Having a PC with a DVD drive (and a bay in the cabinet) is always worth it for me. I have got dozens and dozens of games' DVDs that I can't use in my "modern" PC, because decent new cabinets don't support DVD drives.

$170 for the whole PC is a great buy. Thanks for sharing. While the 12400f is faster it also still costs $130 to $150 new. That is close to the price of your (mostly) complete PC. Pair that 8700 with a Rtx 3060 a new tower cooler and you are set for the next few years (Maybe grab a solid 650W Psu).

Granted, Cyberpunk and Starfield are not among them. Forza 5 is though. I'll look into a repalcement when it starts choking and no earlier. What I like too is the comparably moderate power consumption.

What is 2K? In the convoluted mix of either saying 4K or 2160p, 2K is technically one half of the 4K aspect ratio, 3840x2160. 1080p is 2K. 1440p is 2.5K etc..

That i7 is basically on par with the 3600, so it's obvious that it would be capable. I was a bit surprised at how close it was to the 12400 in Cyberpunk, but then I remembered that the 2080Ti hasn't been ultra top range for ages now, the i5 would pull ahead significantly if a stronger card were used.

@@silverwerewolf975 I can give you that the i7 is 5% faster on average, but it doesn't wipe the floor with anything past 2nd gen Ryzen. If you want to upgrade that CPU to an i9, maybe you could try getting one of these Chinese CPUs, which are laptop CPU soldered to a 1151 socket (BGA?). You must have a compatible motherboard, and the seller will send you the new BIOS. I got a QTJ1, which is basically an i9 from 9/10th gen, with 8 cores and 16 threads, clocked at 4.7, but with unlocked multiplier (got up to 5.1 but wasn't stable, so lowered it to 4.9). Also, note that you probably will have to run the RAM at 2800 or lower. Some people got golden chips with 5.2 and 3200MHz RAM.

8600/9600 and 8700/9700 or even 9900 are also great upgrade options for skylake/kabylake users. A little bit of googling and some BIOS modding plus old-school cpu modding and one can get a really capable and cheap system. Running Z170 + 8600k myself without issue. I've started this system with z170 + i3-6100 in 2015, later bought 2nd hand 6600k and then 2nd hand 8600k. I don't really feel the need to upgrade, 8600k + 2060S still runs a lot of games at acceptable framerates. 1151 platform had great potential, pity Intel made it officially incompatible for commercial reasons.

I don't think it's anything to worry about as a gamer, as during even the most intense games it will max out at around 75 degrees, and the heat issues only occur when running all cores at 100% load for sustained periods. It is the only way to Play most Games for me. 16:9 feels like 4:3 after 21:9 :'( When first having an Ultrawide, gaming feels different, but not that different. God damn, it took me until reading this comment to realise they did eventually push that ReBAR BIOS update, I always assumed it never hit the Prime Z370-P after Asus' initial response, combine that with the fact Nvidia's site suggests that you need a 30-series card to use it I just never bothered checking again. Thank you for pushing me to have a look! I don't know why I even trusted EZUpdate to be accurate

I had the same board and an i5 8400. I got a 9700K to upgrade that CPU. Updated the bios but then realized the weak VRM would cause reboots every time the 9700K ran full tilt. Ended up spending on a Z390 Master. I know its stupid - but I really didn't want an unstable PC.

I'm using a i5-11400H (On par with the 8700k from what I understand) laptop with a 3060 and it's quite a balanced pairing, games like CP2077 really make great use of all the CPU threads so it's quite smooth. It's still got more than decent grunt for most games these days, maybe not for 1440p Ultra but for 1080p High it's more than adequate. I can see an 8700k having two years of usage for "enthusiast" gamers that don't need to crank everything but still enjoy some quality visuals.

Today, I would suggest a 2TB NVME unless the budget is over like 1500 bucks then go with a budget 4TB or premium 2TB (such as Samsung 980 Pro - gen 5 isn't really needed, but can be considered if money is just falling out of ones pockets).

Recommending using just a large ssd is pretty good advice as now a 1tb ssd costs about the same as a new 1tb hard drive. So at this point unless you go for a more expensive larger drive that has a better price per tb there isn't a point to buy a hard drive for most people.

I can confirm, the difference between an i5 8400 and i7 8700 in 2023 is a bit bigger than I'd imagined. The i5 simply can't keep up until the 9th gen i5 9400; same thing with the i3 not being "capable" in modern games until the 10th gen i3 10105f. I just picked up an i5 9400 with z390 motherboard and 2x8gb G Skill Royal 4400mhz for $180; socket 1151 is getting very cheap on the second-hand market, and still is extremely powerful for the price point.

I remember having to save up for a 250GB SSD in 2014/15 roughly. Kept a preposterously low storage drive as a boot drive for the longest time to create an ideal replacement. I remember that SSD and HDD combo being extremely sensible at the time though it did cause streaming issues with textures as I had a 5400RPM hard drive though it is fun now to have all those games on an SSD and see them shine with much reduced loading times and texture issues practically eliminated.

Nice to see effectively the same build upgrade route I went, tho' that was 4 years ago.. Z370, 8700k (but oc'd stable to 4.9 on a better asus maximus 8 mobo) with evga 2080ti xc... Last year I upgraded indeed to the i9-9900ks (at a steel.off fleabay) and a 1000w psu...and 32gig 3600ram... Runs everything I could wish for at 1440p (27" asus) Downside is now I'm stuck needing new mobo, cpu and gpu upgrade to at least a 3070 to gain higher 20 fps only and that's a lot of money for very little gain.. A few years to go yet till I replace everything bar the psu, case and cooling...

I can see the reason of owning PCs with 8th/9th gen Intel chipsets. Yes, it's all about being the entry level of installing Windows 11 without tweaking anything. But other than that, as long as you have a more capable graphics card & at least i7 chipsets, it can still play PC games well at 1080p or 1440p. It also can do emulation up till PS2/GameCube/Wii era games & Wii U titles if desired. Chances are even if the chipset might not support Windows 12, this PC is still relevant for the next few years until the early 2030s. Also can't wait for your i9 upgrade.
