I believe the problem with the current comic book industry, particularly the big two publishers, is multiplefold. First, is the corporate acquisitions that are now allowing Marvel and DC disregard results and rely on other divisions of Disney and WB to cover their losses. Second, is the switch from market of customers (the ordinary reader) to market of investors (BlackRock, Vanguard), that promotes DEI and ESG culture instead of the all fashione, tested and proven, "customer is always right" culture, which at the same time reinforces the first one. And third, enabled but the previous two, is the bunch of psychopaths and underachievers being hired, who have no love for the genre, no idea how to write or draw comics, don't even have work ethics, but whose commitment with "the Message" ensures them a position. I said this before, Wes: I believe the industry as we knew it is beyond saving, and that the future lies on small independent publishers and crowdfunding, at least while the current situation continues.

To use an old phrase, they've poisoned the well. Even if a decent book squeaks through, an unexpected gem, you know the DCU, as a whole, has been brought to the ground, and it isn't worth investing in. Reading Absolute Power pretty much confirmed it. I liked the art, but the characters, as they've been handled over the years, are not very likeable. In the past, when they got a team together, even with all the different units, JLA, JSA, Titans, etc, there wasn't this level bickering, and there was no feeling of excitement, seeing all these legends working together. They've managed to make the Trinity just basic heroes. How does one do that? I love DC. Truly. But without back issues, they'd offer nothing to read.

I can sum up up comics in general right now. They are going the way of blockbuster and pay phones. 1. They need to introduce people to variety of characters in movies and shows both animation and live action to get younger readers. Look how Blade, she hulk, moon knight, Daredevil get temporary increases when projects are announced or released. 2. Need to simplify stories and stop time travel, multiverse and cosmic level stories and get back to simple grounded problems 3. Characters need limits. Need a reason to see a cover and be concerned for the hero / villain fight. 4. Establish a stable Justice League team and stick with it. Seems like JL is changing roster every week. Superman, Batman, Flash, WW, John Stewart, Hawkgirl, Manhunter, Vixen, Canary, Green Arrow.

While that makes Lee a good dad, you would think, as the President, Publisher, and Chief Creative Officer, he would be working long hours at DC HQ to buoy up the sinking ship. My situation has that I basically can't buy new comics. I have a few comic book shops close by but they only have about 10% of the store dedicated to new comics. And I can pretty much guarantee that I won't find anything like the latest "Batman" or "X Men" in that section. Forget about Wonder Woman or Daredevil or any of the lesser titles.. And if I do happen to find a Superman or Spiderman book, it's not really "Superman" but "Absolute Superman" or "Superman in Space" or "Spiderman Ultimate" or "Spiderman And The Wonder Twins" or something. And it's not much better online since DC and Marvel let their comics sit a few months before they are available on their respective apps. I can get a fairly recent book on Amazon but that leads to the same problem with all the different versions of the main characters. Maybe everyone shows up on Wednesday and buys their books and then nothing's left when I wander over on the weekend, but I'm not flocking to the store on a single day to stand in line for the last grubby copy of Spiderman. I don't know how ANYONE is buying comic books.

Latest issue of Batman was an event tie in and, as per usual with tie ins, it fucking sucked! We've been trained as customers to have low expectations. It stings more to spend a fiver on a dud comic than it does to watch a bad episode of a TV show. You're still paying for that bad TV episode (subscription costs etc) but it's a microtransaction. A dud comic makes me feel like I should grow up and drop this hobby. TV and videogames have a commitment to quality that comics don't have. They take their customers for granted. It'll only hurt them in the end.

DC did very poorly from the late 60s to early 90s. Batman as a comic was never that popular and would have been cancelled without Adam West's tv show. It was only until Batman 1989 came out did Batman start selling well. Then over the years the amount of adaptions like The Animated Series to the Nolan Films made Batman become a big seller. X-Men doing better than Batman isn't that surprising since X-Men was the best selling comic for 2 decades straight and most of the 90s. The only DC comic to be a top seller while Marvel dominated was John Byrne's Superman series. However DC screwed up Superman so badly his comics no longer top sales charts as he should be due to how iconic he is.

They want to build this crossover into this new initiative so they revealed everything important is in the finale so they are just waiting til the end and possibly reading the tpb. The DC offices have a sword over their heads. No one knows when they are being sold again. When's the next cut coming? Now there's this event and it's not generating the buzz it should...especially since they know it's going to link back at somepoint and be irrelevant. DC is trying to be trendy, but they don't know how to be so they are trying to go back to basics but none of them know how to. 90% failure across the board. But that nothing there is over 200k, it's really 100% failure.

Badly cast movies have helped kill the comic industry. Constantly blackwashing and reimagining classic characters, lore and concepts. There is no sense of continuity or respect for the source material.

Wes... not surprised at the news, as those 140 stores may represent a significant portion of remaining stores that we may not want to admit. 😢

I noticed. Comics are in HUGE trouble.

These numbers are further skewed by the fact that collectors like myself are purchasing 4-6 copies per month of Flash & Titans to have all the variants in our collections. Whatever the sales are, actual readers are at least half of those numbers.

I think there’s a lot more good titles than most people on KZbin actually like there are. I really just don’t see how smaller characters sell without a huge creative team with how expensive comics are, I love all of the books I get every month, but I’m going to have to cut back a lot because I can’t afford $40 a week on comics. First books to go will normally be the books that aren’t the big important characters. I also think a lot more people have gone digital than anyone really knows.

I'm sure I've mentioned this here before but I cancelled my DC pulls a few months back. The update is I sold off the last 13 years (new 52 forward) out of my collection at our garage sale last week. The only books I get right now are the Energon universe and Hellboy and I didn't get anything for Hellboy the last time. Don't know what that's about. As for the vertigo, I guess there's another kind of stroke that doesn't present itself like a normal stroke, so you might want to get checked out and make sure it's not something like that.

It’s too bad because I like Shazam I guess I’ll have to stop buying it. DC might be ready to go out of publishing Btw this is a good video I hope you feel better

Throughout the years I lived in California during the DC Tuesdays era, all the comic stores in the area refused to sell DCs on Tuesdays, and every time they would mess up my order or under ordered some book, there was no way of fixing it. Because not only were they running 3 hours behind the east coast, now they were also a day behind. So by the time I got to the store in the evening, the excess stock at the distributors was already gone. I do sympathize with the stores as they had a system, with hired part timers for extra help on Wednesdays, and an extra day would cost them more so they chose not to do it. I get it, but it kinda just shows how hard it is in the industry to change things around and try something new..

I'm in Cali also, but where I'm at, we have stores that went to selling everything on Tuesdays when that happened, works for us, no complaints.

Dc rebirth was the last good thing dc did. And they absolutely screwed it all up

The difference is there’s an entire generation of fans that grew up with the MCU so they only care about marvel. It’s sad. I only collect dc for the most part. My entire pull is dc outside of power rangers and TMNT.

Given the dire state of Warner Discovery, which is closing down or selling off divisions and is talking about licensing out their games following the poor performance of Suicide Squad I think DC could be in real trouble. I think there's more than a chance of someone from Discovery just coming in and cutting all the titles down to maybe Batman, Superman and one or two others. Or just outright shutting DC down effectively and licensing out the titles completely (just like they're talking about with their gaming division). If DC wants to avoid it (I don't know anymore if people like Jim Lee do) they need to stop copying Marvel (particularly on things that are obviously already failing for Marvel when DC decides to do them) get talent who love the characters (and understand them), and focus on those key characters. As with Rebirth get Superman right, then expand from there (and don't destroy the good thing DC when you have it again). Crazy times when the possibility of DC actually collapsing and ending in the next few years doesn't seem that unlikely.

I'm glad Venom War is #4 on that chart and didn't sell as well. Al Ewing doesn't deserve to be an any title imo, he sucks. Idk why Dan Jurgens isn't writing more at DC. He's a great writer! People really liked his Batman the First Knight mini-series.

Huge Superman fan here. I loved Rebirth but haven’t been back since Bendis. What is unthinkable to me is how Steve Rude, a veteran professional and phenomenal artist, was not allowed to be a regular artist in the book because he informed editorial tat he would be drawing in the style of Joe Shuster, which would have looked amazing. He didn’t want to conform, so he decided to go elsewhere. New 52 had already chased me away from most of the books and I’m sure there have been many missteps since. But you have to also say that, if nothing else, whoever is picking the talent over there is really doing a lousy job.

Not a DC fan but want to help getting the enhancement up..these companies need to publish less books for awhile and get some top talent to revive the charecters ..both marvel and DC have been hiring these writers gor weird fan fiction

Both companies should cancel 60% of their titles and try to focus on quality. I had vertigo (not the comics) for a week a few years ago. Wasn't nice but it went on its own. Take care.
