Pinova is a wonderful, very late variety that crops fairly regularly, but it tends to overcrop, so thinning is very important, particularly if there is a lot of fruit underneath the main fruiting platform. If you see a lot of apples touching each other, you know that some of them have to be cut out. Try to cut out the smaller fruits. Groups of two are fine. It may seem a pity to lose some of the fruit, but the fruit that you leave will be better in terms of flavour and size, and next year’s crop will be better too. You can only get good quality fruit if the tree is healthy, so keep an eye on the colour of the leaves. Narration by Dan Neuteboom, camera by John Paddy. Read more at realenglishfruit.co.uk
