Good tips.A weird thing that I've noticed when I visited Roma a few years ago, is the tourists who are looking for fast junk food!! I mean c'mon you're in Italy! The best food is Italian food, so an important part of the trip to Italy is to taste the fabulous Italian cuisine, and not to waste your time and money on McDonald's and burger king!

I agree! I think it's always best to taste the cuisine of the country that you're visiting, and anyway we don't have much junk food :)

Last year I was in Pisa with my wife and she needed to use a bathroom, so we entered a mc donalds only because that was the closest option we had. Don't ask me if I had something to eat there, my grandparents are italians and I surely know how to eat properly. But one thing got my attention: the coffee machine. Yes! A big, wonderful and italianissima coffee machine inside a mc donalds!!!! Italy: the only place in the entire f***g world when you can get a (maybe not that much) decent cup of coffee in a mc donalds!!!

Hahaha it's still not considered decent cofee though! And I do the same for the bathrooms, sometimes they're hard to find so McDonalds is always a good option haha

Ordered cappuccino after lunchtime in Italy so many times it is hard to count, no complaints received yet. I know about the after lunch rule but I got used to more Austrian coffee culture and can not really change that much but I really like the taste of Italian coffee. Italians also do not have salty breakfasts which is hell for people with special diets. Not to mention that dinners in Italy tend to be very late for some Central and East European standards and also incompatible with some special diets too. Off course when out with my Italian friends I will try to follow the cultural rules, but I do not feel obliged to forget about my already existing habits and necessities. Rest of things I agree, I never messed up with food process, but habits and timetables are something completely different then that.

@@Japodian Well, I think you may be missing the point. No one will complain, but everyone will think it's a "one of these weird foreigner things" to do. The restaurant/bar personnel could possible even mock you behind your back for it. None of the things she listed is a "hard rule" in the sense that someone will scold you for doing these things. They are just so far removed from our habits to look weird if not borderline hilarious in our eyes. Cappuccino after mid day (or worse, at the end of a lunch/dinner) in particular is even perceived as vaguely disgusting way to mix foods that don't really go well together, by most of us.

Funny, the first time I saw someone cut spaghetti was at my house when i had Dutch friends over. Recently, I went out to dinner with friends from Milan and they were shocked when the waitress brought spoons for rolling the spaghetti. I always roll without the spoon :). In NYC anything goes and that's the beauty of it. We have so many different cultures in one that you can get away with it. Thanks for the tips, can't wait to visit one day :)

Sempre brava !! MANY tourists come to Italy to taste Italian food but don't have culture or knowledge about italian food and our " gusto ". It s important to know these basic rules : to connect the food and the right wine or to know the connections between the different tastes. This is not only the tradition , but the best way to enjoy our food . Is a good opportunity to come in Italy and to try to know the Italian food culture . In Italy food is culture and good balance. Americans : if you want to have a real Italian food experience, please forget your awful Olive Garden and search for an Italian real trattoria .

I grew up in a "little Italy" coal mining town in America, and now I know why my grandpa didn't like to mix courses together. But he must have not like vegetables that much because he would give them to me to eat. I bet that would have looked weird in a restaurant in an Italian city like Rome. We didn't have butter or olive oil with our bread but when the big salad bowl was empty all of us, to my grandmother's chagrin, would dive in with our pieces of bread to enjoy the onions and tomatoes in the bottom. We were savages! LOL. But the food in that little town was amazing, with people from all over the place from Italy. That was over 30 years ago, still Italians throughout, and happily the meat and deli shop "Pallucca's" is still operating and doing great after 80 years.

Well, the work times explains the dinner, i guess .. We usually do not have an extended lunch break, especially not in winter when we have very short days .. sometimes just 1 or 2 hours of sun a day. @@Alfadrottning86 We drink coffee during the entire day, if we fee like. Even after a late evening dinner, especially in restaurants (it's less common if dining at home unless you have guests). We just tend to not drink cappuccino (or any milk-based drink, really) after the early hours of the day, since it's broadly considered hard on your digestion. And we DEFINITELY don't drink it after a lunch/dinner, because mixing sweetened milk with our first or second plates is generally perceived as awful combination of clashing flavors.

Most of what she's describing in the video is something that you'll probably be able to order and get in Italy. None of these are "hard rules". They are just perceived as weird or funny (or at times even slightly disgusting) by many of us. That said, no waiter will ever refuse to serve you a cappuccino after 12pm or to serve you Parmiggiano for your seafood if you insist you want it. They'll just snicker a bit beyond your back at worse. Or maybe not even that because if they are in a touristic area they are used to it at this point.

Elisa, despite being very precise and accurate, does not show to have a good preparation in the kitchen. The ragu that exists in two versions the Bolognese and the Neapolitan. Normally the Bolognese is eaten with tagliatelle and is made with minced beef and pork. Don't ask for pasta alla Bolognese because many restaurants don't understand you.

Roman pizza is very thin and often not huge in size, so you probably won't have many issues eating at least half of it 😁 I'll try and do a vlog when I go to a pizza place so you can see it for reference. Some sacrilegious Italian could probably make a lot of money opening a chain of authentic looking restaurants for tourists featuring 'illegal' Italian foods. Spaghetti and Meatballs, pizza with pineapple etc. And for me, somewhere I could go at 3pm to get a flat white ...(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat_white). I don't know how I will survive my upcoming trip without a couple of flat whites every day! The waiters would also need to smile genuinely as you placed your order. Perhaps impossible...

I've been to Italy several times . I love Rome ...beautiful gorgeous city. I know Italy is one of the fashion capitals in the world... and it's all about fashion ...clothes ...style . I just don't get it how in the middle of summer in Italy when the temperature reaches near 40c ... people still wear pants. Is it a fashion 'don't ' that wearing shorts is not acceptable or very nice ??
@RomeInside
@RomeInside 6 жыл бұрын
Adults (both men and women) don't usually wear shorts in Rome, but you can see tons of teenagers and twentysomething wearing them :) Women usually opt for skirts and dressed and men for light fabric pants, but I totally understand the struggle, that's why I hate Rome during summer! So definitely feel free to wear shorts if you can't stand the heat as much as I do haha
@lshin80
@lshin80 6 жыл бұрын
@Mark P Up until the 50's, pants were exclusively reserved to adults, while shorts were only for children and kids. At 14 y/o you became a man, thus you were allowed to wear pants. An adult wearing shorts was considered ridiculous. Nowadays this custom has disappeared, and you can see many adults wearing shorts (especially younger generations), but somehow we still consider them "childish" and not very classy, hence many people are not comfortable wearing them. I'm 38 and I wear them when temperatures reach 30°C... but they make me feel like a brat.

So you don't cut your spaghetti, but do you cut your pizza? I think people from the US (in general, not all, of course) have this idea that Europeans (in general) are fancier than them and do everything in a fancy way, like cutting up their pizza instead of just picking up a slice with their hand. Do Italians cut up their pizza?

I struggle to even attempt any generalization involving the entire Europe, given than even some confining countries may vary vastly in language, culture and attitude. Hell, Italy itself is very heterogeneous and there are significant differences even from region to region. Sometime from city to city in a same region, as well. And I mean something like Louisiana-California serious levels of differences.

You mentioned pasta and breads/pizza in general, a frightening amount. I was told by friends that the whole "Italian carb parade" (not that that doesn't sounds delicious), was a complete fabrication, and that the diet was incredibly balanced and very fresh. I.e., mostly fish, veggies, meat, and yes delicious grain, but not too much. So, #1: is it easy to get meals that are 80% veggie?! For example, a typical meal I can translate to a restaurant that I love to eat, is a large bunch of steamed asparagus spears. Then 1-2 pieces fish, pan fried in olive or coconut oil, with a few dashes of Himalayan pink salt. #2: Would that sort of thing be available? #3: Also, is it easy to come by gluten-free, whole grain pastas and pizza--like brown rice pastas, I'd even splurge on whole spelt?! If not, #4 are simple lentil and/or bean dishes easily available?! Lastly, I'm afraid to ask this, lol. #5: Is it easy to find food without the nightshade veggies: Potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, bell peppers, chilli peppers and paprika?! I can have a TINY amount of the tomato and peppers if I must. But, I'll get sick very quickly if it's more than a tablespoon of one every few days.

MissJessyeNorman there is a huge variety, just take a look at the menu before going in. Italian food caters to the Mediterranean style , so you will find great sources of fats, proteins and vegetables. Again, check the menu before (usually displayed outside the restaurant). Pasta and pizza are a part of almost every menu as they sometimes had as an entree.
@MissJessyeNorman
@MissJessyeNorman 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your kind response. I'm glad to hear my friends were right, and that the Mediterranean style IS indeed served throughout. I'll look for the places that'll make it easier to focus on the proteins, veggies and fats, as you say--and just ignore all of the pastas, pizzas, tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, cheese and peppers. I suspect it won't be too difficult =) Thanks Again, or Grazie Mille xo

What I do in these videos is GENERALIZE and talk about things that work for the most part of Italy. I think you realise that it would be impossible to talk about every specific exception, right? I agree with you that there are many "experts" talking about Italy when they don't even know how things actually work here, but that's another thing and it's not what I do.

i think you are making people feel uncomfortable in Italy for no reason - if someone from USA wants to have a cappuccino at 15:00, the barista will make it for them, no one is offended. If you are more comfortable cutting your spaghetti as an adult because that's what you're used to, just do it! People will spend their vacation worrying that all the italians are judging them. Rules would be 'don't try to pay in Dollars' or 'you can't bring your gun with you' - this is just making people feel bad for not actually being Italian. Is your next video 'don't come to Italy if you don't speak fluent italian?'

Number 1: I've been doing for three years in my village and no one every said a single thing. They all knew me as the only English girl in the village. 😝 So I can get away with it. I don't want to look Italian. I want to be different and my Italian neighbours, friends and colleagues just don't mind. In my opinion many Italians don't mind us non Italians keeping some of our traditions as long as it's not disrespectful. Like drinking coffee at 12pm, it doesn't disrespect anyone. I actually find many Italians actually like to know about different cultures or foods. The village where I live has a small number of Afghans, Syrians and Kurdish. We all get on just fine with our different cultures. The main thing is having good manners in Italy. Not all Italians are thinking how you do. 🤔 So I don't know why you think it's ok to speak for every single Italian. 🤔

@RomeInside

The concept of safe can vary. Would I walk alone in an isolated narrow street at night? I mean, I do, but I wouln't recommend it. But this applies for most cities in the world... But if you're in the centre and you're walking to you restaurant for dinner at night, I wouldn't say it's less safe than if you do the same during the day.
@TucoBenedicto
@TucoBenedicto 5 жыл бұрын
Everyone. And "the streets are not safe" sounds like some sort of hyperbole, close to a scary tale for kids. There are probably dangerous, poorly frequented corners that would be smart to avoid when you are alone at night, but statistically the chance of being assaulted tend to be virtually non-existent. Not to mention what counts as "after night" in big crowded cities is probably closer to "2am to 4am" rather than "early in the evening", as 7pm would qualify as.

Hello Bella , please allow me to explain, Italians and Italy for years , around the western part of the world , were not held in high regard. Italians did it to themselves in World War 2 , they could not even lose with dignity, so Italians , were laughed at , just watch the movie Sarah, with H Bogart.I recall many years ago , my cousin visited from Italy and he was trying to meet ladies from The United Sates and Canada and he did not speak English. The ladies laughed at him and walked away, he did not know that Italians are considered to be a joke and a bunch of clowns, Have you ever heard of the names ,Whop, Dago and Guinea?, that is what they call us , not very nice names.Also the nasty jokes in english about Italians. I am aware that many Italians do not like arrogant people from The United States, but if it wasn't for The United States in WW 2 , Italians would be eating German food.

I think we had take away pizza for decades at this point, so I'm not sure what are you even rambling about. American-like fast foods are also rather common (especially in any at least moderate sized city) and your assumption that we don't love to mix some sorts of foods because "we never tasted them" is silly at best. It's just that we tend to have very strong opinions of what tastes fit well together and what really don't. We care about matching flavors in certain ways a lot.
