The cutoff was the same issue I was having. Your motor is drawing more current than your battery can provide so it is shutting off to keep from killing itself. Thats why when you turned the current up it shut off. For instance my motor draws 30amps max where as my old battery didnt provide 30 so if I revved too high it shut off

4000 watts divided by 72 volts is 55 amp your current limited by the batteries I do realize this was a test but for that current youll need 6 parallel to keep it safe unless cells are rated at 20 amp constant then you can go 3P. Your also current limited by the XT60 though rated at 60 amp they will heat at 30 amps heat is voltage sag along with current loss EC5 can handle 40 amp constant and stay cooler than XT60 but totally your choice on what you use. Now the wire not sure what your using but OFC pretinned is best and at that current 8AWG wire is not always convenient so back to the OFC pretinned. It can handle a bit more current than non-pretinned wire 10AWG high temp would be best that gauge wire will suffer some loss but short as possible will help and the high temp skin will keep it safe. The battery for high current like this .4mm thickness x 8mm wide nickel strip will barely get warm at 40 amps, you can still touch it with no issue. Just thought ide toss this out there so you can get the max power and efficiency from your bike and batteries and keep it safe as well.

Looks like each balance wire is actually connected to two cells. So the measured voltage of one cell is actually an average of two single battery cells in parallel. One of those cells could be really high internal resistance. So it is possible to overcharge one and not completely charge the other but appear to be ok as averaged. Ideally you should measure each single cell. It will probably be fine though.

What sort of parts do you need in terms of the chain and chain ring / cassette ? , cause with a lot of torque of course one will need strong parts.
@andykirby5 жыл бұрын
Chain ring is raceface which many mid drive hotrodders have been using in the the last 5 years as it’s proven to be very strong (aluminium that wears like steel) rear sprockets are a problem UNLESS you only use the high tooth gears (25-30teeth) because more teeth are engaged you won’t strip gears, try 3000 watts on an 11 tooth and it will tear it apart the first time, it’s not good to labour the motor like that anyway, best to high rev. Chain needs to be a KMC ebike specific chain, wheel hubs might be a problem but I haven’t come across this yet. I’m looking into using ATV or Go Kart chains, sprockets etc. Soon I hope offer a strong drivetrain for builds like this, with the new high power cells available now it’s great to have a bike that has a decent amount of power but also has an incredible “turbo” mode for those that want to scare themselves 😁

Yes I saw that big block, looks great, I’m wondering what it’s like on the handling because it’s mounted on the swing arm so you still have unsprung weight like you do with a hub, it must be much lighter than a hub though...., it would be better mounted off the suspension. the thing I like about the Bafang Ultra is the all metal gears and the fact that it’s a very neat installation once you find a suitable frame, other thing is you get pedals so it’s good if throttle only ebikes are not allowed in your country. I’ve been doing extensive tests at full power with 4000W and it doesn’t get above 55 degrees which is just crazy. I think it would easily handle 6KW.

If you don’t mind me asking, what is the top speed you reached at 72 volts?
@warlockboyburns4 жыл бұрын
people have been reaching 40mph at 1500w so I'd bet it's 55mph plus.

I have a bbsHD and it's my second one since I got the first bike stolen! .....bad decision to lock in a bad neighborhood while in a lecture! I got an idea that it would be cool to get one of those phase runner controllers and the display so I could have a way to switch on the fly from my 48v pack to a small 72v pack in order to have a sort of electrical TURBO switch. I already have 39 Samsung 30q left over from my last battery build so, it wouldn't cost me much! .... Any suggestions as to whether this will work?

The best way would probably be to just use the 72V pack and then set the cycle analyst with two power profiles, one for low power (commuting etc) and another that unleashes the full power. A 72V setup tuned down will be better for the batteries than a 48v setup run at higher power (less amps, heat and no need for field weakening to reach decent speeds as 72v creates a High RPM anyway). Keep it simple 😁

You create an air channel to vent air through the battery compartment. Probably best to waterproof them first though.

It will hold you, but with a higher chance of bending the frame.

Awesome videos dude!! So how do you get a bafang motor from 1500 to 4000 watts is just from the bigger battery?
@ianmangham45703 жыл бұрын
By increasing the VOLTAGE and AMPS, Voltage times Amp's equals WATTS

Great video Andy. I love my bafang but i'm on my 4th chain in 1000 miles. They last for a while and then twang ! their gone. I think we are reaching the limits of standard mountain bike chain sets with these motors. Can these motors be paired with a Gates carbon belt drive like the GTech ebike(albeit with vastly more power)
@andykirby5 жыл бұрын
Wow, what chains are you using, I’m using KMC ebike chains and haven’t broken one yet... hopefully it will stay that way!

Try motorcycle chains
@andykirby5 жыл бұрын
Yes that would be ideal but we need matching chainrings and sprockets. It would be worth trying to engineer something. The freewheel hub is also a weak point at these power levels.
@standbyme63955 жыл бұрын
kirby just ordered a front freewheel crank set for my diy setup. Cant be smashing shins now. Had to machine my sprocket down to size to fit on my motor so hopefully I wont get any skips. Part of me wishes I would have got a kit but the lessons learned are invaluable

KMC e9 ebike chain is my new favorite. I broke 3 others before this one now its Bullet Proof as well as a new Raceface chainring and chain guides photos.app.goo.gl/X1jRBk59sU9yVEZh9

Hi, do you think that a cheap throttle could limit acceleration or top speed?
@andykirby5 жыл бұрын
You’d have to check the voltage sent to the controller at the throttle input and also know what voltage the controller interprets as full throttle. This is the great thing about using a cycle analyst here in this video, you can visually see the voltage, throttle position and output to the controller so you can make sure you are getting a full throttle signal correctly into the controller if not you can just adjust it in either the controller or cycle analyst settings.
