This is a very simple and easy to understand video, short and clear explanation. I did also learn in another video that the symbol is often omitted on drawings from the USA where it is third angle by default. First angle is Europe and Asia.

Thanks! No worries there, I have a fair few ideas noted down, thinking them through and going to be putting several out over the next few weeks! Coming back to drafting in the next video as well, will be looking at section views, one video on the basics, and a more in-depth advanced one to follow that.

Can you tell me why first angle projection is called first angle? And why we are interested in First and third?
@Maker-Clan
@Maker-Clan 8 жыл бұрын
+koushik sriram Good question, but it gets quite complicated. The first and third angle names come from the quadrants they are derived from using traditional Cartesian axis. First angle is said to be solved if the 3d object is within the first quadrant (+X,+Y) and third is if the object is within the third (-X,-Y). I don't personally see much value in working with the quadrants for solving third and first angle as I don't find it adds anything when creating or working with drawings. Teaching these on a regular basis I created these videos specifically to dump and leave behind the quadrant side of the two methods as I said before I don't feel they add any value, just confusion and they take something realistic and make it unnecessarily abstract.

+Clan MacCAD are we projecting 3D objects in xy, yz n zx plane? if it is so then we are only having three planes so we will only get three projections. but if we are projecting with planes which are parallel also, then concept of octants doesn't make sense. And sry for bugging you with silly questions i just wanna know why things are the way they are.
@Maker-Clan
@Maker-Clan 8 жыл бұрын
+koushik sriram Essentially yes, if you go with octants then first is front top right, and third is lower left back. You can have as many views as you like if you box it in and keep the 'front' view or XY the same/centre when opening that box of planes back out into a drawing. There are probably better suited demos that focus on the Cartesian side of this than mine, and text makes it difficult to convey. No worries. It's perfectly valid to the math behind how the view relationships were established to abide euclidean logic. It just to me falls into unnecessary when working with a thing you need to draw, and a paper/screen/pdf you wish to have a drawing on. That relationship I find works just wholeheartedly better and more straightforward as an 'object to paper' relationship directly, as the video shows.

Why first angle and third angle projection method is used in machine design and why second and fourth angle method is not used?
@Maker-Clan
@Maker-Clan 8 жыл бұрын
Unless your going on to use the views for math afterwards, considering the quadrants from a Cartesian system is overly abstracting. If your just making engineering drawings, a parallel relationship from object to plane and simple layout rules as shown above are more than enough. There is a long running discussion on a mechanical engineering site which covers this in more detail if you google your own questions where several people have contributed over a number of years. However I made these videos for the very reason that traditional explanation of this topic delves far too much into abstraction of an otherwise very basic requirement.

+Mario Ortiz Glad your looking for more. I think in terms of how the two methods work now I've done the symbols as well, I've covered everything I can think of relating to how views are arranged. However I do have plans for more engineering drawing standards and requirement videos discussing the other rules to follow beyond that. Any specific ideas on what you would like covered, do let me know though!

Why do you start with the front on top and the bottom in front? That doesnt seem logical. Shouldnt you start with the projecting the top in the center
@Maker-Clan
@Maker-Clan 7 жыл бұрын
In engineering drawings you will typically have the Elevation view (subjective front of object) as the 'master' view, with the others projected outwards from that. At the basic level a simple object would have around 3 views. Typically named the elevation, plan and end elevation. Translated this would be the (again subjective) front, top and left or right side of the object in question. So the video shows more views than typically needed, but shows how the method continues to apply beyond the norm. I get where the idea that we are looking top down at the paper so shouldn't the top view be first natural instinct comes from, but I think it is grounded that usually we recognise things better from what we would describe as the 'front'. Whether that be buildings, products we buy or an engine etc. So therefore having the 'main' view be the most recognisable and branch outward from there would be sensible when drawings are essentially communications above all else. However at this point I have to admit that is speculation.

Easier way. Use a bowl. First angle: Turn bowl upside down, put item on top of bowl, slide item along bowl surface Third angle: Set bowl normal side up, put item inside bowl, slide item along bowl surface
@Maker-Clan
@Maker-Clan 3 жыл бұрын
If it works for you great, I personally can't see how it makes it easier. The relationship is object & drawing. Adding a bowl back into the mix which has nothing to do with the source or result is just another abstraction like the folding viewer position planes of old used to explain this. Which is what these videos try to move away from. Again if it works for you that's awesome!
