The capability of conveying a mood and immersing you in it is why video games are my favorite medium. It's not easy but when it's done well it's so awesome. Nothing rivals the fantasy forest mood like ori, or the dystopian unease like INSIDE. These games are incredibly consistent throughout, every aspect of the game is tailored to this mood. Deciding which mood you're going for early may seem straightforward but i think it's harder than people think. I've played indie games that felt disconnected because they didn't have a consistent mood throughout. Great video, and very cool that you showed some itorah footage. It's not the best game ever but i think it's underrated and quite fun

Ye, I arguably think 'theme, mood and consistent pace' are things that are often more important than 'cool mechanics, pretty art and unique ideas' but perhaps isn't talked about as often. Not to say I actually entirely know how to implement it well, but I do think it is important to try :) Ye, I haven't finished itorah yet, and agree it is a bit rough in some parts, but it should definitely have credit where its due because it does some things really well. When I first heard of it I was a bit surprised by how nice it looks given that I hadn't heard of it before so I agree that it is underrated in some sense :)

love your video and especially that you talk straight to the point ant fast :D most other videos on youtube, usually, you have to skip half of videos. p.s. if you put game names in video description , would be great, some games looks interesting :)

This video kind of came about because I started playing Skelemania and felt that it started incredibly odd, I haven't gotten that far into the game yet, in large part because I feel like the first impressions of the game can't possibly be showcasing what the game actually has to offer. I personally feel like you can't wait 30 minutes to make your game fun, or even 10 minutes for that matter. That in itself might be a bit of a subjective opinion, but I still think plenty of games miss out on a large audience because they make trailers or the early sections of the game too dull, and that makes people miss out on all the nice things you have added later on (the stuff you have actually spent time on making fun). With that said this video is a bit similar to a previous video of mine, but I hope that's ok :/

Of course it's okay😁. I doubt any of us felt it was similar to the previous one until you mentioned it. Besides, we pretty much consider this to be an elaborated topic, which of course makes it easier to get what you were trying to say last time.🙂

Thanks for all the great info and tutorials, I'm feeling inspired. I would love if you did an analysis into the art of Cult of the Lamb, I'm very curious how they pull off their unique style!

Ye, I've actually been wanting to cover it, so if I have the time to figure out how to set up something similar I might try and do it quite soon!

Anyone know what the game is at 4:35? I hear "run" but that's either wrong or not a great name to help find a platformer : p

Ahh sorry, i was going to put text on that name because i agree it isn't a very searchable name, but i forgot. It's called 'Run: The world in-between'

Your channel is invaluable and underrated. Now for my unpopular takes: I think Celeste, Jump king and Shovel knight are some of the most horrid looking games ever created, and it baffles me that they are so popular. It's always so demotivating to see. Gives a feeling of "why should I put effort on my game's artwork when they do the absolute minimum and are extremely successful..."

Hmm, I'm generally not a fan of pixel art, but I think I would have liked the style of celeste if it was done in hd (so same palette and design but higher resolution). I think shovel knight is more popular because it is such a good homage to the retro era. And jump king is probably popular because it is really a good game for people who like rage platformers, very much like getting over it with bennett foddy (and i think neither are really liked because of their art). With that said, I don't think they do all aspects terrible, it might not always be to our liking, but they still nail having a coherent and distinct style, making the whole package quite clear and memorable. So I will on occasion (quite often) use examples of games that I myself might not love the style of, because they still do some things quite well and we can still learn from them :)
