Spoons are so effective for so many species. The bigger wider variety for pike, walleyes and bass, and the smaller narrower and more dense, like the Little Cleo, kill it on trout and salmon, but also work for warmwater species. The newer, "more lifelike" lures that are all the rage nowadays are decent as well but crazy expensive. Don't get me wrong, I love the latest and greatest but it just feels like I'm getting away with something when I go simple and old school and catch just as many, if not more. Have you seen these big swim baits and Japanese baits that go for $20-$75 per? INSANE!

It’s true! Totally agree. Super versatile bait and it won’t leave your wallet totally empty buying a few!

I love using spoons just been way too weedy at a lot of lakes that I have been to this year

Yeah that’s definitely the biggest bummer with these - weed catchers! Another couple of weeks and they will be basically worthless out on these smaller rivers and lakes with all the leaves falling and things dying lol

New sub. I’ve watched a bunch of ur videos and they are really helpful. I am in Rochester MN for a couple days from out of town. Could you help me out with a few good spots along any rivers (like Zumbro) or at any dams around Rochester? Also, can u recommend any specific type of lures for the best chance at catching fish? Thank you.

Luke I gotta ask, what rivers in SE Minnesota are safe to paddle up/downstream in, im looking at getting a yak and im more worried about running into scary ass current like the Root or lower Zumbro, any suggestions? (for the record if I get it im just gonna stick to lakes for a start)

Hey there! Are you pretty active and in good health? If so, none of these SE Minnesota rivers will give you a hard time now that they are back to being fairly low. Between all my river fishing around here, I’ve maybe had 2 or 3 pucker moments overall so it’s really nothing to worry about. Some areas you may have to hop off and wade over a section, but otherwise it’s mostly easy peasy. The stretches of the zumbro, root, cannon, etc are mostly flat watered - little “rapid” sections you need to worry about. Definitely worth taking the risk and doing it! Let me know if you have any questions regarding kayaks!
