The C100 is definitely one the most film-like digital cameras out there. I was stunned the first time I rented one years ago. No film look filters needed in edit. Now you've got me thinking I should buy a couple more.

I have 3 C100mkii's, all bought second hand, and use them for artist interviews, coverage of art events, coverage of music events (opera, big band, orchestra, soloists and more)...I love the ease of use, reliability, battery life, XLR inputs with good pre-amps and picture quality...file sizes are low for the quality of image produced which makes it good for longer event shooting

Still stporting a C100 MK I as my B camera. It's amazing how well it holds up next to me C70, especially when there's enough light... It's a wonderful camera. The mark 2 has the *much* better EVF (which is amazing in bright sun), the AF as standard (it was an add-on for the C100), and the screen is a full flip-out. It's also hardly any more expensive. On that screen, it's OLED. If it had 10-bit 4K, I'd never replace it. I love this thing. Next to the very latest 4K 10bit cameras coming out, its image holds up but is definitely outshined. Personally, I think 4K is a massively over-hyped advent, but when you combine its resolution with 10-bit, you get such smooth gradients that it really does take the image up a level.

I have used the C100 for many projects including broadcast TV commercials. It is a true cinema camera, not a hybrid. People want 4K or DCI, but you can achieve amazing results in 1080p using a high-quality, fast lens and shooting log. I personally like the Zeiss Milvus lenses with apertures at T1.4, but you get the idea. And let us remember that broadcast TV is still not 4K.

@@whistlingdavetaviner3663 We still have a C100MK1 as well. It never gets used these days, but no...the Mark1 has no aesthetic advantage over the Mark2. In fact, for some reason I think our MK1 has a warmer flatter color look at any setting than the MK2s we have. Not sure why, it might just be ours, but I find the MK2 is just a better overall camera and on the used market, likely around the same price as a MK1. If you are looking to pick up one of these cinema cams, its worth it to hold out for MK2.

I don't have time for that, and I don't know how, and I don't want to know how... so yeah, kind of a big deal that a camera should get it's exsposure and colors right without any further machinations with it.

I might be a retired network TV engineer Pro. Who was there for the birth of, High Definition Video. Back in the late 1980s. Remember the 1980s? When I went to the first High Definition Video Symposium, convention in, was it Switzerland or Germany? I forget? But I was there. Before we had any, high definition video standards. And considering, we got one of the first High Definition, video camera lenses. At NBC-TV where I worked. The lens itself, was $250,000. And was actually, chained. To the camera pedestal. With a most unique and unbreakable chain. Because the lens alone was, $250,000. That is not a typo. That was one quarter of $1 million just for the lens. Of course by, 2004. I had acquired my first, HDV, high resolution, consumer video camcorder. I think I picked up for, $300 in an open box sale. So considering that first cheap consumer camcorder with HDV was around $600 list price. What you got there for $500. Is, an absolute, mind blower! I have no personal problems that it's, 10 years old. In fact. In many ways. That might provide for a better picture. Then a more state-of-the-art version. It'll be softer looking. A little smoother perhaps? Maybe not quite as crisp? WHO CARES!?!? As it's nothing but a larger palette of colors, for you to use. Or so to speak. It shot plenty of feature movies. Nobody complained. Nobody knew. That it wasn't actual film still. And that's really all that matters. It wasn't necessarily designed for, fast action sports coverage? It was designed for, Cinematic, use. And may not have stood up under the rigors of, network television sports coverage? It was one of the first. Of these new cinematic, video cameras. And Canon does not make crappy stuff. They make great stuff. They always have. And now they have found their new calling. With these devices. In competition with Sony and everyone else. No one should stick their nose up at this unit. It is still quite viable. And now for a simply ridiculous bargain! Oh my God! Of course lenses will still cost Ya. But they are some of the best, of the best, in the industry, today. If you could afford them. And so I have not been looking for such devices, myself. As I must be stupid? Last thing I got was 4 Canon XL-1's. And 2 digital video switchers. For my, rock 'n' roll band video productions. As those, Standard Resolution, digital video camcorders. Back in the 1990s. Could actually deliver a widescreen, 30 frame per second progressive, 1.23:1 aspect ratio. That's, Panavision style, Aspect ratio. And with that. It yielded a picture of nearly 1000 lines of resolution. On a Standard Resolution Camcorder. It was record-breaking! Using a, anamorphic, digital vertical squeeze. To the picture. And virtually yielded a high-resolution video. Before we ever had high-resolution video. For the consumers. And the professionals working with no budget. So this is an incredible find! Oh my God! Who would have ever thunk? One of these $8000 beauties for $500?! Oh my Lord! SOLD! Well this is truly a wonderful video you have posted here, sir! Thank you! Thank you. RemyRAD

What's the advantage of Cinematch over Colour Space Transform to match Arri's colour space? Is it just less nodes? Also, wouldn't pushing 8 bit footage to a flatter profile than intended and converting to Rec 709 introduce images artifacts? I used a C100 for my first documentary and I don't remember it having this much lattitude.
@NatesFilmTutorials
@NatesFilmTutorials Жыл бұрын
Great question! Color space transform tool essential converts it to the same color space. Where Cinematch differs is that they test and compare the different sensors. You can see the difference around 5:13 where I select color space transform and sensor match. You still have to nail your exposure or overexpose and bring back down, otherwise you will get artifacts. If you are careful with how you shoot and color grade you can get some great looks out of it!

Great video - I'm part of the C100 M2 cult and I still shoot with it - small, gradable files, insane battery life, decent autofocus, dual card slots, decent EVF, built in XLR audio, NDs!!! If they had made the C100 M3 4.2.2 10 bit 4K they would have sold a million of them. You nailed it on the exposure comment - the C100 codec is unforgiving on underexposure - especially in the shadows. I agree shoot native 850 ISO whenever possible, but I feel it's decent up to 10,000 ISO, Also I personally prefer to shoot wideDR because I honestly feel this early CLOG sucks - Canon has come a long way since. I used to own the MKII and recently in the past year picked up another one and it has been so fun shooting on it. The image still holds up and, honestly, if you export in 4K and no one is the wiser.

I run both a MK1 and MK2 C100's with a Canon E 24-105 F4 L IS and Canon EFS 17-55 F2.8 (along with my GH5 as a 'floating camera') and they are still absolute beasts! The picture out of them in LOG is very, very gradeable and has a nice creamy quality to it. Plus if you upscale to 4K using Topoaz Video Ai its insane.

Hi -- I love the image quality of the C100. Can you get this same look from the C100 Mk2? There are those who say that the Mk2's image quality is a bit more video-like compared to the more 'filmic' look of the Mk1.
@WayneRobsonArtist

@@whistlingdavetaviner3663 Yeah I have both the Mk1 and Mk2...I prefer the Mk2 (even though the footage matches perfectly) as its codec is a bit more optimized and someo fhte added small features make life a wee bit easier. I hope that helps.

I'm still using Mark II after almost 10 years with my C70 as a main camera. It's incredibly easy to match them, which is almost impossible with any mirrorless, the image is too digital on all mirrorless cameras, no mater how good or expensive they are.

I had a C100 mark1 when they first came out and it was revolutionary compared to the Sony EX3 I was using - when I needed 4K for a project I bought a Sony F7 but hated using it compared to the C100 (better quality but felt like a backward setep) - so bought a C200 as soon as it was released - I'm still getting lovely pictures from it now and although I have a couple of 6K BMPC, URSAs and a LUMIX S5II - it's still my 'go to' run and gun camera - modular but solid as they come, long battery, built in ND, beautiful picture even though it's 8bit apart from the RAW (which seems to make no real difference), great in low light and useable built in viewfinder. Out of all my cameras, when I fly and need something totally reliable, it's the camera I take. I think that the new pricing makes it a bargain. I still have my C100 and used it for an event - picture-wise it totally held up against the C200 and Blackmagics.

😖😖... Canon say its a cinema camera BUT it's not on paper! It's not even up to Broadcast spec 422 at 50mbps (2015) if you was to project Canon c100 footage onto a 'Cinema Screen' you would notice color banding and machroblocking on fast moving footage with fine detail from the 8Bit codec. It has professional in puts and out puts and I see the camera as a work horse tool for weddings, corporate events, budget film making ect... But as a cinema camera.... Theres nothing in the specs that gives it that stamp. And yes Canon has done this before when I bought my 1st canon DSLR 500d I think... was advertised as full HD video but didn't say the frame rate was only 15fps witch is unusable! So I had to shoot everything in 720p. Canons smaller chip camcorders at the time were at full HD and captured to 422 colour to Mpeg2HD I think at 50mbps+ so good for broadcast and low budget films. And I'm not a Canon hater my first camcorders in the 1990s were canovision e90 and a Canon XM1... But then the Sony PDX10 was offering a true 16x9 for the same price. The cheapest cinema camera I can see on the market right now is probably the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera HD as it captures to prores422 at 220mbps or 10bit raw, it's not great on the iso range (you just need faster lenses and a speed booster) only a few inputs and out puts... But on paper it's broadcast spec and raw makes it a cinema camera.

Hi there! The C100 does have limitations, no 60p, limited bit rate, so you do have to be careful when color grading. I think the C100 is totally worth it if you need an extra angle for performances and documentary work. Ultimately you will have to decide this for yourself. Hope this helps!

"INSANE?" Definition: In a state of mind which prevents normal perception, behavior, or social interaction; seriously mentally ill. Canon, Sony and others are creating wonderful new cameras that surpass the need for film stock or Arri, Mitchell or Panaflex film cameras that would make it impossible for young or new filmmakers to be able to learn and experience their craft. Now anyone can take their ideas with not much more than a good camera like the one mentioned in this video, a sound package and minor lighting and computer editing and some hard work and rival anything coming out of Dead Hollywood. So why not leave the incorrect slang 'insane' comments to the uneducated street crowd, and move into speaking like a pro and being a pro. You water down your credibility before anyone has even clicked on your video. Just my opinion, with over 30 years in the film industry.

“Even today, you’ll have trouble finding a camera that is this capable”. What are you smoking? You sound very out of touch with the current market. The C100 is a dated 50mbps piece of tat, even low low end projects don’t warrant this - it’s barely worth using as a doorstop!

I think the pricing that Canon did back then is why I left them. They just completely went out of control and priced themselves out of the market. I'm glad they are making things a little more affordable now but only because Sony, Fuji, Panasonic and other brands caught up. Otherwise, they would be running a muck.
