I've had bags like these for at least 7 years now. A crafty woman from the countryside figured out the same thing as he did, wove them and sold them at festivals. The big bag (the size of his) was 25$ I think. :P

I honestly don't get how you can call something a luxury item and charge whatever for it. The only thing that's luxurious is the price. People have done this at state fairs for decades and they still make atleast double.

@@djprogramer973 Yes, but I would venture that the reality is more complex. This type of weaving is time consuming. Typically, women's work is undervalued, so if a woman sells her bags for what they're worth just at minimum wage, they'll be upwards of $50. But nobody at fairs and festivals will pay that price for a plastic bag made of plastic bags made by a woman who does that as a hobby. (and women know that, so they price their stuff at a price that feels decent, not a price that reflects reality). This guy here has premises to pay for, employees too. To pay for everything and make a little profit, unfortunately, the price tag has to be a bit high. But it's too high for "normal folks" and too low for "high end folks" so he chose to up the price and gratuitously claim it's a luxury item. For my part, I'd keep to state fairs and let ppl with too much money bite the bait.

@@djprogramer973 Honestly, it's the manufacturing. They aren't using assembly line machines. It's near enough all done by hand. So the price reflects the actual labor cost. But I do agree, for his product to be viable to all but the most snobbiest. He needs to drive the labor cost WAY WAY down. Then he can market it to the masses.

The idea is nice, and I like that they're not outsourcing the work, but 130$ for a recycled plastic shopping tote is unfortunately inaccessible to regular working Joes. I wish them the best of luck.

No one besides hipsters and ultra liberals with deep pockets are going to spend that kind of money on totes. Especially when EVERY grocery store on the planet offers cheaper alternatives. Usually for less then $5. Food Lion, Walmart, Kroger, Publix, etc. They all have their own totes for like $2 to $5. Hell, paper bags are a much cheaper alternative. By a HUGE margin. So, while I appreciate his enthusiasm, he has to get that price tag down to say $20. I know that's still a steep price tag, but considering he's not a major corporation with billions in the bank, I highly doubt he could get his manufacturing costs down enough to compete with said major companies. So offering them at a "reduced premium" would be a better start. As consumers have proven, they'll gladly choose "green alternatives" at a small premium because they get all warm and fuzzy inside. But $130? That warm and fuzzy feeling doesn't even factor into the economic equation. Or, if he truly believes in the CAUSE sell the product at a loss. But again, that's asking for quite a lot from a "small business." And in my personal opinion, especially in NYC is NOT a viable business model. Even with other products his company makes, making up for the loss. As I said, I appreciate the enthusiasm. But let's be real honest, his customer base is like 1% of the actual market he's catering to. (Every human on the planet that goes grocery shopping.) And no cause in the world, is going to be practical at that price point. You absolutely HAVE to make it a viable alternative for very little extra money out of pocket, for people to subscribe to it end masse. As we all love causes, until they drain our wallets. Then we'll gladly continue choosing the polluting mainstream product.

Their look doesn't fit with the price in my opinion. At supermarkets, bags that look like this can be bought at the counter if you want to buy a lasting bag. And that's for just few dollars.

My great aunt has been doing that in Brazil since the 1970’s. She would cut plastic into strips and make threads then crochet bags. There wasn’t a lot of money in the household. It was a way to reuse, keep her busy, and make her daughters some bags. She probably would make other things for the house too. The totes are pretty common here, you can find those for about US$5 anywhere around here.

In Austria it is common since many decades to bring your own bag to the grocery store. The plastic bags were pricy and there was raised an awareness for the problem. Since a couple of years plastic bags were banned, so now you can just buy paper bags if you forgot your own bag.

Great idea, but esthetic appeal needs improvement. Perhaps, instead of fabric tape they ought to try rough stitching to connect the pieces. I like the colors and the texture, but that fabric tape makes the bag look cheap for that price

I think he brings out a good point about up cycling instead of going fully on cotton based material. Just imagine how much more cotton production is needed if the world switched to it overnight. The upcycling should also apply to number of other materials including old clothing used for household cleaning. I also think that the price is high for these bags at the same time.

I have better idea. It has multiple steps. 1. Ban usage and production of plastic bags. 2. Send all existing plastic bags and other plastic stuff that we don't need to venus. That planet is burning hot and atmosphere consists of toxic gases. And launching few more rockets wouldn't do a lot of harm considering that we launch them A LOT. 3. Use fabric bags. They are durable and can serve for a long time. They are pretty popular where I live and my fabric bag serves me for 2 years already.

Australia has had film plastic bags banned for 5 years now. Ppl buy sturdy fabric bags for a dollar and they last a couple of years. Film plastic bags are used to wrap moist food. We can buy thicker plastic bags at checkouts for 15c. They last a fair while. It's very common to wash your fabric bags and buy some in designer patterns and colors. You can get fancy fabric bags with internal pockets for $50...very strong. Those bags made by the NY company would be too pricey for us. But as floor rugs...hmmm!

They should be able to dye the finished bags (all black, a deep blue, some darker type of color so the design over the top stands out) and then do a dramatic logo/limited edition designs of their own on them. Maybe a subtle marketing campaign that has people looking for them (everything's handmade, therefore, a short wait list should also be in order), build up some brand recognition, and really work the appeal to exclusivity angle, and *then* maybe they've got themselves a luxury product.The lining is awesome btw, I'd tie that into the color scheme of each design/logo.

@Louis Vanguard considering a normal bag and one not even necessarily a fashion house name that required this much labor and hours of work would usually be at least $200. Luxury brands your looking at a couple grand. People forget even picture brands can source materials affordably. The cost largely is in the process, and working with a plastic textile is not easy. Though I do also recognize that for a lot of people especially in developing countries, $133 could be someone’s entire monthly income. So I guess it’s all subjective

I have to look at the energy cost of this reclamation and net product produced and really wonder how this could be called green. Just looking at the transform value set by the selling price, there's 100+ dollars of energy (including the human capital) spent making this. I view all of that as energy in. That's a huge transform cost 1000x of other choices. I also wonder how this operation and this product contributes or doesn't to the micro-plastic contamination problem.

Here in the UK they now charge you money for plastic bags have done for a couple of years and tbh I don't think it's done much except make the government more money. Very recently the Co-op have introduced biodegradable bags which is a step in the right direction I guess

The solution should not be to convert the garbage, but to not produce so much garbage. Recycling also requires a certain amount of energy and you use plastic items no matter what. still harmful for the skin, for the earth. I think this kind of recycling calms people and encourages the continuation of plastic use.

Plastic starts disintegrate eventually in heat etc so I wonder if the way they tightly weave it stops this

In Aus we have to buy our bags at stores, any and all bags, reducing waste and the plastic bags in major food stores are made from recycled plastics. It has been a great system and I endorse it fully. I have even started to say when I am handed a bag with the stores that are exempt from the laws, I don't need from a store I say keep it for someone else, I brought my own.

Yes we need the entire world to ban articles and come up with an actual way to get rid of plastics without it harming our environment. Funding and science need to be put into that, but in the meantime we can't knock people who come up with innovative ways of reusing this horrible material. In this case I think they just need to reimagine the design of the bag. That tote won't sell well for $133, but another deign might, such as maybe a backpack, a laptop bag, a surf or boogie board bag, an instrument carrier. The options are endless because its basically for ANYTHING that requires a carrier/bag/container. It could also be made into hard plastics. They just need to think broader. Best of luck to them.

Seems that the plastic should be melted down at minimum melting point to minimize gases, and rolled into thick plastic sheets that can then be made into totes and other products. It would be faster, cheaper, and would possibly be able to process more products, like placemats, school notebook covers and others. Not exactly artisan, but....

Refuse to consume plastic to begin with. If I forget my reusable bag, my "penalty" is to load item by item to the car, and then to my kitchen. Do not take anymore bags.

It's a brilliant and sound idea with a strong bag at the end. And he knows his market, New York is expensive. That's not a lot for the enviromental/sustainably conscious who can afford it easily.

Ridiculous $133...the point of tote bag is so business can stop giving out plastic bags...here you have a bag company capitalising off a tote bag which should be cheaply accessible by people.

nice idea. other ways to use plastic is to grind them and use mix to cement using for roads, buildings, homes etc. and grinded plastic can create hollow blocks

Dude, all my local supermarkets make their shopping bags from recycled plastic and it costs 75 cents. No I won't pay 100 dollars for a bag made of garbage.

I wouldn't own one, let alone pay money for one (especially $133). How can those be sanitized without melting them or soaked in chemicals? No thanks. I'm all for plans to use all that plastic though rather than throwing in landfills.

instead of solving the plastic problem which it claims , this solution will further exacerbate it. it will lead to substantial increase in the amount of microplastics in emvironment, which indeed is more harmful
