Absolutely fascinating video. Super informative! Thank you sir. Really dig your videos. I'm a relative novice in my rum knowledge, but learning quick. Your depth of knowledge is really useful and I appreciate it. Thanks!

Who knew that there is so much to learn about rum, fascinating insight into demerara rum.

Thanks Steve, that really helped clear up some confusion for me on what is a Demerara Rum and what is a Guyanese Rum and not assume they are the same.

This is one of your best video series so far! Great educational content. I hope you’ll keep that going with more countries coming. I knew most of what you said in the past videos but am a big fan of Mauritius rum as well but don’t know anything about it yet. And regarding Guyana: you could try to get your hands on the el dorado single still series with PM, Versailles and Enmore brought down to 40% to make a comparison video.

Yeah. I’ve tried them. (Very expensive here for a video £80/$100 US a bottle!!) and to be honest, the 40% ABV versions are really underwhelming. The higher ABV versions are much better. But obvs more expensive and harder to source.

Thanks for all the info. That was well informed. I’ve had the 3 year and 12. Actually the 3 year was my first good rum. I’ve only bought the one bottle. Made a great daiquiri but bad mojito. Good as a mixing rum. The 12 is a great sipper with a couple drops of Demerara syrup. Also great in cocktails when looking for a rich rum like in a mai tai along with Appleton 8 and S&C. Have not tried the 5 or 8. Skipped right past them

@@StevetheBarmanUK El Dorado 15 from DDL. Can't decide from Foursquare. I'm currently getting through a bottle of the Zinfandel cask blend. Really tasty stuff.

The new Rumcast episode (already released last week to patrons) features an interview with Shaun Caleb, DDL’s master distiller. So anyone who wants even more info will find it there! Well timed release 😄

The Ron Centenario 20 and 25 are my recommendation.

I used to really like Ron Centenario. But they are Rums from Costa Rica. Not Guyana 👍

I have just started my sipping rum journey and this video was super informative! Thanks! I brought a bottle of el dorado 15 and found it a bit harsh (high ethers) What do you think I should try next? Perhaps something smoother and more tropical or sweet??? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. 😊
@StevetheBarmanUK Жыл бұрын
Maybe Barbados?! I try to point everyone towards Plantation XO. Yeah it has a bit of Sugar added, but it’s bloody tasty.
@robertflaxman6014 Жыл бұрын
I’m reminded of when I tried El Dorado 15 side by side with a 15 year old Plantation Guyana rum. Basically no resemblance to each other at all! Although both excellent rums.
@StevetheBarmanUK Жыл бұрын
Yeah. I’ve had that a few times in comments now. Bristol and SBS and a few other Indy bottlers. I’ve not actually tried any non DDL Bottlings, but many’s feedback is that they’re a lot lighter than what they expect.

Really wish we had El Dorado 8 Year.... our local store carries 3, 12, 15, and 21 year. Rather than the 3 year I prefer cheaper DonQ or Cruzan for mixing, and 12, 15, 21 are astronomically priced off my budget.
@philgringo2438 Жыл бұрын
Hello Steve, thank you for all this information because the Ddl offers us very good rums. I tasted SBS Port Mourant blanc which is fantastic. So good that I'm going to age it in a mini barrel. I recommend it and unaged rums from Ddl are rare. Cheers 🧉
@StevetheBarmanUK Жыл бұрын
Hang on, there’s an unaged PM Bottling flying around?!! I’ve never heard of a thing. Deffo not from SBS. Need to go and stalk that now. 👍

10:00 100% the case when I tried a Hamilton rum that was labeled as a Guyana rum, not a Demerara rum. I was like "where's that rich flavor?". It was a nice rum, just tasted more like bourbon with a hint of hogo

How in your opinion does El Dorado white rum compare with other white rums?
@StevetheBarmanUK Жыл бұрын
Personally I’m not a massive fan. For a white, it’s too Coffee and Chocolate forward. But then for that style of Rum, it’s got a really tough gig is against say Plantation 3 Stars and Chairmans White. Or even Doorly’s 3yo. For me, it just doesn’t work as well in your typical White Cocktails or Mixers.

@@StevetheBarmanUK good analysis. I just bought some and am comparing it with Selvarey white and Angostura White Oak. Still haven't formed a definitive opinion yet though, but so far I like the Selvarey best.

I wonder how important the cutting water really is. Appleton says the same thing about their limestone water. But all Appleton rum in Canada is bottled and I presume de-proofed at at Forty Creek (a whiskey maker in Grimsby, ON, also part of Campari group). So if the water was that important, I would be getting Appleton that isn’t what they claim it is.
@StevetheBarmanUK Жыл бұрын
Although I 100% know Campari ship all their portfolio worldwide in IBC’s, I very much doubt it’s shipped at Cask Strength. It’ll be shipped at bottle strength which just makes it a simple process of bottling in the relevant countries. Shipping in huge IBC’s is simply lighter than shipping Glass bottles.
@victorvannatter312 Жыл бұрын
@@StevetheBarmanUK what does IBC stand for? Like a big tote? I figured the weight saving of shipping at cask strength would be cheaper but makes sense
@@StevetheBarmanUK ok. We use them to get water for our house. Good for firewood too

Have only tried a couple El Dorado rums so far but I like them both (especially the 5 year gold) Fun fact: Guyana is the Latin American country where atheist/communist cult leader Jim Jones led his Jonestown followers in a mass drinking of special Kool-Aid - the last drinks they would ever have. Did they use demarara rum in their deadly cocktails however? I think not.

Guyana may be in located in South America but it is not considered part of the Latin Community. It is more associated with the English Speaking Caribbean and WI due to it being a former British Colony
