Depends on the piece of work you're trying to use. Usually it's the owner of the work, such as the music artist or person who designed it. They would tell you when the copyright ends, and that is when anyone can use it without crediting.

You pretty much covered it all but I've been playing for 60 year and one night many decades ago we were playing at a new club, pretty much uncharted territory. Now these were the good old day when all the bars were still smoky. The place had a stage and right in the middle of playing my guitar singing a song this DRUNK DUDE walks up on the stage. He comes over to me, puts his arm on my shoulder and yells " Hey dude I'm going to sing the next song. OK?" I'm looking over at the Bass Player with a look of now what. He has no idea what's going on because he can't hear the guy. Not knowing what to do I just kept singing and luckily he just wandered off the stage quietly. No I don't miss playing out. Well maybe a little. Next time I'll tell you the story about playing in Berkley California and the guy with the hand cuffs. See all the fun stuff you missed?
