I always looked at Paris or London. However the cost of living was high. You need a very good paying job to live in these cities. Most world class cities are not cheap to live in.

Thank you for sharing your story! You've done so much in your young life so far! I'm 55 and have always lived in the USA, but I've dreamed of living in Italy for years. I'm finally taking steps toward my citizenship, and I visit Italy as much as I can. I will make it happen. Best of luck with your journey!

Ciao. My people moved from the south of Lazio…high above the Fiume Volturno on Monte Arrunci…most of the village left. I went ‘home’ in 2006…wept…proud…joined the local Italian society once home. My Italian is self taught…limited…best in an Italian restaurant. I cook Italian but not as well as my father’s people. I was a professore economico for 42 years…allora Sono in pensioners. America was good for our people.

Thanks for your vulnerability and honesty! As you know, we are in the process of moving to our 3rd country and each time is challenging, but also a tremendous growing experience. But I completely agree with you, moving abroad isn't for everyone and not required for a fulfilling life. :). (And if anyone is thinking of moving to Italy, Irene is an excellent language teacher!)

Aw Irene I totally understand your difficulties making meaningful connections in London, I really think it's one of the worst cities in the world for it. I've lived here 25 years. People here are always moving, like moving through their career, or only here for a few years while they work, or only working in the city but living like 2 hours away because London is too expensive to live in. It's hard! And it really is way too big! Loved the video!

Hi Irene, lovely video, but I have to say that happiness does not take a lifetime to achieve nor is it a journey. Happiness is actually a very simple concept but hard to achieve. Happiness is being content with what you have. Happiness is the sun in a blue sky over a blue sea or a perfect mouthful of gelato. Simple moments that anyone can achieve with the right mindset.
@dak2005vn
@dak2005vn 2 ай бұрын
I agree. As long as your basic needs are met, happiness truly is a mindset. Above all, one must understand the concept of gratitude. More to it all obviously, but if you are grateful for what you've got, happiness is usually a byproduct of that.

In the process of getting my dual citizenship and want to spend my summers in southern Italy. My grandparents were from Calabrian and Sicily so every food that Irene showed in other videos I remember eating when my Nona cooked. Interesting discussion! Right now I'm in a phase of my life where I'm feeling like my life is just passing by without me actively taking part in it, let alone enjoying it. I've moved around quite a bit for my studies, just like you. But I'm living in a cold rainy place where the climate doesn't motivate me to come outside of my house except for work. So I'm thinking I'm going to have to move somewhere South.

Brava! Just do it. Life is a struggle no matter where you are. Always try to make lemonade from lemons 🍋. Therapy is a most helpful tool. True, once you leave, it is hard to go home. We all regret leaving at some point in our lives but you must follow the open doors of opportunity. At some point later in life, regression might be desirable. A slower pace, a more grounded existence. Your own experiences will determine the path to take. Always a honeymoon initially wherever you go followed by second guessing. Take a deep breath and get through the difficult period before jumping to a regrettable decision. Time will heal, it always does. Life is only what you make it. Remember Irene: Mocha ci insegna, che prima di fare qualcosa, è bene brontolare. A little grumbling is good.

The point about being happy in your own country before you move is a new perspective I had never considered. We visited Paris and Italy in 2019, it was so great I now tell people, if I had visited in my 20’s, I would not have gone home. We Australians are so far from Europe and many believe it is the only place in the world. It’s not. Thanks for the video, you are a great ambassador.

Ho fatto il contrario ora, sono calabrese di origini ma cresciuto al nord. Ora che ho 34 anni e avendo la fortuna di lavorare online, ho comprato una casetta nel parco dell’Aspromonte. So, did you learn spanish living in sevilla ? i lived in london few years ago, belsize park area, north of primrose hill. What you said in the video is happening from a long time now in Italy. People leaving for a better future, abroad or going to the north of italy. It was like this 10 years ago, 30 years ago, 50 years ago. It's sad, it's like nothing has ever changed in italy. But you look happy when you're in italy, probably a mix between food, weather, and your family.

Ciao, I just came across your videos looking up going on vacation to Milan, I think. lol You are very charming and I see that you also help people learn Italian too based on your past videos. I have never lived anywhere outside of Chicago USA but my ancestors are all from Southern Italy (Calabria and Sicily). I give you credit for making the jump to traveling all over Europe to find yourself. I'm sure that you know that Chicago is home to alot of Italian Americans good and bad (Al Capone, mafia lol). I was thinking about going to see Lake Como, Venice, Milan and maybe Verona while we are there using Milan as the main destination to travel from. I have already been to Rome and the south as you say, the poor parts of Italy! Any suggestions would be helpful. Buona fortuna on your travels!

You definitely "grow up" moving abroad......I experienced 'culture shock' the first 3 months (I was told this was normal); then it levelled out and was ok; then it was fun; then it was interesting; then some ups and downs; then you get on top of things and cruise and feel at home.....all that took 3-4 years 🙂
