Jennifer and Pumps are joined today by Elle Duncan, ESPN anchor and host of the Elle Duncan Show. The three discuss the myth that it is the work-life balance and what Elle hopes the future for black women in journalism can look like. Pumps and Elle bond over a common love of softball while Jennifer gets absolutely railed for her “sport” of choice.

Just got home after three weeks in hospital....I live alone and the glory of solitude after three weeks imprisoned next to someone who will not shut up is something I don't have the verbage to express. Loved your guest, she was glorious. Jennifer, my friend Alec is a medal winning pickleball player like you, and I shut down his conversations about this "sport" every chance I get. Keep up your good work, I can't tell you how much I missed your podcast while in hospital and how much I enjoyed binging on it when I got home.

I live in New England and Elle was a sportscaster for our regional channel. She was my favorite and I was excited when she got called up to ESPN because clearly she was a star. However when Kobe Bryant died suddenly she did two things that have bothered me to this day. One, she coined the phrase 'girl mom' which has worn out it's welcome quicker than a gender reveal party. On a more serious note, she also helped continue galvanize his image while ignoring the fact that he was credibly accused of rape. Now she was far from the only one doing it so I would never hold her fully responsible. She was a small part of an entire industry that wasn't just reporting facts in a tragic accident but willfully adding to a legend of a person who had a very disturbing past that he never acknowledged or atoned for. I'm singling her out because of how much I used to admire her work. Whenever I see her now I can't help my mind from going back to that moment of time and how much it upset me. Fair or not, she is the to me figurehead of that moment and how media continues to fail victims of sexual assault, police brutality, and other assorted horrors. She talked about her and Kobe being parents of girls and as she was saying that I was wondering about the mother of the woman he raped and the victim herself. How must they have felt about all of the wonderful things being said about him after what he idi to their family? About how great and kind and nice and caring he was while the things said about that family were vile and he did nothing while he was alive to dissuade people from saying those things. I'm not a parent but I cannot fathom how devastated I'd be if I heard those things about him being such a great girl dad if he had done that to my daughter. Again, not blaming Elle for something Kobe did but it's something that has stayed on my mind this entire time. I encourage you all to read an article by Monica Hesse in the Washington Post entitled 'The Stories We Tell About Kobe Bryant.' It does a far better and more thorough job of saying what I have been trying to express.

Regarding the bit about solitude, I think it comes down to how optional it is. If you don't have a solid community of friends, family, coworkers, etc, loneliness is very burdensome. It3s much more appealing when you know that you could meet up with a friend or expect your spouse to come home at some point

I loved this episode - especially Elle's recognition of her privilege as a lighter, racially ambiguous women who will see rooms that a slew of Black women will not. I also want to gently challenge the ask that other people in liberal and social justice spaces "don't write off" supportive and open minded white folks. I agree, to an extent, and if this is a message for non-marginalized peoples. I don't think this messaging should be targeted at marginalized groups in social justice, liberal spaces. They in particular, have a right to leave rooms, and even interrogate rooms - even if filled with well meaning people. I am a Black professor at a PWI, and this is a central part of the conversations I have in the classroom - what allyship requires is discomfort and even space for rage, critique, and grievance.
