Third Commandment | Don’t take the Lord’s name in vain | Commandments in the 21st Century |
Today we are taking a closer look at the 3nd commandment, found in Exodus 20:7, “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.”
“This commandment not only prohibits false oaths and common swearing, but it forbids us to use the name of God in a light or careless manner, without regard to its awful significance. By the thoughtless mention of God in common conversation, by appeals to Him in trivial matters, and by the frequent and thoughtless repetition of His name, we dishonor Him.”
Clean speech and reverent attitudes take cultivation, but the effort pays off. It’s nice to note that it’s not only advantageous to one’s spiritual life to guard his or her words, but it’s also a benefit in the professional world. People will respect you more when they see that you control your reactions and show a respectful, calm attitude under all circumstances.
Rebuke for taking the name of the Lord in vain:
• We should only bless the name of the Lord: James 3:10
• The Name of the of the Lord is to be reverted: Psalms 111:9
• Special regard to the name of the Lord, it brings a blessing: Acts 2:21
• The name of the Lord is to be worshipped: Habakkuk 2:20
• We are responsible for using the name of the Lord idly: Matthew 12:26
• We defile ourselves when using the name of the Lord in vain: Matthew 15:11
• Using the name of the Lord in vain shows our manners: 1 Corinthians 15:33
Principles to live by:
• Bless them which curse you: Romans 12:14
• Do not revile (retaliation): 1 Peter 2:23
• Keep a clean and pure heart: Luke 6:45
• Ask the Lord to change your character: Colossians 3:8
• Become a new creature in Christ: 1 Corinthians 5:17
