Horn. Maybe your buddy is asking for help or wants to tell you something or wants to show you interesting marine creature.

I'm not an instructor, just a lowly rescue diver, but I have a few. Know your hand signals. I shouldn't have to ask you for your air, have you look at me like I just sprouted gills, then either point at my own SPG or swim up to you and look at yours to see how much air you have left. Don't over focus on your gauges/computer/compass. Swimming 'off course' slightly isn't the end of the world, you're not going to have 2000lbs of air one second and 0 the next, and ascending or descending 3-6 inches or even a foot while you swim is not going to kill you. Besides, someone could be trying to get your attention to look at something, because you're about to swim into something, or there's a fish near by that you may want to keep an eye on. This one's more of a pet peeve, but, don't surface if you have 1500lbs of air left and then use the excuse, 'I just wanted to be safe'. That tells me that you didn't pay attention to your learning material when it came to air consumption and how your cylinder works. Know how to dump your air. If we're 70 feet down and I look up and you're 10 feet above me, steadily rising, and looking at me like you don't know what's going on, I'm going to swim up to you and dump your air for you, something I shouldn't have to do. What's more, don't try to prevent me from doing so or look at me like I just kicked your dog, because I'm basically stopping you from having a bad day and ruining everyone else's.

As an instructor we have plenty of gas. Err yeah right. I have plenty of gas for me you mean. But when the $hit hits the fan that "oh look aren't I good guiding a dive to 40 metres on a single 10l" tank won't help the poor victim. Dive guides are often the biggest problem which is why I avoid guided diving wherever possible.

My dive guide was lightly banging his tank, and I didn't hear it just a few meters away because it was light taps. First dive on a Discover Scuba and I had no idea I should listen for the sound. Saw he was banging the tank when I reviewed the 360° video later. Missed a stingray and a shark because of it. :-(

A dive guide asking how much air you have left doesn't really mean you haven't been checking it yourself. I check mine like clockwork, but still appreciate the guide checking in as well. I would take that one off the list.

Shiny GreninjaYT first off, it’s dangerous. Even a small amount of air can cause huge results, and therefore an uncontrollable ascent. Also, as you ascend, the air expands, so you would keep going faster and faster to a dangerous rate of speed. It also does not allow you to stop, whether for your buddy or a safety stop, not to mention a host of other reasons

Lol. Did a couple of Discover Scuba dives in Cozumel. Was flitting around like Dory. I used my hands a lot to stabilize and maneuver, but thankfully wasn't trying to use them for propulsion. Still used up my air a little faster. Side note: Got down to 100 PSI by the time we were back in the shallows. And yes, I was keeping my dive instructor apprised to my air level. When I hit 1300 PSI we turned around to go back to the pier. Anyways, I went to surface because at 100 PSI I could tell the air was getting thinner, and I discovered I had been swimming just below surface. Like my tank have been breaching the surface intermittently. Felt like an idiot because I had been at that depth for 50-100 PSI, worried about running out of air. Switched to my snorkel and kept going like nothing had happened. Wife laughed at me back on shore when I told her.

#simplyscuba #10thingswekeepsaying, 1.) s.i.t. is 1hour minimum 2.) no alcohol during s.i.t. 3.) its 24 hours of desat even if your computer says ok to fly. 4.) having sunblock near the eye can be painful. 5.) fins are ambidextrous. 6.) kiddy shampoo is better than commercially available defog. 7.) being relaxed during the dive can conserve your air. 8.) get a better lanyard for that camera and torch. 9.) a.o.w. cert. dose not mean you can go 40m and deeper. 10.) fun diving is fun and safety in mind.

Practice makes perfect. As with most things, the more you do it, the better you'll be. I've found that focusing on controlling your breathing for a few dives is a good way to cement the skills so that they become second nature. Typically, I'll breath in deeply for about 6 seconds and then exhale for about 9*. It gets to the point where I'm using my diaphragm to completely empty my lungs. This has several effects: 1) it slows your overall breathing rate whilst allowing you to more efficiently use the gas you have. 2) it keeps you calm, as deep breathing usually does, even on the surface. 3) it keeps you conscious of the amount of gas you're using. I'll typically check my contents gauge every ten breaths (or roughly every 3 minutes or so). 4) it means your using more of the oxygen in the gas mix than you would be otherwise (as it gives your body more time to absorb it than you would get from shorter shallower breaths). And 5) it gives a consistent breathing rate throughout the dive, regardless of whether you just saw a really big turtle or your buddy just signalled out of air because they're sucking it down like a vacuum cleaner. *Obviously the timings differ from person to person as everyone's lung capacity is different, but find timings that work for you. The key thing is to exhale slowly, in a controlled manner, and empty (and fill) your lungs completely, to the best of your ability. The most important thing though is just to enjoy your diving!

You still shouldn't have your tank standing up even if it's your own equipment. If it falls over and breaks the pressure of 200 atmospheres will send it flying and it kill everyone standing where it is flying.

The DM 1did this, so I did the same... I’m a free diver and the ocean was a lake. DM 2 went nuts at me. DM1 says don’t do what I do. Like a parent, should lead by example. Don’t put me in a category of zero knowledge and experience. I was in the ocean herein this area before you were born DM1 and before you moved here DM2. 😂

Names are misleading more than anything else. AOW should be called OW2 and OW should be renamed OW1, and it should be advertised and taught as a "OW with a bit more involved stuff". That being said, no matter the course and name the will always be entitled people yapping about.
