Per countless requests, here I am demonstrating how I thin the infamous Denka by Teruyasu Fujiwara. These are blue super steel core at HRC 67 with a soft stainless cladding. Fujiwara is a legend in the knife world and it is an honor to be trusted by customers around the country to work on his knives.
Please note that I do this work per customer request to increase performance to their satisfaction. It is not a criticism of Fujiwara or his teams work.
Please do not go buy a grinder and thin your super expensive knives because you watched this video. I promise you that you will mess it up.
The video is unedited so you can see the whole process and see how I often can’t find the right abrasive or anything else’s that gets lost in my shop.
HIT THE LIKE BUTTON AND SUBSCRIBE AND SHARE THIS VID WITH FELLOW KNIFE NERDS.
Thanks for watching!

Your work on my Denka turned a great knife into an outstanding knife. Excellent work! I have a TF Mabs that needs your spa treatment!

Very cool process. I just thinned my first knife on a belt last week. I can't imagine the skill needed to thin a knife like that to get such a good result. 👍🏻

Hell yeah, brother! Great work as usual, awesome to watch an entire thinning process. And l can say, a good 4k edge stropped with 1 micron Gunny is going to be just about the ultimate edge for general use.

Fujiwara knives.... so expensive, but they sure can look rough! Scratches and even looking unfinished at times. Holy smokes - that looked amazing!

when i bought my mab i had the shop send me pics of everything in stock and between 5 knives they all looked pretty much completely different lol. they were all different shapes and sizes, the hammer finish was completely different on every knife, grind and thickness all completely different, a couple had just horrendous fit and finish. happy i ended up with a pretty decent one, but wow its a straight up lottery to buy on sight unseen, you really have no idea what you will get lol.

@@AC-wl7ve Wow, I never would have thought to do that but it's a great idea. I typically buy from the smaller shops here in the US anyway, and I'm sure they would be able to send pics of the options. And when in Japan, I'm sure most there would be able to accommodate as well.

Thanks for the videos. Single bevel knives. I'm a farmers market sharpener and it's rare that I get a single bevel knife. I look at what I can to see to judge the quality. Engraving quality and the collar on the handle. If I believe it's a very high quality I offer the shop in my area that is closer to your ability. Generally they pick my faster service with a micro bevel for longevity. Can you explain other clues to quality, And your sharpening technique and offering a micro bevel. Thx

Originally these are ground convex. Do keep the convexity with your radius platen or they go flat/concave? I've had mine thinned here in the UK on a horizontal wheel and performance went up but it's extremely sticky now.

Oh, one other question: How loud is your belt sander there? I'm in a small townhouse, and as I contemplate grinding options, quiet-for-neighbors is paramount. Thanks again!

Where does one get that curved platen, or, if you made it, what did you make it out of to keep friction heat down? Thanks.
