It would be interesting to see if the internal oil temperature of the differential is any hotter with the heavier gear oil. If the heavier oil runs hotter, you may not be getting as much benefit (higher film strength) as you expect. The difference might be insignificant too, with the heavier gear oil only running a few degrees warmer. Testing this might make for an interesting video.

It was pretty easy with a inexpensive hand pump from harbor freight. The differential fluid was dark after 90k miles.
@peterbruschi86906 жыл бұрын
BrianNC81 Interesting. When I changed the diff fluid on our '66 Bronco it was as gold and smelly as the new stuff that I was putting back in. Truck's been in the family since new and my old man said it had never been done. The diff fluid also looked fine on my Subaru at 60,000 miles, but it's cheap enough and I suppose it could be different on a molecular level.

@@BrianNC81 if you feel like spending for the extra fluid, you can just 'flood' the diff with new fluid, until the oil fluid goes out, and just the new fluid drips clear.

Are there are situations where a heavier oil can be detrimental? I'm running double the factory power level in my Evo X, but have been hesitant to change up from the recommended fluids.
@EngineeringExplained6 жыл бұрын
Well it's hard to know if the flow characteristics of the new oil will be worse for the differential. In this case, I leaned on the expertise of the builder of this differential (PuddyMod) who guarantees his work and his built hundreds of these. His experience in testing out various oils led him to the recommendation based on the wear of the differentials he sees. It's a good question to ask the company you buy a diff from, as to what oil they'd recommend for higher power levels.

@ChrisEckeard6 жыл бұрын
Yes there are situations were a heavier oil can be detrimental. Heavier oil in smaller motors will bog them down reducing power and creating more heat which causes wear and shortens component life. The bogging down will be most noticed in engines that operate a wet sump oiling system as the crank shaft spins through the oil sump, but would also show resistance in dry sump systems. A heavier oil actually boggs down all engine sizes as seen in reduced fuel economy, but other demands require the use of heavier oil such a mass, displacement, cooling, use, and power adders. That realty applies to your own vehicle. With double the power means ~double the heat and double the mechanical load. This requires a heavier oil to help protect the mechanical load while keeping the correct viscosity under heat. As shown in the videos diagram , heat changes viscosity and correct viscosity is needed to maintain enough flow and pressure. Do your engine a favor as well as your wallet. Go to a heavier oil, make sure it's synthetic, and change it often. Remember to check it often and regardless of brand, fresh oil is the best oil.
@csechrist16 жыл бұрын
As is obvious from the video it is a good idea to do an oil change on the diff. after the first couple hundred miles; what is the procedure after that, especially under high-load conditions such as track driving? Maybe a video soon on any special lubrication requirements inside a differential as opposed to the engine and why it doesn't need to be changed as often?

Different viscosity in the diff will change the locking action since it's a torsen diff. The change is subtle, as the difference in viscosity over a straight 90w and a 75w-140 isn't that great. That said, I use 75w-140 in my S as well, and never given me a problem.

This may be a completely unrelated question but in service information I've seen more than once to do figure 8s in a parking lot with a LSD after a rebuild or fluid change. One of our TSBs involved changing rear gear oil and doing figure 8s in the parking lot. What's that about?
@EngineeringExplained6 жыл бұрын
Ahh okay, that seems logical. Doing figure eights would force both sides of the differential to (at different times) be faster than the other side. This would put it through its full range of motion.

When does an open differential differentiate? Assuming equal tire pressure, road conditions etc. How much difference in conditions does there have to be to make one side spin faster than the other when not turning?
@EngineeringExplained6 жыл бұрын
When you're not turning (open diffs are great because they allow smooth turning, which happens frequently), they tend to rotate at the same rate. Only if one side loses traction will they be at different rates, in a straight line (or if the tires have different circumferences).

Hey Jason, awesome Videos. Could you do a Video about why tires grip up at a certain point even though torque increases most of the times? So I mean you launch the S2000 at 4500rpm and until 5500rpm the wheels keep spinning if you floor it. But then they somehow grip up even though the engine has a higher torque/hp at 5500 than on lets say 3500 while in SAME gear. Thanksn
@EngineeringExplained6 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what you're asking, could you clarify your question a bit? Will try to help!
@GetTheBugSpray6 жыл бұрын
I think what he's asking is when you launch a vehicle say at 4500 RPM, you get the initial tire spin (like a rolling burn out) where the tires aren't quite gripping the ground, but when you keep applying throttle and your engines RPMs go up to like 5500, they eventually grip the ground and roll/accelerate like normal. The question is, why does this occur even though the torque output differs from the start when the tires spin, and the end when they finally get complete grip. This all being in say 1st gear. I would think it'd have to do with the speed being different where the initial launch is overcoming the inertia of the vehicle and the speed being almost 0, where as time goes on and you gain speed it allows for the wheels to now spin in a certain threshold at the speed before losing traction.
@davidhagersten84476 жыл бұрын
It is probably several factors that cause the early tire spin. For one there is alot of stored energy in the fly wheel and the engine before releasing the clutch. This means that there is alot of momentum built up before relasing the clutch. This gives a much higher torque to the tires momentarily contributing to cause the tires to spin. On top of that there is a big speed difference between the ground and the tires when the clutch is released forcing the tires to spin according to the gearing. Spinning tires have less grip (coefficient of friction) than rolling tires. So at higher speeds the tires have less relative speed difference to the ground therefor having rolling friction instead of sliding friction while the stored energy in the fly wheel and engine are used up. Conclusion: It is much harder to acheive spinning tires from a rolling start than from a stand still.

aljowen yes, it's new. Funny. The dealer said, psuh the car in all rpm zones so the engine learns from my driving style. I don't know if it'll be written in the manual. The dealer doesn't really know that car well. He told me that the engine has two turbochargers. But it's a twinscroll turbo. And I've never heard that a brand new car has to be pushed in every rpm. But I don't know good enough. I think he said, that the engines run for about 500 km (I think to get sure that the customer gets a good engine) before they hand it out to me. Thanks

Engineering Explained ok jason i will try rev matching . thanks for your help !
@metaleggman186 жыл бұрын
Engineering Explained that sounds about right. Unless you have actual gear problems (like I did with my 09 Lancer from the factory), you're much more likely to notice it on those down shifts.

I've never seen people put diff oil that has lsd additives into the s2k diff. I heard it might damage it
@EngineeringExplained6 жыл бұрын
Pennzoil's is a fairly low percentage of LSD additive, it's not going to harm anything.

Is a welded diff a good idea for drifting or not???
@JarHeadP36 жыл бұрын
For drifting, absolutely as both the rear wheels will be spinning at the same speed all the time making it easier to initiate and control oversteer. For daily driving, i cant imagine it being pleasant.
@EngineeringExplained6 жыл бұрын
If it's a dedicated drift car, it's not the worst idea. But I think a proper LSD is a more logical decision, as it keeps the car very drivable while still offering great drifting characteristics.
@mxerable6 жыл бұрын
I drive an old merc with a welded diff. If you are drifting for fun, go for it. But if you are serious in the sport and have enough power in your vehicle, i would prefer a proper lsd. Dayly driving it is a very bad idea. Think of an slightly wet street. You will be kicked out all of a sudden. And get into a parking spot isn´t fun either.

Yes, but drifting is not a good idea.

When is a Engine more efficient? High rpm and low throttle or low rpm and high throttle?
@EngineeringExplained6 жыл бұрын
Neither of those are very efficient modes, but from a brake specific fuel consumption standpoint (BSFC is your fuel economy relative to how much power you're making), high throttle low RPM will have a better BSFC. But there are reasons why you don't want to run super high load at low RPM (like LSPI).
@cristianaguina41286 жыл бұрын
Quick question, does draining diff oil after 500 miles apply to new cars as well? I would assume so. Btw great content as always.
@biribobili6 жыл бұрын
Does changing the final drive ratio affect fuel economy much?
@EngineeringExplained6 жыл бұрын
Well it will generally put the engine at a higher RPM, which tends to put it in a lower efficiency operating condition. BSFC (which correlates with fuel economy) tends to go down as RPM gets higher, so highway mileage will be affected by a higher (numerically) final drive ratio.

I don't get the part about not going on long drives. Doesn't short distance travel induce more load and wear on the on the system as it would barely reach optimum operating temperature? And wouldn't the amount of heat going into the system taper off and reach an equilibrium with the heat being dissipated at some point long a long drive?
@EngineeringExplained6 жыл бұрын
Once it's broken in, yes, your logic is absolutely correct. But if there are high wear spots that are creating a lot of heat, it's best to let them cool down, rather than prolong the high heat scenario. It's also good to have varying speed and conditions (just like for engines), rather than long highway miles.

Isn't 75w-140 actually a thinner viscosity, with a higher lubricating ability , due to more additives like zinc ?
@EngineeringExplained6 жыл бұрын
75W-140 gives you the viscosity grade. 140 at operating temperature is a higher viscosity than 90.

But not enough power to beat my turbo miata. Hey, as you put more power on the car, go into why engine mounts and differential bushings need to be upgraded. I had to learn that the hard way.
@EngineeringExplained6 жыл бұрын
I replaced the diff mounts when I swapped in the new diff, and in fact the original mounts were still fine even at 15 years old, so on that front I should be good!
@zfreak28086 жыл бұрын
I'm only running 8 psi on my 2.0L miata and the drive train hop in 1st gear at the strip is bad. All the mounts look good and it isn't a problem on regular old pavement, but the strip is so sticky and there is so much power in first gear that the whole drive train hops if the tires are allowed to slip at all.
@laosonick6 жыл бұрын
What kind of diff did you upgrade to?
@EngineeringExplained6 жыл бұрын
Still a torsen LSD, but from 4.1 final drive to 4.44.
@GarageSupra6 жыл бұрын
If you have a Torsen/mechanical diff DO NOT USE FRICTION MODIFIERS in your oil! Use only the recommend viscosity oil. If you have a regular clutch type LSD friction modifiers are ok. If you are finding you are overheating your diff oil use an aftermarket diff oil cooler setup,

How often should change the diff fluid
@EngineeringExplained6 жыл бұрын
My owners manual recommends every 15,000 miles, best to check yours to see what the requirements are for your specific diff.

Is it true that if you do not change the diff oil within the first 1,000 miles then not to do it because at that point the diff is used to the metal residue thus it will damage it if changed? I find it farfetch.
@EngineeringExplained6 жыл бұрын
Fresh oil is never a bad thing. Wasteful if you do it too often, but won't damage the vehicle.
