I bought a 2019 Dodge RAM 3500 dually last year when they first came out because we have a large travel trailer and soon will be moving to 5th wheel now the kids are grown and I wanted to make sure we had no limitations when 5th wheel shopping. This thing has a cargo capacity of just over 5700lbs and it has a Cummins diesel. Great video!

Good video, I was going to suggest doing more of these with the other brands. But a easier version might be to have viewers send in pictures of their door stickers and payload ratings. This might more effective at getting people to understand their payload ratings. One it would force some people to actually look. Two, it would give an idea of what is on the used market.

I was within 35 lbs on one of them. The rest, I was off by 500 - 2000 lbs. The dually I was really impressed with the cargo cap. on it. WOW was I off on that one. Thanks for the very informative video as always JD.

Terrific video. Just bought an f350 and it has been an interesting experience.with the huge amount of misinformation. I actually had a salesman tell me that I could boost an F450 payload capacity by switching the wheels to 17”. I left that dealer and didn’t go back.

What would be interesting is how they'd fit 17s over the brake rotors....since that's why the truck has 19.5s. Also, downgrading to a lower loaded rated wheel and tire generally negatively impact payload... They must be magical 17s.

The cargo capacity sticker on the door is a good starting point. The “actual” cargo capacity will be determined when you weigh your truck as it is setup going down the road. Now subtract that weight from the GVWR listed on the other door sticker. That GVWR value will not change. My example: 2016 RAM 3500 SRW. cargo capacity value on door sticker says max 4074 pounds. GVWR sticker 12,300 pounds. Actual weight of truck with 5th wheel hitch in bed, 3/4 tank of fuel, 2 adults etc = 8840 pounds. So my ACTUAL cargo capacity = 3460. This is 614 pounds less than the door sticker. After weighing the truck and trailer, the actual pin weight is 2680 pounds. So I’m well within cargo capacity. As a side note, the trailer weighed 13,380 pounds , so the pin weight was exactly 20%. Very glad I purchased the 3500. Just my $0.02 to ad to this thread.

Exactly right, Mark. Best to get an actual weight since some of the payload sticker numbers have been shown to be off by up to 200lbs when they are put on a scale.

Very good video, I was thinking of a fifth wheel and started researching my truck and trailers, believing the manufacturer claims of 1/2 ton towable. While many fall within towing of my truck, my f150 only has 1878 payload, which is no where fifth wheel capacity, but most salesman will say it is. My f150 has a decent payload compared to most almost 1900lb for a 1/2 is darn good, but I ordered the upgraded rear for mine as I intended to tow with it. This video is a must watch so people understand the real towing capacity of their truck.

The pin weight on my 2018 40' Montana is 2840 lbs! the fifth wheel dry is 13,425. Loaded is around 15,000 lbs. Should be no problem pulling it with the 2021 F-350 Dually I just ordered.

Wow, great video. I own an F150 so I looked at the sticker and it has a1851lb. Cargo capacity. And 10200lb towing capacity. I’m pleasantly surprised. I had no intention on towing an RV but after I saw the numbers I would seriously consider a half ton towable.

Been shopping for trucks over the past month, specifically F-250s. I was pretty spot on with the ones you showed. The difference in the two diesel F-250s you showed was the higher payload model had the heavy duty payload package. I ended up going with a Lariat Tremor with the 7.3L, almost 3k of payload!

Dealers need to stock the Super Duty trucks that have the 6.7L with the High Capacity Trailer Towing Package as it raises the payload to over 3000 lbs. Without that option a 6.7L diesel F250 only can carry about 300 lbs more than a top payload F150. F-150 =1980lbs and F250 = 2300 lbs

Now you need to do part 2 of this experiment. Look at the trailer capacity sticker on the receiver hitch. The number on each hitch is different depending on how the truck is equipped. My own F150 has 1980lbs of payload and the hitch says 13200lb trailer capacity. I haven't seen many trucks equipped like mine. Most on the dealer lot are 7700lb trailer capacity.

F150s only have 2 hitches. Either the Max Tow hitch or 11,600, at least they do for 21.

What you left out that is important when figuring payload. GVWR. For example a 2.7 equipped F150 will have a lower GVWR than a 5.0 or 3.5 optioned same trim truck. A 2WD will have a 300 pound lighter GVWR than a 4WD based same trim truck. The two F250 trucks you posted can also have differing GVWR, one could be a 9000 GVWR derated option truck while the other can have a 10,000 GVWR. Same with the F350, there is a 10,000 GVWR option for them. Options play a massive part in payload, a base Lariat can have more payload than a 302a XLT of the same cab/engine configuration, and a base Platinum can have more than a 502a optioned Lariat. Just about any 2018-2020 F150 Lariat 502a and Platinum will be 1520-1580 depending on 4WD or 2WD. Anything with fewer options will have more. Limited/Raptor are not meant to tow so payload doesn't matter. Superduties as mentioned above can vary widely based on the GVWR option and trim. What I found extremely surprising is how low the F450 payload is. My 2012 King Ranch SB is 3441, and an F450 with only 1200 more? Is it derated? It's a 2017, should be higher than that, or does it not have the aluminum body?

Thank you for sharing the difference between SRW f350 and a DRW F350 . I’m currently looking at fifth wheels for my next camper and the one my wife and I picked out has GVWR of 15,500lbs at 41’ft long and extra wide body. I have been on the fence about going with SRW or DRW I know with the SRW I would have enough payload but I feel with the f350 DRW would be a much safer choice. Gives me more payload . which gives me a piece of mind. I would not worry about over loading the truck. Plus it will be more stable pulling the fifth wheel that we are looking at.

Very good video JD! It shows how much the payload capacity can change within a line of trucks due to the options. It would be helpful if next time you could show the other weight sticker as well and what options the truck had. Like the 250s were a big gap due to one probably having the camper package and higher GVWR rating option over the standard 9k lbs rating. The 2020 F350 srw have a new higher GVWR rating option to 12.4k lbs giving them that nice high payload, but all they did was add more front axle weight rating into that option. They still have the 7250lbs rear axle. If you tried to load a trailer with ~4k ish lb pin weight youd be over the weight of the rear axle quickly. I think GM has the best thing going with regards to trailers with their 2020 trucks and the new towing weight tag on that give your max weights for the different trailers and would like to see Ford and Dodge do the same. I have a 2012 F350 srw cclb 6.7 4x4 with 11.5k lbs max option, my payload is 3100lbs. I love my truck and it definitely fits my current TT towing needs but Ill be stepping up to a 350/450 to eventually pull my planned future tow hauler. I remember hauling 1,000 lbs of 50lb sacks of horse feed in the back of my 87 Ranger. I also remember noticing afterward that the rear fender on the driver's side had rubbed a nice groove in the side of that tire. I guess that was nothing compared to my dad pulling a trailer loaded with 18,000 lbs in his 89 F-250 w/ a 351. Had to start off in 4x4 Low to get it going from a stop. Things (and my knowledge) sure have come a long way in 30 years.

Maaan, that's insane. I have a 2020 RAM 3500 Mega Cab srw and the payload is 4106 for a single rear wheel. When I was on the lot, it blew my mind how much the payloads varied within the same type and trim of truck.

The F-250 capacity difference is most likely due to one being a 10,000 gvwr, and the other being a 10,800 gvwr. Both trucks are actually "capable" of the exact same, but it's a paperwork drill that makes the difference.

The payload on the F350 lariat srw diesel long bed threw me!! At 4561 i would have said 1000 pounds less!!! My 2020 F350 xtl crew cab short box with 6.2 v8/10 speed is 4239! That diesel must have snow plow and camper package and a gvwr of 12500.

I ordered a 2022 loaded Lariat. My dealer didn’t know much about equipment vs payload, must settle for their “packages” I added the things I knew would get my payload up and will add the extra equipment after market whic will be more expensive in the end.I’m paying north of 80k for this truck and have to settle for Fords packages.I didn’t end up with several things I wanted in the end( first world problems) but you would think they would be able to tell you how individual items affect your payload number.It should adjust every time you add an option just like the price adjusts.Anyways, truck ordered on 11/30/21 is supposedly being built today(5/16 /22. I’m told I’m lucky to get it so soon! It’s been an interesting couple of years.

The only reason the trucks are different is because you take the gross weight rating and subtract the curb weight you get the max load weight. All the load ratings are based against the curb weight to the max load.

I wrote the guess at the introduction of each truck Truck 1 1800lbs I had one with 6.5 bed Truck 2 2050lbs Truck 3 1800lbs Truck 4 2450lbs Truck 5 3800lbs(12400 GVWR) we both thought the same. We have a 2004 F250 4x4 gas (5.4) with factory tow package. It has been babied. Garage kept. We are going to start long trips towing a 24 ft Flagstaff 5th wheel. In a truck that age towing 7500 lbs what would you be concerned about causing trouble. What should we fix or replace? We have never had one issue nor has it acted or made any indications of any issues. We bought it new. Maybe you have you done a vid on how to baby old truck(with old drivers) and add on after market safety products would be nice to see in a vid if I missed it?

Thank you for a very informative video. I definitely had better luck with the super dutys than the F-150's...was WAYYY off guessing those CCCs. I do find it quite frustrating that it is difficult to 'predict' the payload capacity based on the specifications provided by each manufacturer. I have a 2017 F-250 PSD SWB CC with the Lariat Ultimate package. Based on Ford's brochure, I anticipated a payload capacity somewhere in the neighborhood of 2700 pounds, yet my yellow sticker indicates 2036. BARELY enough to pull my half-ton 5'er. Am looking to upgrade my truck in anticipation of a larger camper but have little idea what the actual payload capacity will be with a particular configuration when all is said and done. How does one go about that?

Is it possible to get the actual payload from the manufacturer for the exact truck you want to order before you place the order.? I know you can check online and get the towing and payload ratings but I don't believe it breaks it down by trim level and options.

I've been researching for a newer truck than my 08 Dodge 2500 since the sticker is only 1785#. I added a set of SuperSprings and some other items to improve it's handling but I'm unable to find the detail information for what my "desired" truck would have as the payload capacity. So far, none of the dealers are able to find the information either.

I was within 200 pounds on most of the 150's. Not so close on the 250's and way off on the 350's. I did start to wonder about the accuracy of the stickers though. For the Trucks that come with a factory sprayed in bed liner, is the payload calculated before or after it gets sprayed in? That has to weigh 40-50 pounds. It could be an issue with a relatively low payload on a half ton truck. Same thing with dealer installed options like running boards as an example. That has to be taken into account too. The payload could be off by quite a bit if several things are added after the calculation and the buyer may not necessarily be aware of that.

Just the difference between packages just like between 2 wheel and 4 wheel drive. That transfer case can change it up to 400 pounds if not more.

I’d hate be in one of those F150s with that Eco Boost 2.7 V6 loaded to its max capacity and be in town trying to take off to beat some traffic like it happens at times or trying to pull that weight up that bridge at Sulfur, La where it use to have a red light almost right at the very bottom of the west side. One of those maybe ok pulling something small but give me a larger motor and brakes over that small amount of fuel economy. I’ll stick with my ole 07 Ram 6.7 Cummins in the Crew cab dually 4x4 getting about 18-20 mpg at 78-80 mph and still be able pull those loads up that bridge easier than that F150 V6

I checked the ford towing guide for 2021, non of the f350 SRW configurations has a payload capacity above 4k, especially with the 6.7 diesel. Is it possible the label is mistaken? I would love to have a SRW diesel F350 with 4500 lb of payload.

People who don't study trucks think a f450 has a higher payload than a f350. They dont. The heavier f450 is supposed to tow more. But because the f450 is heavier the f350 has a higher payload

This is great, I guess most of the F150 within 3 to 400 lbs, and the F350 I guess it 5300 lbs but the F350 single wheel I said 3300 lbs but I was blow away to see it was 4500 lbs. Make me what to get a single wheel 2020 F350 but this is awesome.

I did OK. I don't know the F-250 and higher number hardly at all. 1. My guess 1650, under by 137. 2. My guess 1725, under by 256. 3. My guess 1890, under by 299. 4. My guess 2050, under by 798. 5. My guess 2345, under by A LOT. 6. My guess 2250, over by 592. 7. My guess 1825, over by 143. 8. My guess 1592, over by 23. I was almost right on the money here. 9. My guess 3750, under by A LOT. 10. My guess 5425, over by a good amount. I was honestly guessing at this point. The 2wd trucks threw me for a loop. I live in the PA, so that's just not something you buy here unless it is a summer-only rig.

Me too. Its got the new aluminum body which is 700 pounds lighter, and GVWR did not change between steel and aluminum like it did with the F150. I figured 700 more than what my 2012 has, 4100, wow was off by quite a bit.

So an interesting question the next time you talk to a companies engineers. The 3/4 ton trucks have axel ratings that would allow the truck to carry far more weight in payload than the sticker indicates. It looks like these trucks are fully capable of hauling more weight but are being artificially restricted much as the 9,900 lb GVR 1 ton is a paper restriction. Are these trucks actually capable of hauling more weight?

Is a CDL required to drive any of the HD models? If so, is it based on the pickup gross vehicle weight or the trailering capacity?

Depending on what the truck is used for. For a private, personal vehicle and/or to tow an RV or Farm trailer, there are generally exemptions in most states. A few dozen states require an upgraded license and I believe only 2 or 3 require a CDL.
