I watch a channel like DeWayne at Dry Creek Wrangler school, he doesn’t have a fancy setup, he doesn’t try to hook within the first 30 seconds to keep you watching. His content is his wisdom and that’s what really gets viewers and subs. Authenticity is king!
@Petunia-Greene8 күн бұрын
I wonder about the whole “hook” thing. A good idea, yes but it’s starting to feel so canned that when you are a small channel it could potentially be a turn off. I don’t want to be the more commercialized channels that do the 15-30 sec hook. It just feels so forced.

I like channels such as Kross Kountry Kaspar- her life trying to get set up to live off grid someday, working at various things to raise the money, rescuing dogs and finding homes for puppies. That is authentic to me. I have a similar goal.

A bigger content creator I watch has distanced herself emotionally from the audience, not sharing as much personal information. Rather, she makes videos about subjects that can help the viewer. I used to be so excited to watch her videos every week. Now I don’t know if I care. So this shows me how important that emotional connection piece really is!
@Ty_Myers9 күн бұрын
That's too bad, my take is it's important to do both (i.e., make highly value-driven videos + make more relatable/personal videos). This way people became a fan of your value and your personality.

I have a Travel Channel in addition to this account, and even though I'm not very big, my fans really enjoy experiencing a journey they may or may not ever be able to have for themselves, however that journey goes. And honestly if you think about it it's very valuable to show where things go wrong or were you struggle on a trip, because that's most likely going to happen to your viewers at some point as well, so seeing how you get past that is really important!😊
Sean, these insights are very helpful! Over the summer, I got fired for making KZbin videos at work so now I'm going all in. People connect with your struggle before your successes 14:10 - Share your scars not your open wounds (aka current struggles) 15:20 - 97% care more about emotional connection over video quality 16:50 - 5 Questions to ask before recording: What's the takeaway beyond the information 19:20 - Epiphany bridge 21:40 - You don't need the perfect background

I've followed your channel for years, and the content has always been helpful. I discovered your channel through your technical reviews of photography lenses, which I highly recommend watching. Today, you highlighted a key point about vulnerability in storytelling. I've seen people sharing raw emotions on social media without structure or purpose. When you discussed your scar and how to find reasonable solutions to difficulties, it was very helpful. Being completely vulnerable about painful issues that are still healing can be pointless and dangerous without proper context. Thank you for sharing.🙌🏽🙏🏽⚡

This is great info. I think you've touched on a lot of these ideas in other episodes and I've already been implementing some of them. As a creator, sharing your mistakes is somewhat contrary to what you might think is good content, and by that I mean, sometimes my confidence is low when creating a video because I don't feel like I'm "expert enough" on the topic and I'm planning on talking about where I've failed. But then I can compare my video to some other channels in my niche where I really think they are experts, and sometimes my videos do better than theirs, even though I'm saying things like, "I failed at this last year, I'm trying again and this is what I'm trying this time..." . It's pretty interesting! My subscribers are SO happy for me when I share a new success though. It is fun!

Thanks for the info and as a new content creator I very much agree with you on everything you said. I’ve wanted to start for a very long time and I finally did. It’s not perfect and I have a lot to learn with just using OBS and trying to figure out how to keep my audio while blocking out my discord friends chatting in the background 😂 took me about 36 hours to learn just that as I’m probably consider a caveman when it comes to computer knowledge or apps in general being 38 and coming from a time before the internet and finding friends was as simple as skateboarding/biking around the neighborhoods to see where everyone was. I was rejecting all of this for a very long time and have accepted this is what I actually want to do. Instead of limiting myself to what I’m passionate about due to a lack of knowledge or experience it’s best to just dive in and make all the mistakes and embrace them. Best of luck to you and yours!

I've been training/walking dogs for 15 years. Started a dog channel 15 years ago but never posted much. Only recently have I taken it all seriously in terms of editing and publishing. Got a new computer, sick GPU, never even had that. I filmed over years, have a hard drive of footage too large to want to deal with on HD drives, and still have no one to film video during house calls to this day. I also have no clue about the legalities of it all. I have some crazy dog stories and if I had a video guy back then, we'd already have a series on YT. I found myself giving the same speeches for sessions, and talk for hours, for whatever problems, priming the client to understand it from my perspective. You could say I'm primed for KZbin, but just haven't dug in yet. Vids like this are my motivation to dig in more. Going back through footage since 2010 is overwhelming, however. I've got entire lives of dogs on hard drives and I need to get into the life of each one in separate videos. I'm an example of what not to do if you want to be successful on YT, but maybe I can change it for the future while I'm still kind of young. lol

I can totally relate! I was always recording myself doing (saying) stupid stuff on cassette tapes and making cheesy home movies on those huge camcorders back in the early 90's. I always loved that kind of stuff. I traveled all over the world for almost 20 years straight doing things most people only dream of and think about the mountains of unlimited possibilities I had from a content/media perspective but never capitalized on. I was always afraid to put myself out there, until I got really sick and realized life is too short to dream and not do. There's never going to be a perfect time, and in the end nothing really matters, especially not what people think of you, so you might as well take a chance and see what happens. As long as you do it, you'll never be left wondering what could have been, and even if you hate it, you'll learn something along the way. Wishing you all the best and if you do decide to start a channel let me know because I'd love to watch. I'll be your first subscriber!

@ Awesome feedback. I was always afraid to put myself out there too, and always had crappy cell phone cameras. I'm really an audio guy, so I've been recording music for decades, and never thought I'd need a video project computer. Now that I have one, there are unlimited options for things to learn, which is sick. Now I have to dive into editing more, even get some basic graphics going to get my ideas out. All I do is think about ideas but from what I've seen, you have to be careful of all kinds of stuff that will get your vids copyright struck. I'm still learning and watching vids like these regularly to learn more and more. Feel like I'm a freshman in the college of video. It's all good, I figured I'd give myself a year or two to get my feet wet, then step up editing and storytelling when I have a decent grip on Davinci Resolve. That's where I'm at now. If you do the same, let me know. I'll sub to you as well!

@ He's why I became a dog trainer. For whatever reason, I understood most of what he was doing immediately, probably from being obsessed with wolves in the wild. @@asanseil5553 Learning is very important and it'll give you an edge up on things once you get started! If I had one piece of advice to give, it would be to do just like Shawn says in most of his videos, "ya' gotta start before you're ready." It's true! I only mention this because I got stuck in analysis paralysis and would always tell myself "I just need to watch one more video on this topic" or "I just need to get that tripod, and that microphone, oh and that camera, wait I need a computer" haha! I was the worst! That day I started I made the most ridiculous thumbnail of myself to really push myself outside of my comfort zone and realize that no one really cares! The best teacher is through doing the thing, nothing will ever replace how much you'll learn and how much you'll progress by doing it and all the things you want to step up will occur naturally over time. When you look back a few months from that moment you started, you'll be that much further ahead! Good luck to you, I'm out here rooting for you! Btw I appreciate that! I started my channel around March of last year and I talk about dogs a lot so it's probably right up your ally. You should be able to click my name to view it. Good luck, you're going to crush it!

What microphone are you holding in your hand Sean? In the description it shows the SM7B, but I’m wondering about the mic in your hand😁

I was wondering why some channels narrated content seem to be doing well and I didn't understand but now I totally see how if you narrate and kind of put the video in the context of a story it's better than just showing like some homemade videos of the situation. I guess they knew about this a long time ago but I'm just now getting it
