"To be a good architect, you have to learn to see things differently than other people see" this could be one of my favorite phrases in your videos, it is interesting the way you describe how you take inspiration to start carry out your projects, by observing in places the materials, their location on the site, even their texture and why they have those shapes on their surface, when you study architecture you learn to observe the world with different eyes, improve your perception and even you You become more sensitive to the various environments that materials can create, thanks Eric for inspiring me.

Hey, I'm an architecture student and I have often found your videos very informative, engaging and enlightening. Where I study, they hardly talk about the things you do. Most of the time we just blunder about in the blind trying to solve the problem posed by our design and the project. We have a list of things which are wrong no way, means, or understanding how to make them write. And before we know it the semester has ended and we end up with a half assed design we aren't really proud of. I found your channel during this semester and throughout the course of the semester I've found myself coming back to your videos for guidance and information. Thank you. And keep make more videos! 😊

Studying architecture has changed my life. I see the world with different eyes, I often stop for a while and rise my head… I like to touch and feel the materials, knock and hear the sound they make, feel the consistency, the type of material. Is it “fake” or “real”? Thank you Eric, for your precious content.

Great Video! Living in a place like NYC, I think one learns pretty quickly. I'm also looking around at certain things and asking questions, analyzing, observing, etc. It's starts to become a habit and something you do without even thinking about it. But you start seeing that you look at things deeper and deeper each time, picking up a certain quality that can help you in school and in practice.

I've had similar musings on this topic in the past..wrote this a while back, thought you might enjoy it :) Everybody has a story. One of the great challenges of humankind has been expression of thought. It is remarkable how different people have different forms of expression; we are not only limited to speech and action. Through speech and action, we have developed and discovered several modes of expression, and have given birth to Art. Indeed, Art is expression. Two forms of art have fascinated me; so much so that I decided to write about them, and the close relationship that I realised they share. Filmmaking, and architecture. Earlier, perhaps due to lack of understanding, I could not really appreciate filmmaking. Today, perhaps because of age or exposure, I've come to learn that making movies is a very 'real' way of expression. It is not just about the actor or actress who play their parts, but about the writer, the direction, the person with the vision. When they Direct, they open their mind to the audience, and reveal what lies within it. He, is the architect of his film. Perhaps he doesn't want to just convey his ideas through speech. By involving characters and a story to tell, he essentially Expresses. When I watch a movie now, I view it as an insight into the mind of the creator. Every setting, every scene, every emotion, is an expression of the intricacy of its creator. This made me think. Isn't all this what architecture is about? A building is a physical manifestation of human thought, which has the ability to evoke emotions. The meaning of a building, and the spaces that it explores and creates have deep meaning. And great architecture stands true to its meaning even with the test of time. The architect of a building pours his heart and soul in desinging a building. What he achieves by doing this is that he Expresses himself through a building. Indeed, he building becomes a symbol of his mind, and of his emotions. An important contrast between films and architecture is that the former tells a story in which there is physical movement, along with dialogue and action. There are characters which very visibly Move and speak. It is vital to remember that all of the characters arise from one story. While in a building, architects achieve dynamism even without movement. Hence it is much more static environment which is still capable of 'moving' us. It dawned on me that both filmmaking and architecture are trying to tell a story. Both are powerful and poetic forms of art which are beautiful forms of expression. It is truly fascinating how we as humans share a very fundamental need, one to reveal how we truly feel, what we really think. Imagine if all of us were to keep our thoughts to ourselves, and lose the ability to communicate; what a chaotic world that would be! Thus, it is important to express. Expression is what gives us hope to survive, especially in an extroverted, noisy world such as ours. The thing is, not everybody has to express by talking, and that is very important to remember. Filmmaking and architecture are two forms of expression that have struck a deep chord with me, which is why I truly love and appreciate both these forms. So the next time you watch a movie or pass by a great building, remember to look beyond what you visibly see, and read between the lines to understand the creator; he who is trying to express himself. You might not understand them by talking to them, because their form of expression is the art that they create.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who struggles with "precedent studies." I'm 2 years in to a 3-year graduate program and have struggled constantly with this topic, especially since I'm relatively new to the field of architecture. A number of professors stress the importance of precedents, and while sometimes I can see the merit, for the most part, it seems to strangle creativity and limit the potential for any innovation in our projects. I've had better experiences in studios where precedents were encouraged, but not necessarily forced upon us. We used them more for instances when we weren't sure how a specific wall or component would be assembled instead of as a basis for an entire project.

Thank you so much for your work and your videos!
@30by406 жыл бұрын
thanks so much for watching...i think your struggle is not unique...all creative people face this and we all face it alone...my best advice is to leave the studio, get some fresh air and don't place any demands on your free time, that's the time when ideas flow...then just dig in and start making things...accept the idea that most of them will be bad and keep searching for the good ones...cheers...

Architecture today has become more dependent on the amount of profit a building s gonna give. The better architect today is a one who plans more number of habitable roims/units in a given plot of land. That's how it's going on right now.

precedent sure is hard, and I know they should be done at some point in architecture shcool. but for me the challenges are availability of the object you observe, how 'architectural' the design, and how much you can observe. each country, town and region has its own limits to do this. it is lucky for us in here (kalimantan) we could do precedent by observe through internet, but we can't get full grade except we observe the BEST object of observation which cost us more than our tuition per semester. but again, i really like how i can learn from this.

Hi Eric, thanks for this vid! It's important to keep reminding myself of how important it is to discover new things on daily basis and be a student forever. I have a question off topic though, do you have any suggestions for resources of ambient background music for videos (preferably free)? Thanks in advance!
@30by406 жыл бұрын
Hi David, here's where I get all my music> thirtybyforty.com/music/ I used to purchase songs individually but that proved expensive ($50+ per song)...which for YT vids just seemed silly. If you sign-up at my link you'll get 2 free months and you can download as many songs as you want and use them royalty-free forever even if you cancel. It's by far the best deal I've found and I love their selection. Companies like Epidemic have perhaps a deeper collection but they're also pricey...and although there aren't any snips available yet, but I hear they're coming. Hope that helps...
