I’m a young man. Almost every car I’ve been in has had power-operated windows, but I wish cars still had the manual crank. Electric window switches these days tend to be fairly reliable, but not perfectly so. A little redundancy wouldn’t hurt. Besides, I want to be able to open and close the window with the engine and battery both off.
@volvo094 сағат бұрын
@@DiamondKingStudioseven roll up windows were not perfect. Windows could still fall off the track if the supports broke from door use, gears could strip, or someone rolling up the window too fast gets hit with the sudden STOP when the window is up and breaks or strips the crank handle, or a regulator gear. Manual windows certainly broke, my dad had a few cars with broken manual windows.

Why has no manufacturers picked this up… Simplicity, durability, value and reliability is what people want in any truck or even car
@Stravinsky756 сағат бұрын
I mean, that's why Honda and Toyota cleaned up in the 80s and 90s. Nearly all of today's cars are durable and reliable, they just have a lot of complex features and cost a lot more. But that's because lots of people are willing to pay for them.
@robadams16455 сағат бұрын
It's almost like manufacturers build what people want to buy. You think they don't know their market? This truck wouldn't pass modern safety and emissions standards. By the time they made it compliant it wouldn't be this truck anymore.
@RustyShacklefordReal5 сағат бұрын

Govt Regulations killed off the "simple" stuff
@alexharker72235 сағат бұрын
The fact that anyone with a pulse now has access to near-limitless borrowing probably plays a part in that. People look at the payment and don't seem to care they'll be making payments for the next 84 months. Car manufacturers are more than happy to put in all the equipment when the price doesn't scare away customers. If car manufacturers had to design based on what people could actually afford, we'd go back to an emphasis on value, simplicity, and reliability.

Nice. South African farmer here. We had a 1986 Hilux in our family for almost 2 decades. 2.4L Diesel, NA, 55kW and I think about 160Nm, which was considered sprightly for the time 😅 Our Hilux story is similar to dozens of others you’ll hear, in that the truck worked incredibly hard, needed minimal maintenance and never left us stranded. We eventually sold it with near half a million km on the clock, for the same amount of money we originally paid for it 😂 (R24 000 ZAR, or almost $1300 at the current exchange rate) What’s notable about our truck was that it survived 2 serious accidents, one of which was a rollover with myself at the wheel, and it also caught fire once due to a wiring issue, but in each case it was able to drive home after the incident, before being completely repaired and put back into service. Try that with any modern CANBUS equipped vehicle… I think the secret to these trucks longevity is their utter simplicity and sound design. Everything down to the most minute switch is designed to keep working for as long as possible, and once it no longer works the rest of the vehicle must as far as possible be able to operate without it. Hence they generally just keep running even under extreme abuse. These trucks are scarce now in good condition, and regulations have ensured we will never see vehicles like this again, but it was nice to have had such dependable, practical, widely available and affordable vehicles at one point.

12:44 Manufacturers should bring that back and print the tow information next to the hitch. It looks just fine.
@jg82633 сағат бұрын
Agreed, also note that 3500lbs capacity listed there. Nowadays everyone is like, it's not a real truck if it can't tow 7k lbs, has 12 inches of ground clearance, plus lockers, and 300hp; yet clearly we got by with much less back then. This low tech and lower capability is what they should aim for in the midsized market today, not $50k, lifted off-road packages, with 7k of towing.
@Wheelman19662 сағат бұрын
Also worth noting is that the capacity listed is the capacity for the bumper, not the actual truck. If you installed a Reece hitch, you'd be able to pull the max amount for the truck. Which (for this truck) I can't imagine being much more than the bumper's rating.

These trucks are phenomenally rugged and reliable! Back in '85 or '86, the Namozine Vol. Fire Department, in Dinwiddie County, Va, had Slagle Fire equipment convert a new Toyota Pick-up (With the optional V-6) into a brush truck, with heavy-duty springs below, and a 'slip-in' firefighting package, consisting of a 150 GPM pump powered by it's own Briggs and Stratton engine, water tank (125 gallons if memory serves), hose reel with 200 feet of 1" hose, and hose racks for 150 or so feet of one and three quarter inch hose along with assorted nozzles, sections of suction hose, brush rakes, and other assorted fire fighting gear, in the bed. That little rig regularly made it's own roads into the woods, and fought hundreds of brush fires in the nearly two decades it was in service. There were a few other modifications, of course...it had larger tires and wheels, a winch, and a steel tube 'brush cage' protecting the wheels, tires, and cab, as well as skid plates, and, of course, lights and siren. The basic power train...V-6 5 speed, with dual range 4WD, was bone stock and bullet proof.

I own a 1 owner from new 1986 Toyota 4Runner SR5 with the 22RE. 107k miles and counting. Luckily mine has the clock, original Toyota Stereo w/graphic EQ, AC, Power Windows, Locks, and Cruise Control. All of which still work to this day.

The North American pickup split from the Hilux in the mid-90s not the mid 2000s. The 90s 4runners didn't have a driver vanity mirror either, a lot of cars were like that

Little does Doug know that 2wd low (i.e L4 without hubs locked) is one of the best features that we lost with the advent of automatic hubs. 2wd Low makes reversing a trailer a breeze.

This exact pickup is what I learned to drive on.

Ah, the Toyota Hilux... This is probably one of the greatest pickup trucks of all time. It was a worldwide hit for sure, and at least where I'm from, it's heavily used as a farm vehicle. Usually, I only see models from the 2000s to now on the streets, rarely from the 90s and 80s, but everytime I see them, I get really happy. I hope that the next owner of this Hilux cherishes it like no one else would

The height of the truck and bed makes it so much easier to use the bed. As you can load it from the side. Doug could never lean on a modern truck bed like he did in this video.

I remember seeing Marty Mcfly's truck when I first watched Back to the Future and thinking how cool it was, and I wanted one so bad

Not a word about the thing that makes these desirable today, which is how compact and lightweight they are compared to any new pickup today. Even what we call a “compact” truck like a Ranger, looks like a hulking giant next to this.

My mom had a late 70’s yellow Toyota pickup truck- very reliable… you had to be careful driving in the rain- it would fish tail very easily

I've never seen a HiLux from this decade with so much chrome... rear window, rear bumper etc

If this truck was painted black and had tube bumpers and KC lights, it would sell for twice as much, but would be perfect for throwing a couple sleeping bags in the back and heading up to the lake.

The vent window went away because they were a security nightmare. Easiest way to break into a car, ever! My Isuzu Trooper II had these and you could just wiggle the glass from the outside to get the seal to show a gap, and then a coat hanger and 5 seconds and the lock was pulled up and the car was open. I was the guy who had the “NO RADIO NO TOOLS” sticker in my window to try to prevent even more break-ins.
