Always appreciate your thoughts on anything audio related, Angela-Gilbert. I find that things like total gain, output impedance / input impedance, speaker sensitivity, etc. are a good place to at least start, but I’ve also heard some combinations that don’t really follow those basic rules and sound fantastic. It’s nice to hear your thoughts on the subject. Very much appreciated. Thank you. 😊🎶💜

@@NickP333 Math is a good start. Ultimately, it is the listening to be the final judge. As I have stated in a couple of my replies here. I have used impedance combo to tune the system sound. When doing that, the math rules are out the window.

Excellent topic. This was reason I stick with RMe dac I can control output voltage for my Yamaha as3200. ( balanced connection) Dacs should have output voltage settings. Reviewers not mentioning about voltage outputs or gain levels . I learned how important to find balance between amps /pre amp gain , dac voltage output and speaker sensitivity level ..

Voltage level vs Gain in db isn't a very common topic but it is correct way to understand the loudness and over all system volume. Marketing departments have not been using it to inform the public. Therefore, reviewers has to use terms that the general public understand. Many of the reviewers are also not necessary has deeper understanding of the topic from the technical point of view.

Usually the rule of thumb is input impedance of amplifier / output impedance of preamp has to be a ratio of at least 20 , the higher the better , but I agree with the final judge being the listening test.
@angela-gilbert5 ай бұрын
Ratio of 1:20 is not even necessary. Higher is not always better, rather has lesser and lesser effect. Many applications allow much lower ratio and wouldn't hurt anything. As I have mentioned in the video, there are companies using 1:1 and they work just fine. When output and input impedance ratio get low or even goes into negative region, one can use to tune the system sound along with the length of the interconnects. However, in audio application length of cable usually has minimal effect of sound due to its low frequency range.

Timely…. As an avid diyer, the issue of gain is something I am just starting to dive into. First experience with a problem of too much gain, was with a single ended EL84 amp that uses a 7199 tube on the input. Well, it is insanely sensitive…. So much to learn….

@@angela-gilbertVery good advice! Being a perfectionist is one of my personality defects… Suited me well in my previous career. Music, electronics, audio gear and photography have been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Thank you for your thoughts. I figured "just hook it up" would be your answer, ha. Is there a formula to calculate voltage gain of an amp by using output watts and input sensitivity, or some other way as most do not give a voltage gain of their equipment.
@angela-gilbert5 ай бұрын
Ahhhhhh, I am becoming predictable to you. 😆😁 Yes, there is a formula to calculate voltage gain in db from power output and input sensitivity. The voltage gain formula is Voltage Gain (db) = 20 ((log) Output Voltage / Input Voltage). For a 200 watt into 8 ohms power amp, it is 40V into 8 ohms. If the input sensitivity of this 200 watt power amp is for example 2V. The equation is Voltage Gain (db)= 20 ((log) 40/2)=26.02db. Most will consider it is simply 26db of gain.

This may be narrow minded thinking? I bought a power amp and same brand matching pre amp. was an amazing combo. I sold the power amp and bought the same brand Mono blocks. Again perfect match. I would assume the manufacturer would do their best to make sure the gain was correct with both their amp and preamp. I am not inclined to mix and match amps and pre amps.
@angela-gilbert3 ай бұрын
@@GeneralLao The manufacturer will do their best to match the gain but what is gain matching? What gain is perfect? It depends on the output level of the source and also depends on the sensitivity of the speaker. There is no perfect match. That's what the volume control is for. With now a day digital source being such high output, some of the mechanical volume control doesn't have enough attenuation to keep the music quiet enough for some apartment condo set up. Or Music is being way too loud when thr setting at 8 O'clock. It is a more common issue now.

I thought that maximum power transfer is achieved when output impedance matches the load impedance? Whether or not this impacts sonic quality, I have no idea.
@angela-gilbert5 ай бұрын
@@StealthParrot You are correctly about the maximum power transfer. However, in the case of preamp driving a power amp at home use with relatively short distance, we want maximum voltage transfer..... mostly. In some exceptions, using impedance mismatch to tune the system sound is not unheard of. At least I have done it many times.
