When listening to Tool I find it almost necessary to have access to written and sometimes translated lyric sheets. Besides Maynard's lyrics often being psychologically deep seeing the words gives you a chance to comprehend weather he is being deceptively sinister or handing you a recipe for chocolate cake with no eggs.I love these guys

Him saying "Prying open my third eye" always made me feel like his journey was violent and artificial, not a natural development but a forced one
@benjaminostertag4414
@benjaminostertag4414 4 жыл бұрын
To me, it seems as if his third eye only opens when that state is brought on by a tool (psychedelics), and the idea of prying it open is a comparably less natural attempt of doing it only from one self (in a sober mind with no help). What if you permanently had access to that state and could be completely coherent? Maybe Buddhists should consider that person “enlightened”. 🤷🏼‍♂️

"Think for yourself, question authority. Throughout human history, as our species has faced the frightening, terrorizing fact that we do not know who we are, or where we are going in this ocean of chaos. it has been the authorities, the political, the religious, the educational authorities who attempted to comfort us by giving us order, rules, regulations, informing, forming in our minds their view of reality. To think for yourself you must question authority and learn how to put yourself in a state of vulnerable, open-mindedness; chaotic, confused, vulnerability to inform yourself." Timothy Leary.

About ten years ago I smoked a big bowl and then found a 46&2 lyrics video. I had no idea about the shadow or anything else. I was in my 30's and went to read in Wikipedia. Now my life is very different. I have a happy family and own several businesses. Learning about the shadow and then other things was a personal revolution. I can honestly say Tool completely changed my life and the lives of my family. If there were some way I could repay them I would. I wish I could give them my sincere gratitude. It's worth pointing out that (as you noted) the song has two voices in it. In the official lyrics, one voice (the inner id to which the outer ego speaks) is always in quotation marks. In the earlier live performances, Maynard would use two microphones for this song - one in each hand, one for each voice.

I have always absolutely loved the line 'Prying open my Third Eye'. It sums up everything great about Tool as a whole. This idea of opening your Third Eye.. your higher self and connection to the spiritual world. But instead of meditation or some sort of passive method it's a brutal, almost violent act. Forcing your way into the world of spirit. Cutting into the flesh to reveal the spirit underneath. Prying open the Third Eye and not accepting anything but unfettered and absolute success in reaching the next level. I fucking love Tool!!!

H is their greatest song in my opinion, and if you want to really understand Maynards spiritual journey, you have to look at each album as a whole. Each one is a step in that journey. As he evolves, and moves toward enlightenment, it is reflected in his lyrics, and the style in which he sings.

Thank you for helping me see a new meaning in Third Eye. Helped me see a new perspective. This is why I love Tool. The lyrics are left for interpretation. And sure, I'm bet he has something he wants to say and hopes we get at least the gist of it. I definitely would say your explanation is way more based on facts and aligns with their music found on other albums, as you said yourself. This is the beauty of it all. To understand and therefore have it mean something to you. Hopefully taking something positive away. Without Tool, I don't know if I'd still be here.

Impressed to see Pneuma brought up. A number of Tool fans seemed to have missed a bit of Fear Inoculum. Yet, when people place a legendary stature on former work, newer work instantaneously pales in comparison. That bit just mentioned comes from them looking for more of the outright same, but will cast an accusation of being pigeonholed if the same is brought towards them. Now, that aside, I do, again, thank you for the inclusion of a Fear Inoculum piece. Respect to you, Max.

great work, you really connect the dots. tools songs are amazing pieces of music and Maynard makes the songs come alive with his amazing insight into the metaphysical realms of reality and physic. so deep down the rabbit hole we go. ive had my third eye squeegeed clean and opened, and wow, its so amazing to lift the blinders and see the truth. i fel in love with tool for thier music, way back in 92. not knowing they were going to take me on a spiritual inner journey of my self. you nailed the connection of these songs. this is why Maynard and the guys didnt want their music on these digital platforms because the albums are like novels and need to be read from cover to cover in whole, not in pieces jumping around track to track haphazardly,. but they gave in to the tics and leaches and gave them what they wanted. lol i still get chills when i listen to Lateralus and Reflections. that was my awakening after a 175 mg journey with DMT . "With my feet upon the ground I lose myself between the sounds And open wide to suck it in. I feel it move across my skin". that is how a DMT experience begins. and then you go through the spiral. amazing. simply amazing. this was always my favorite tool song decades before ever experiencing DMT or even knowing what it was, the moment i came back from my very first experience, i immediately connected the dots and was amazed at how perfectly Maynard not only describes the actual experience, but describes the emotions and physical aspects as well. HE KNOWS!!!!! lol

First time I ever listened to Third Eye, my interpretation of the lyrics were a description of a very conflicting inner turmoil of the self. At the end during the lyrics "I opened my eye and there we were" I perceived that to be the self experiencing enlightenment and it was an outer body experience for me. Hands down my favorite Tool song (which is saying A LOT). MJK is in my opinion, the greatest lyricist of our generation.

"Black and white is all I see in my infancy, red and yellow reaching out to me, let's me see." Lareralus. Those are colors I saw upon the beginnings of my own third eye meditations. "Bright and blue and shimmering" reminds me of the shining blue colors I also saw in my meditations.

One or my favorites is "Descending" which, I believe, is about the last golden age and the change that is about to happen to our civilization. Devastating, but also awakening. The pyramids in the background in the live show when they first revealed the song...well, I could go on for a long time. Some of Maynard interviews with Joe Rogan also hint towards the cycle of the precession of the equinoxes (though he does not use that term like Graham Hancock does).

You did it again, Max! Tool's songs have always been very esoteric and cryptic to me (that was before I read Jung) and now, with your explanations and my readings on Jung's theories of the unconscious, I understand them much better. Keep doing what you are doing, I love it so much!

My personal take on the verses in third eye is that it's about the rapprochement of the adult self with the inner child. Recognizing that ourselves at our most naive and vulnerable stage of childhood is actually the most pure understanding of who we are and why we're here. "Came out to watch you play; why are you running away?" just encapsulates the struggle we all find ourselves in. To some degree, we've all sacrificed our inner child to the millstones of society, we want to connect with who we were, but find it impossible. Our inner child resists the form we have taken through necessity, and by seeking it out we drive ourselves away from it. Prying open the third eye is all about understanding that the child had it right all along, and all of this has been a necessary exercise of futility. "So glad it's over, I missed you so much"

Jambi is the motherload tune of symbolism and the general Tool M.O- it also kicks ass which gets lost in all of this.. The reason people care and these tunes work is because they're so cool and people can latch on to that with ease.

I'm just getting into Spirituality and have been listening to Tool for years now, never connected the dots either until the other day and loved this video! Tripped acid once and listened to 10,000 days. Lipan conjuring is another to look into and also the time length of the track. There are signs there. Lipan Conjuring on track is 1:11. Reflection is 11:10. Look up the meaning of 111 and the definition of pneuma. Just some more interesting facts. Makes me love Tool even more now.

This is a fantastic analysis. An important component to acknowledge and add to your interpretation is that Maynard is also, not so subtly, referencing the cyclic cataclysmic reset of our civilization. You can catch the clue provided @10:57 "And blue as our new second sun." This is the case with nearly all Tool songs, most Pink Floyd songs, the recent Breaking Benjamin album 'Aurora', Lady Gaga songs, Noah Cyrus songs like 'The End of Everything,' recent Jonathan Davis (of korn) songs, etc. Combine your obvious knowledge of the metaphysical with some solar and plasma physics, cosmology and eschatology and you will realize Maynard is a damn genius.

🤘 (the Sanskrit pronos need work tho'). Mantra/music/frequency/yoga/pranayam can open the ajna chakra too (for more control over outcomes), instead of faster results with psychedelics and have the eye close on comedown. or risk schizoaffective issues through prolonged use of LSD, DMT or other reliable psychedelics. Seeing vs hallucinating, is mostly self or screwy connections. Misery loves company. Had some clairvoyance, clairaudience (different than Culling Voices : Tool's FI - that's not clairaudience but great to have from the start), alt realities, astral interaction. The next fun part was opening and energizing the crown/ swadhishthana chakra (skulltop and above - ref: Aenima CD inlay: Hicks + Keenan illustration). The rough part was an unrelated melding of conscious and subconscious mind, but that was unsolicited, and not from a benign source.. Good to know if it doesn't kill you, it can do a lot worse, like little sleep for months until fixed, with increasing anxiety and cardiac risk. So shielding helps. The transformation wasn't easy, but the awareness is the single most useful thing for me. Grateful. Abrahamic faiths pose bottlenecks. Some will scream "demonic" or hellbound, and that fucked initially with conviction/subconscious. Irrational fear, organized religion, ego, ignorance and self doubt are worse than any demons. Thanks a lot for sharing this. 56

At 7:26 you say that she refers to the moon, I believe the “she” is actually the sun. The lyrics before state that the moon tells a secret, which is that “as bright as I am, this light is not my own and a million light reflections pass over me. Obviously moon light is just sunlight ‘reflecting’ and the sun is the bright and endless, in which we orbit, as opposed to drifting in space. Resuscitating the hopeless could mean the energy it gives to plants plus vitamins for us.

I dont know why " reflection " isnt considered one of the best ..lyrically...I've never seen your videos ...so I don't know if you are perceptive as far as figuring out what the meaning is in a tool song...but i woukd love to see if you pick up on the main point he is talking about in REFLECTION because it is definently 3 verses that have to be combined after being separated ...and you just talked about it but you did not see it...you got half of it.....but no you missed it....let me explain ....reflections is a step process ..you have to realize there are multiple meanings of reflection , the 1st verse is literally self reflection...and in the self reflection he looks deep inside his self indulgent pitiful hole , and even tho it was so dark and not thriving because of self indulgence lack of living for something bigger , and he is defeated but so conceded he thinks he might find peace and comfort in the emptiness ..and knows its pitiful but something is calling me......ok so he is defeated in his self reflection and the emptiness discovers and in his darkest moment fetal weeping ...his confidant , the moon tells him " your" secret ...speaking to someone specifically...and thus is the big thing you are missing...u dont take the story his moon tells him into account...so the moon says " as full and bright as I am...this light is not my own as a million light reflection pass over me " ( or close to that) " thecsource is btright and endless , she resuscitated the hopeless without her we are lifeless satellites drifting ".....ok so who is the moon calling she ? Not itself, not Maynard...without her we are lifeless satellites drifting ...? Yes, the sun ...where does the moon get its light " supposedly" from the sun..its reflecting the suns light and it shines full and bright...the sun's gift is accepted as a source of power for the moon to be it's full potential and makes it shine and be beautiful. ..reflection...the moon is telling him you should take the gift of the source of light to be yiur fulk self..fulfilled... bright ! Its literally the one consciousness but to get it he is pulling his head out if the inner self reflection ge was in , doing it without one doubt that he doesn't want to look inside while serving his narcissism, he must crucify ego before it's far too late , he prays the kightvkifts hin out before he literally withers away and dies from the need of that connection with the light. .which is definition of pine....and thec3rd verse he repeats the necessity to crucify ego and yiur idea of self importance if you want to leave this place of negativity, blind and a cynical....ANDCYOU WILL COME TO FIND , WE ARE ALL ONE MIND CAPABLE OF ALL THATS IMAGINED AND INCONCEIVABLE . So to let the light touch you you let the words spill through and pass right through to bring out hope and reason....its literally using an anology of the moon reflecting the sins light to be beautiful to tell is destroyed from what he finds or doesnt find when he in a self reflection because he is feeling like something is calling him to seek more...the moon saves him with that secret of humbling yourself , seeingvthe connection to each other and to the light source for meaning and purpose , happiness

Yes yes yes. One of my favorite songs by them ever. The moon doesn’t offer the light!1!1. The moon is telling Maynard, my Confidant, the confidant is Maynard. “This light is not my own!!” We are all like the moon, lifeless satellites. A million light reflections pass by the moon. (Paraphrasing). The actual source for the moon light is bright and endless.

@@VoxParanoia I believe becoming a loser is independent to smoking weed. But addiction to anything can always be taken to far and help you on your way. I didn't stop to suddenly "change my ways" (although it felt that hard when I did), but by doing so it certainly helped me with a few other things in my life. I've seen both sides of the spectrum, some who consume all for weed, and some that you would never guess. I don't think it should be illegal, but it should be understood and moderated (like other pain killers). So yes, back to my first point. There will always be losers, and some will use weed as the excuse of why they are a loser. Doesn't make weed bad, makes them bad.

All mighty David Hey, just saw your reply. I am no expert on this subject, but I will do my best to answer your question. Like you said, a lot of Tool songs, particularly Third Eye, mention ancient wisdom and symbolism. I believe the reason people are mentioning Jordan Peterson and Carl Jung (a psychiatrist from the late 1800/early 1900) is because the creator of this video also did a series about one of Jung’s books “Aion”, which Jordan Peterson talked about, it relates to psychology and symbology, here’s a link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nIacmYJri7KGfLs Both Carl Jung and Jordan Peterson discuss the meaning behind different types of symbols throughout history within the context of psychology, which also relates to some of Tool’s lyrics. There is a lot of information about this, so I can’t explain here, but if you look into Carl Jung theories, and maybe some talks by Jordan Peterson about Jung, symbolism, and mythology; you may understand more about what they are talking about. Joseph Campbell also has some interesting theories on symbolism. Also if you just want to learn more about the symbolism found in Tool songs in particular, maybe you can find more analysis videos/articles about different songs. For the song Third Eye, you could do a search on the symbol of the third eye, and there will be a lot of info on it. Or look into Eastern traditions, and even psychedelic experiences and enlightenment, like ayahuasca ceremonies and DMT experiences. Hope this helps and made sense to you. Also, your english is pretty good, don’t worry about it haha. Take care!

This song will forever hold a strong piece of my heart. I’ve listened to tool since I was a kid with my dad and I always loved their music. It took me years to actually start to understand their music and learning to play guitar and bass made me appreciate their work on such a deeper level. My first lsd trip me and my buddy sat in his car listening to music and this song came on right as we both peaked. The single most healing and beautiful experiences I have ever felt. We didn’t even plan it out for this song to come on when it did, but everything fell into place perfectly and I couldn’t be any more thankful that it did. It completely changed my perception of the song and the music that they created to portray the song. Long story short, I fucking love Tool and their music will never grow old to me.

I agree with the meaning of ‘why are you running away’, reference to the fleeting nature of psychedelics (DMTat least), but i’ve always heard fear there too. Running away after being overwhelmed by the experience. Resisting. The whole song is an uneasy mix of awe and terror for me, and always helps me remember why i haven’t gone back there in five years.

I've always felt that at the part "Came out to watch you play. Why are you running away." was about how his trip is getting really intense and his 3rd eye opens. He starts freaking out trying to make it go away (running away) but there is no running or hiding when you are tripping hard.

I appreciate what you're doing here! I've always believed that music is one of the most powerful things on the planet... as it can be so polarizing or unifying and is so open to interpretation. It is truly amazing how people can take away something from a song and present it, as you have done here (very succinctly I might add) and someone like myself can have that "aha!" Moment upon watching your video. I've always known that Tool and MJK are very purposeful in crafting their songs... Maynard I believe, wants us all to decide for ourselves what each song is about. And while I DO just that... it is sometimes very enlightening to get a glimpse at someone else's interpretation. Great work. I look forward to checking out some more of your content soon.
