There are stores in Thailand that made clothes and accessories from trash, pop taps, lotto tickets, bottles, etc. And they cost about ฿100-300 roughly $10 or no more than $30. And these cost $500!! Yes, sustainable practices should be the norm but buying $500 handbag should not.

There is always be people that want to spend $500 on a bag. He is giving them a more ethical (even if not completely ethical) option. He made a cheap product designer, that's all any designer stuff is. Bags, jewellery, clothes, they all can be made cheaply. Adding the word designer means they made it from more expensive materials (like leather), higher quality (not just glued together, looks to be stitched) and fewer of the product.

Guys, as a brazilian, let me tell you a "secret": these bags are super easy to make. It's a good DIY project. If you already know crochet, this is basically done. If you don't, it's one of the first projects you can try to make. After you learn the basics you can be creative and add all sorts of things, like paint in different colors or add fake fur/leather, inner lining, keychains, anything your heart desires. No need to spend 600 dollars for sure!

So you're telling me, taking these tabs off cans, coating them in non-recyclable materials, transporting them to a warehouse, paying 3rd world employees "a fair wage" (not fair by our standards) to stich them together into a bag that costs way too much is a good idea? The metal tabs are already widely recyclable as they come attached to the cans. Adding these extra steps to create garbage is not helping the issue
@Ryan_Richter
@Ryan_Richter 3 жыл бұрын
It's more or less adding an extra opportunity to create a product out of the same waste materials. By weight, the value of these tabs will end up being more valuable than as scrap. Fulfilling this commercial niche isn't exactly an innovation in terms of reducing waste overall, but it might inspire more niche products to be invented. Maybe at that point there would be high enough demand that it starts to have a significant impact on reducing waste.

Completely agree with this except for the wages part. While it may not seem fair to us in modern countries, there is a difference. Here in modern countries, capital goods are in surplus, while labor is scarce. So in turn capital goods are cheap and labor is expensive. In third world countries, capital is scarce and labor is in surplus, so labor is cheap and capital is expensive. Factory jobs are very attractive to poor ppl in third world countries, because the alternative is owning a fruit stand just struggling to make any money at all.
@LaCyclone
@LaCyclone 3 жыл бұрын
@@psychotic6708 True, however the reason the factory's are being built over there by company's based in well off countrys is because the standard they have to give workers is little to none and they barely have to pay them due to their economy. For a premium $500 bag you'd expect there to less exploitation of the poor.

@@SuzysRedStripes Aluminum is the most common element on the crust of the earth, so no, that's not the problem. The biggest problem in this case is the energy waste from the processing of aluminum and manufacturing of pull tabs. That being said, it's better than nothing, and could help raise awareness of the issue of pollution, or at the very least make caring about the environment "cool," so it's not completely pointless. And, if memory serves me (it's been a while since I've watched this video), the purse fabric and thread is made from recycled plastic, which is a definite plus. Edit: As I suspected, this is the comment I already mentioned the recycled plastic on. It's nice to have a good memory, even if it only serves me in the most pointless of ways, lol.

Yeah, but you do have to consider that they have to ship the bags to London, and they have a store on Regent Street, which is where some of the poshest stores in London are located. Plus, everything in London is more expensive (sadly - I know because I live here lol). It does seem a lot for a bag, but the regular fashion industry charges the same for non-sustainable bags, while also not paying their employees well (or treating them well). It is not the labor where most of the 500 is going. It is the enormous markup. Just make up some slick marketing garbage about 3D printed recycled store and all of a sudden it is worth $500 more. The real cost in the final store is about $20 max. That includes shipping halfway around the world. Labour is cheap in 3rd world countries because 1st world countries keep it that way.

VIDEO: “fashionable hand bags made with can tops” ME: “dude, I’ve been making reusable crafts since I was 10, this is nothing new!” - can top brackets - duck tape hand bags and wallets - recycled cardboard, wood, and plastics for home made clocks - broken jewelry (turn it to sewing or new jewelry) - glass bottles used for mosaic designs - plastic bags to reusable trash bins - dead light bulbs used for tree ornaments with added 5mm beading Easy to do and not worth money to buy these.

That's great that you upcycle. I love upcycling. But that has nothing to do with designer bags. Rich customers want a $500 bag anyways, might as well have a non plastic option for them to buy.

Aluminum cans are already recycled with great efficiency. Now these people making handbags, are combining plastic, rubber and fabric into this aluminum material making it harder to recycle next time around. This is wasteful if you ask me.
@chlorophyllheart
@chlorophyllheart 3 жыл бұрын
Hmm, maybe. Where was the rubber? Natural rubber degrades easily so I don't think they had rubber. If the thread or fabric is polyester then that is bad. But these bags look like they will last many years because of the leather and metal. The ideal would be for the bags to be fixed so they never have to be thrown away or recycled. Ideal doesn't mean it will happen though lol. I still think it's better than a plastic designer bag.

Bottletop is doing a great job of combining sustainability with style, proving that fashion can be both trendy and eco-friendly. The brand’s focus on upcycling and helping disadvantaged communities is a great example for businesses to make a difference. However, even though they recycle a good amount, it’s still just a small part of the huge waste problem in the fashion industry. It’s a positive step, but much bigger changes are needed. More brands need to follow this example, and consumers should demand sustainable options to make a real difference. The good news is that more people are showing interest in ethical fashion, which could eventually push the industry to be more responsible

Reminds me of the Tom's. It's a similar concept. You find a market that already exists (alpargatas in Argentina, people from Brazil recycling can tops to do crafts), claim it as yours, make your product way more expensive than the original, and make the buyer feel good about themselves because they helped a cause (raise money for the poor, save the environment) they could have helped with in many other, more efficient ways.
