Man, so good. I've been playing for 25 years but only making a really intense effort at electric guitar, and specifically jazz and blues improv, for about the last 3 months. Thinking about going for moods or adjectives like *staggered* is an eye-opener. I'm also really thankful for the way you describe your self-talk briefly here and more in other videos. My teacher recommended Effortless Mastery to me and reading him and watching you at the same time has helped me embrace the process and not lapse into negativity and fear-based playing.

Ah - good. You may want to read Rick Rubin's book, 'The Creative Act: A Way of Being' as well. Lots of ideas about framing the work that we do, keeping it fresh, keeping it moving.

Hi Adam - Thanks for this short and thoughtful reading from your book on a topic I find fascinating. For me it helps to remember that music is a language. I think for me during a good improvisation, my thoughts, or "inner dialog", shifts from my spoken language to the "language of music", and so most of the thinking is in "music" rather than (for me) English. Music (as a language) is a lot less precise, but much more expressive that spoken language. I think for people who are "just listening", this sort of shift can happen too, and would be described as "zoning out" while listening. As a performer/improviser, there is also a sort of split inside that happens, where one part of me is listening (almost the same as someone in the audience might) and another is getting the fingers in the right places at the right time. And prob another part judging how things are going. Sometimes, as the improv goes on, I'll hear something (played by me or someone else) and might have a word pop up like "triplets" or "dorian" - as I process what I heard. One question about the book, any local sellers of String Theories in NYC? fwiw - An audiobook of you reading the whole book would be awesome!

Thanks for sharing! Yes, of course - listeners zone in/out, just as we do. I never thought of it quite like that. No, there are no local sellers carrying 'String Theories' in New York. Maybe I should ask TR Crandall? Do you have an idea?
