My wife will lead our horse while our young daughter is riding him. He will nip at my wife like he is trying to bite her shoulder. If I lead him he doesn’t do that… why is he doing it and what should my wife do when he does it to her? Thanks for all the videos!!!

not a professional; but i’ve done some research on horses that try to bite. what i’ve found out helps most people, you *bump* , not kick, the front of their shins every time they do it. then they will associate biting with a bump on the shin and (from what i’ve read) will stop.

Have someone video you and your wife ... look at the videos for what you do differently. Leading on a tighter/looser lead? Walking closer/farther? Walking more or less to the side? Using left versus right hand?

For whatever reason, your horse respects you more than your wife. Have her lead him without the kid on, and whenever he reaches his snout into her personal space, she needs to make him take a step back. I train colts and many of them get nippy from time to time. Making them take a step back helps me convey the message that they are never allowed to intrude on my personal space. Anytime they do, there will be a negative consequence.
