Marc that was awesome... very Voltairesque but SPOT ON. I liked the way u described how we are quite unaware and not conscious of our grammar when we talk. Thank u for this.

I once asked a great saxophone player "What were you thinking during that solo?". He replied "Nothing" and I thought that he was being cocky and hiding his deepest secret tricks. As a scientist, I tend to overanalyse while playing - BAD IDEA. The truth is that there is no time to analyse while the bars are flying by and the band skips ahead. Play from the heart - scales, arpeggios, riffs will emerge "on demand" with minimal explicit thought. Keep to the form and trust yourself for the best outcome. It's not easy - I am still learning to "park my brain" while on stage. C'est la Vie !

I have recently been made aware that my fingers have a mind of their own(scales, chords arps e.t.c.) and try to drive my improv. While this is to be expected at a certain level of learning(training?) it is important to train the ears and the brain to take charge at some point. How to do it is the trick but just work at it seems to help some. Having a melody in mind is the first step to get this down.

Nice to have you back after such a long lay-off?

Yes indeed! Thank you. I've been working mostly behind the scenes (with mentorship students), but I'm ready to take the plunge and be more active here on KZbin for the rest of the year.

Hey Marc how’s it going?? I think to improvise you have to have a good knowledge of the material to do it and then you’ll can improvise, that’s alright or I’m wrong?? Marc you are a good teacher and have a good study program of music, I’ve been doing and I’m very happy what I learned congratulations cheers bro…

That's what I think too. Thanks :)

Not only know the material but knowing how the “theory” applies to the melody and the changes. I have been trying to nail the essential flavor as it pertains to the chords within the context of any song. It takes time and practice.
