Think Twice Before Hooking a ~3m 200+ kg Bluefin Tuna from Shore - Popper Live Strike & PE10 fight

A day when 3m Bluefin tuna (200+kg) kicked my ass
I don't know did I got up on the left leg that day or what, but it was extremely hard to keep up the fish even 4 minutes on the line.
Directly from the strike I saw it was extremely big fish.
When hitting popper on the surface by my opinion fish had roughly about 3m length. It's quite thankless to estimate the size of the fish, but in previous situations I had very good estimates.
I didn't really have adequate response & plan, so I started behaving like it was regular tuna on the rod. Then short and violent runs started, forward me and from my side...
With a pretty strong and stiff Patriot design XTX76 PE12 rod it was very very hard to keep myself on the rocks.
In the end it resulted with unnecessary running, falling down on the rocks and tuna cuting the braid on the rocks.
Gear Used:
🔸️ Rod: Patriot Design GTZ World Combat XTX76 PE10-12
🔸️ Reel: Shimano Stella 20k with SOM 23k spool
🔸️ Line: Tasline Solid PE10
🔸️ Lure: Lazart Lures
Thank you for watching, and I'd really appreciate your subscription!

That top water strike was insane even on camera, I’m sure in your memory it’s even crazier. That was a tough loss, but let’s be honest hooking a tuna that big from shore is like showing up to a gunfight with a squirt gun 😂

Hooked up on a 12ft sturgeon once and when I saw the thing breach I instantly knew I was screwed! same exact thing happened. 😅 I stood no chance! all I was going for was stripper so at least seeing a sturgeon that big was cool but I'd probably have lost it even if I came prepared.

I had the same experience in Norway with a giant halibut. Threw out a half-pound saithe in a strait and hooked on something that took all line and snapped it like a sewing thread. Before I caught fish up to 20 kg but this was on a whole other level. I will never know how big it was.

I stood no chance... but for 3 minutes... we battled and I felt his might. Another time, a 12ft Hammerhead took my redfish. Nothing short of steel cable would have landed it... but I did get to engage with it for a brief time... feel its fury and power. Those are the moments. You got to live it... and caught it on camera. I lost a Lake Michigan-run sturgeon the same size. Of course they hit your bait on the bottom, so not as exciting as a top water take. Peeled my reel in no time before shaking me off. The power a big fish transfers into your forearms is a memory that will forever be imprinted on your conscious. When these big fish get away, there’s nothing to be upset about as they’ll pass on their genetics or give another angler that special experience. Tight lines brother.

The reel drag on the line steadily increases as the spool line diameter decreases due to the fish taking line (removing line from the reel spool). Therefore as the line diameter decreases, you must loosen the drag on the reel, otherwise the line will not be able to withstand the increased drag and will break. Regardless, the fish was too big to land from shore with that equipment. Excellent video. Loved seeing the fish take the hook!

You did everything right. Massive respect. I don’t think anyone can do any better than you. That fish is just too big and too powerful for anyone to land it from shore. Will need a braid line rating higher than PE10 and length more than 600m to stand a chance to prolong the fight but no guarantee to land it either. Please don’t feel bad . That is an experience of a lifetime. many people has dreamed of a bite like that …. Including me
@nasticivan

Tnx man, i agree with facts..yes thicker line but then there is problem of length on spools..this is how it is, simply they dont produce bigger spools at this time! 😊

I landed a 236.6 Lbs yellowfin tuna on a boat a 10 day trip with 26 fisherman. I used a braid 100lb with a 150 floro carbon leader on a live sardine. A 2 speed Okuma n a hybrid carbon rod. It took me 1hr 40 mins n I lost count how many times it crossed over the anchor line!! That was 2017 my personal best for tuna.
@vxphan2601
@vxphan2601 10 ай бұрын
@@localguy8 yes, you were on a boat which given you a higher chance to land the fish than from onshore location like this guy. If the fish spools you too much then the boat can chase after the fish to recuperate the fishing line easily. While this guy had no chance since he stucked on the rock onshore. Sound like you used a conventional reel type which would hold a lot more line to play with the fish than a spinning reel.

@localguy8 so a slower tuna, half this size, on a 2 speed conventional reel, from a boat. Basically that experience and this one are so far apart you almost can't call them both the same sport

That was a legendary hookup! Once i hooked a 60 piund spring chinook on the Hoh River, with my steelhead rod and 8 pound test. After 20 minutes, my buddy from Colorado told me to "hurry up and catch that critter." I told him my chznces of landing it were slim to none, and that I saw Slim float by in that driftboat 20 minutes ago when i hooked this monster. After 45 minutes, the hook pulled out. This guy had less of a chance than i had that day. Great video!

I hope your knee is ok. That looked painful. I think that people should just buy lightweight gear when shore fishing, unless they really intend to hook into a large fish. That way the fight is not so long and less line gets spooled out / wasted. I have been in lakes in faraway places (Canada) and gathered hundreds of meters of wasted fishing line. This is a global pollution problem caused by sport fishing industry. BTW this comment applies to all the videos I see of sport fishermen hooking into large fish. Also, glad to know the Bluefins still live in the mediterranean.
