Only advantage they have at their price point ( or arguably main) is storage space lol. Going by the steam app ( and gamestop website) if you are able to get your hands on one for a refurbished 512GB it is $359.99. Currently the steam app is showing out of stock, so it would be a game of Russian roulette with GameStop if you were to go the refurbished route lol.

Pretty sure he lost all his space because the cloning process also clones the size of the source drive onto the target. If you take a 256gb SSD and clone the files onto a 500gb SSD you will only have 256gb useable on the 500gb and a partition will be created but inactive with the remaining space, you're missing. I had to use NIUBI Editor to move the 2 storage partitions together then extend my active partition to allocate the unused space.

The hardware specs for the price of the Ayaneo Next Lite are excellent. Evans's poor review stems from being too incompetent to properly install SteamOS. I'll take 512GB for the same price as Steams 64GB version.

I really think it's a swing and a miss to not have SteamOS/HoloISO pre-installed. Most average users aren't going to go through the hassle you went through to get that running, meaning they're stuck with a subpar experience under Windows, or have to manually expand the filesystem after the HoloISO install. Either way, seems like a nice bit of kit!

I think it's fine, given Ayaneo really doesn't support their devices like Valve does with their Steam Decks. I wouldn't want Ayaneo to give people a bad first impression of Steam OS just because Ayaneo would likely half-a$$ it. And that would hurt Valve in a way, too, because of those poor first impressions. I also wonder how many meetings Microsoft made with Ayaneo, just like in the 1990s...

I would think most people going into the market for a "steam deck" would understand that the Holo OS isn't the official steam deck OS. It kinda defeats the purpose of it being the budget option when you have to pay for a windows license. If it wasn't for windows they could have kept their cost at $300. Since they went with Windows it added a cost of $50. Like Austin stated at that point just spend a few more bucks to get a premium option. They are advertising themselves as the budget option, but are at the very edge of going into premium pricing, especially if you consider used / refurbished lol.

Interesting product, although by this time next week they will already have several newer versions making this version out of date.The almost weekly rate at which Aya Neo cranks out new devices makes me wonder about long term support. This already looks to be a bit of a waste of money, I would just save up a bit more money and get a Steam Deck because the ecosystem and the product have synergy and I just don’t think Non SD can compete, even when some devices have way more capability.

the only thing I can think this is good (games aside) is to have a *portable* windows machine without buying a laptop. I mean, the cheapest laptop is like 200€, but we are talking about a 4GB ram ddr3, intel celeron, 180GB ssd without a GPU. Going up to to 350€ you can get a *refurbished* HP laptop with AMD A6, 16GB ram, 120Gb SSD or a new generic brand with intel n5100, 12GB ram, 256SSD, windows 11 and integrated graphic card "Intel UHD Graphics". This thing will burn down the laptops in the same price bracket. Only downside is you will need to bring around another trinket in the form of a mini keyboard or use the virtual keyboard. If you need it, at that.

i absolutely love my Legion GO. I purchased it because I was going on a trip to Oklahoma and was going to be spending some time in an airport and plane and wanted something to do. The battery life isn't the best ever but being able to hook it to a dock and do some actual work with a keyboard and mouse was amazing. I'm glad I spent the money on it

As soon as I heard "Ryzen 5 4500U", I knew it was DOA. The Deck is $400 for the 256GB model - its iGPU is running circles around 4500U's iGPU. The only thing the 4500U is good for is with CPU performance - but they had only one job, and that was to make a game console, not a laptop (I wish they had done it).

The thing about AYA and Holo ISO is that: 1) AYA does not own Holo ISO, so there's very little they can do on their end to fix it. 2) Holo ISO is 1000% for enthusiasts. If you're not an enthusiast DO NOT USE HOLO ISO! There was a LOT more Austin and company needed to do to get the Next Lite to work properly with Holo ISO. This is not me dunking on Austin, but more dunking on AYA for saying that Holo ISO works with the Next Lite. That's pretty scummy of AYA to say that. Here's my theory: AYA couldn't get permission to use the official SteamOS directly from Valve nor could they get permission from the makers of Holo ISO. But they still really wanted to say they had SteamOS on the Next Lite... So they just said you could install Holo ISO onto the Next Lite, implying support without actually offering any.

Had to sell it after 2 months because I barely used it outside of my house because of how big it was. @@scorpionscythe maybe it's just because I was in this hobby for a while, Deck is impressive, but back then it was like "Do I really need all this performance if because of the size I only gonna use it at home where I already have a better PC?", so I would always take some other handheld with me. And nowadays we have handhelds that are more powerful yet smaller and lighter. I still think that on a software level Deck is the only handheld that can fight with something like Switch or other actual consoles, but I would really like to see them working on some Slim version in a few years alongside Deck 2 that maybe not as powerful, but at least actually portable.

Running Linux Mint on both my older HTPC-converted-from-a-server and on my potato laptop. Steam with Proton, Heroic Launcher and Lutris all working great on it, can't complain. Still use Windows 11 for my main PC for a few reasons, but if those reasons didn't exist I'd probably install Linux on that as well... since the Steam Deck came out, Linux gaming has made huge strides, so I guess we have Valve (in part) to thank for that.

So I finally decided to install EmuDeck/Emulation Station on my Steam Deck. I was against it thinking I can play many Gen 6 games on my Galaxy Z Flip3. Glad I changed my mind because GameCube and Wii games play flawlessly on it. I didn’t need to tinker with the settings for F-Zero GX and zero audio stutter or crash. While Wii emulation is perfect on the Steam Deck thanks to the touchpads acting like a mousepad for a pointer. There is a bit of a learning curve. Installing EmuDeck/Emulation Station isn’t easy peasy like what I did on Android. I had to get used to using the Steam Deck in desktop mode and typing from it. And Linux doesn’t play nice with Windows or Mac. I couldn’t transfer my ROMs onto it that I ended up manually downloading every ROM instead and then unzipping it which takes up a lot more time. I tried taking out my microSD and putting it into an SD converter and my MacBook Air still couldn’t read the files from it. Let’s just say, emulation on Steam Deck still has quirks you will need to be prepared for. I decided that I only want to emulate 7 platforms. I can always play my Gen 3 & 4, PS1, PSP, and a few PS2 ports on my Vita. Here are the seven - Jaguar Saturn Arcade (MAME) PlayStation 2 Xbox GameCube Wii I don’t need Dreamcast, PSP, or PS3. I can’t find a game I want to play on the Wii U as I already own a Switch Lite. I came to realize that the original Wii is pretty awesome and I underrated it all this time. I have as many games I want to play on it as the GameCube. And Wii is a souped up GameCube as it did play those GC games. It’s weird playing Super Mario World on a Steam Deck with a 7”/720p display and looking blown up like a digital zoom where you can see the jaggies from every sprite. I’ll leave the Super NES games and most games prior to Gen 6 on smaller devices with smaller screens and lower resolution. I can always play Dreamcast on one of my smartphones. Reason being is I prefer Redream over Flycast but I want Redream on Emulation Station but it cannot open from there. Below are all my ROMs for each system while I decided to delete all the Super NES, PS1, Dreamcast, and PSP games since they’re better played mostly on smaller Sony handhelds. *Jaguar* (3) Atari Karts NBA Jam Tournament Edition Rayman *GameCube* (10) F-Zero GX Mario Kart: Double Dash!! NBA Street Vol. 2 Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Sonic Riders Star Fox Adventures Super Mario Sunshine The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess Wario World *Wii* (10) Back to the Future: The Game Donkey Kong Country Returns Kirby’s Adventure Wii Klonoa Mario Kart Wii New Super Mario Bros. Wii Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing Sonic Colours Super Mario Galaxy Super Mario Galaxy 2 Kirby’s Adventure Wii is also known as Kirby’s Return to Dreamland but I decided to spell the former to match the box art like spelling Sonic Colours with a “u” in colors since the box art is the PAL one. Mario Kart Wii is growing on me and it plays much better on the Deck than my Flip3, but I still prefer Double Dash more. I tried playing Skyward Sword but it plays too awkwardly for the Wii version. Probably why I stuck with the GCN version of Twilight Princess even though I originally beat the Wii one. I can always get the Wii U/Switch version of Skyward Sword. I’m not a diehard Zelda fan, so I don’t care if I never ever play Skyward Sword or Tears of the Kingdom in my life. Breath of the Wild put me to sleep. While I don’t really care about Zelda games and always find their stories and characters way too bland, I will say Nintendo remains the GOAT at making games. Think about the Wii. We keep talking about GameCube emulation but the Wii has a very underrated library. Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are superior to Mario Sunshine. And GameCube never had a great 2D platformer that Donkey Kong Country Returns and New SMB Wii are. The only reason why I prefer the GameCube even though the Wii is backwards compatible to it, is because GameCube has F-Zero GX, Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, and my favorite game of Gen 6 in NBA Street Vol. 2. All three of those games are also found on my Z Flip3 and all would be in my top 10 favs among all Gen 6 games. But the Wii is awesome. It’s better to emulate Wii on a Steam Deck than ROG Ally thanks to the touchpads. I love and hate Nintendo, but I have to admit that they have the most replayable libraries. I may need to reevaluate my console rankings and may put GameCube and Wii over Dreamcast and PS2. I don’t really have the urge to play PS2 games. I always found their early games looking muddy. Wasn’t bright and beautiful as DC and GC. And Sega is very arcade-y. Many DC games have very shallow gameplay which includes Sonic games. Nintendo is always the one I go back to except for their Nintendo 64. I think that’s my least favorite home console from them. I’ll play NFL Blitz and that’s it. Don’t care for Mario Kart 64. Beaten Super Mario 64 twice but never really cared for it. Technology was limited circa mid 90s and thought some levels didn’t look finished. Sunshine was prettier but had awkward F.L.U.D gameplay. Galaxy 1 and 2 is when Nintendo got 3D Mario right. I don’t emulate a lot of handheld games except Ridge Racer 2004 for PSP. You can just play them on the actual handheld it was made for. I always found handheld games as the Walmart version of a port. Remember Mortal Kombat on the Game Boy and Game Gear? Yuck. I want the bigger budgets coming from home consoles. I have no interest emulating Switch games on a Steam Deck when I have a Switch Lite to play those games. It’s weird how PlayStation is my favorite gaming brand but I don’t have the urge to replay many of their games. I love AC4: Black Flag but I will admit this style of modern gaming from Gen 7 can feel redundant and even complicated with all the different menu screens I have to look at. Nintendo uses cartoony graphics which gives them a timeless look while adding cheerful, charming, or soothing music. They act like Apple as a corporation but they still want to be like Disney by appealing to everyone of all ages. I’m 43 and my favorite genres are racing and 2D platformers and Nintendo caters to me with Mario Kart and 2D Super Mario. 1. Vita 2. Deck 3. Switch 4. PSP 5. PS1 6. GameCube 7. Wii 8. Dreamcast 9. PS2 10. Super NES 11. Why did you try to clone the ISO on the machine instead of ditching Ventoy (very nice tool when used correctly) for a direct image to stick copy using rufus, balenaEtcher or even dd? I get that this is meant from a consumer point of view but even then someone with actual computer knowledge could have tried to install it again instead of Austin.

It's clearly not a recommended purchase. Since you already have it, though, it's worth checking to see if ChimeraOS works better on the hardware than the HoloISO image they provide. It would be funny if it did. There are alternate ways to get to all the settings. However, what's the point of the HoloISO image if it's not actually customized for the device.

Cyberpunk is a game that shows decent sometimes great fps for a handheld when you benchmark. But the second you jump in game your averaging high 20 to mid 30 fps, while some areas are 45-60.

I'm not sure how valid Austin's problems were I'm not sure the Holoiso install was completed correctly. It's definitely not user friendly but I'm not sure what was done was correct.

Normally with ventoy, you just copy the OS iso to the flashdrive, boot from flash and you can choose the iso to boot from, you can put as much iso's on it as you like (as long you have drivespace offcourse), the fact that ventoy didn't show any iso means he didn't copy the iso, copied it wrong or put the zip on it instead off the iso.

It also depends on the size of the SD card and how you set it up. For example I was having an issue with my ventoy drive in a 256gb with secure boot and uefi. Which can work but if I recall you have to format a partition where you store you ISO's to a max of 64gb or 100gb. Otherwise it will hang and not find anything for some reason. So if they didn't turn off secure boot or uefi and the SD card was too large then that could be a reason why it initially failed among other possible reasons.

If I am not mistaken some people on KZbin looked into Tiny 11 and found malware on it. I also think they discovered that a lot of security features needed by windows were turned off as well. So I would avoid using Tiny 11. In reality it's just a custom ISO of windows that you can create yourself. So if you really want to remove a lot of bloatware while still being secure it's probably best to look into how you can create your own windows ISO.

The process of installing Steam OS looked like Austing was trying to jailbreak an iPhone. And the fact that you lose functions of some of the buttons is a huge oversight. This thing is going to flop hard.

I know the struggles of installing Steam OS on a Chinese laptop ( I'd post of link but don't want to be that guy - video on the channel ) I got holo ISO installed but it locked up on startup screen a few times and when I tried to upgrade it, it completely broken the OS so I went with Chimera OS. Chimera OS works fairly well but it came with its own issues I had to iron out with tons of online research. The process is somewhat stressful and was never as simple as it seemed for ETA Prime. Steam needs to release a working version of the OS for different hardware!

I didnt wana limit my kids to steam os/stean deck, so i went against your advise; I definitely bought the Ayaneo next lite. Lol. My kids also play games not available on steam as easily, like fall guys, fortnite, etc. It'll be running playnite. Wife has a steam deck that doesn't connect well to wifi, constantly disconnecting. There's a market for the Ayaneo next lite. The upper echelon of gaming youtubers isnt exactly who they had in mind. Ironic since thats mostly who does the reviews and impressions videos lol. 😊

Yeah, a pre-owned Steam Deck is better in every way. I was a pre-order for the original Steam Deck and my uncle came round, saw how awesome it was, and immediately bought himself one on eBay and has been emulating all of the old games he used to play as a kid on super old hardware. Didn't need to spend full price on it. It works perfectly and he loves it!

The $300 price point just sucks for these devices because $100-$150 extra can get you a significantly better experience. Even $50 for the 64GB eMMC Deck (while it's still available) wouldn't be a bad idea if you get an SD card with it, and you can upgrade to a larger NVMe SSD later.

I saw another review that went into more detail about how Aya Neo went about this process. Aside from their instructions recommending Ventoy, there's another issue. For some ungodly reason, they didn't supply a normal ISO image. They supplied a broken Clonezilla image. That would explain why Austin went for the weird Clonezilla route over Belena Etcher or Rufus.

Austin, the Windows partition is probably still there. You most likely split the drives, installed Steam OS onto the second drive, and created a new partition.

This is just a repackaged version of the original Aya Neo, which is five years old now. It was very good for the time, but has been far surpassed since then.

So SteamOS is reading the input as just an Xbox controller. You can bring up the Steam Settings with the "Home" button + A. Might give an option to adjust TDP and all that. But the fact that it took them a couple of weeks to make the HOLOISO image available is... not good. Ayaneo should probably just stick with emulation.

There is a reason none of the others like Lenovo/MSI/Asus bother trying to compete on price with the stream deck. Steam subsidizes it's stuff by having it's own store. That's why all the other handhelds go big on hardware because that way they can do something steam deck can't even if they cost more. Trying to match steam or beat it on price just means you get a shittier device with worse hardware.

I was expecting Austin to find out how awful the iGPU was on the Z1 non-Extreme, which even though has 6 cores like Zen 4 Ryzen 5s, has only 1/3 of the GPU compute units (4) instead of 2/3s that the other Ryzen 5s get (8, for reference, the Z1 Extreme/Ryzen 7 or 9s has 12 GPU compute units)

if you're only interested in emulation, get the ayn odin 2. performance will run circles around this with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. if you want to play recent games get a ROG ally Z1 extreme or steam Deck. nothing else really is out yet that can match them
