This $70 Translator Pen runs Android...let's break it and see if it can play DOOM! (iWish)

HOWEVER you folks were generous enough to donate towards seeing these AliExpress items once again...I appreciate you all so much :)
I did a live stream where I was looking for just ONE good item to purchase so then I had my schedule all done before October 10th which is when I'll take my break until the 31st.
And during the stream one viewer told me about some Pens that run Android...I went "what?".
Sure enough they existed and I went and purchased one and well...let's say you are in for a very long journey of what this thing had in store for me.
I know another KZbinr has already looked at one but it's not quite the same pen. Plus I wanted to do a LOT more with it.

just pulled out some tools and took a closer look at the software of this pen. the password for the settings menu (11:35) is 201807

for me it looks like a blood glucose meter. which incidentally also can sometimes look like a pregnancy tester. in any case you have certainly shed some light on a seriously oddball device. Never knew android translation pens existed until I saw your vid. Keep up the good work.

You should get a samsung/smart fridge (could be off wish, alien press, etc.) and do a normal video on it. Now of course you can't do a camera test (last time I checked, you cannot pick up a fridge) and play around with it. Just a video idea. On a serious note; before Essential Phone went under they were developing a weird TV remote looking Android device/phone/thing. It wasn't a translator pen; but, that's the first thing that came to my mind when you unboxed this. The second was a glucose meter for diabetes.

If you can root it, there are some hacks you can do to system files to enable USB-OTG on some devices. That could make it useful as a low powered network appliance

LMAO That Chinese assistant app is great. You said "shut up" and it found a song named Shut Up and started playing it. I heard something about Alibaba when it was responding to "hello", so I'm not sure if that's who made it, or if it had found a product listing on Alibaba that had "hello" in it, or if it misheard "hello" as some Chinese phrase. Listening to it again I think you may have told it to call you "hello", which it transliterated into Chinese and will now use as your name.

I'm pretty sure you could use "wm size" in an adb shell to make the screen run in a different resolution and downscale it to the actual screen so you could start gta:sa on this thing :D (and also get a more sane aspect ratio)

Idk if it'd work on this but my go to on android devices, like the scanners at my job. Is to try and get into keyboard settings from the keyboard. Sometimes theres a dedicated button, sometimes its holding something down like the period key.

For the price it actually works very well, I was expecting it to mess up every sentence but it was almost perfect. Does it work offline with internal dictionaries or does it just use baidu/google translate etc online?

Yeah so for chinese, japanese and some other languages it works offline completely fine. Sometimes it can be a bit hit or miss but works most of the time.

One possible method to get a browser on something that otherwise doesn't have one is to have a wifi captive portal that instead of showing terms of use, a login, etc, it instead redirects you to Google. Of course the device has to be able to deal with captive portals in the first place.

I have one of these that I have been trying to hack but i cannot figure out how to share the pictures I take with the camera on it cause right after I take it it just instantly tries to translate it and doesn't let me send it to anything.

That's not the talkback voice that's actually Google TTS. A very crappy version of Google TTS I might add. But yeah that's Google TTS, it doesn't come with TalkBack, it's used with talkback yes but that's not a talkback voice that's Google TTS. Just wanted to let you know that. 😊

Try running Xash3D FWGS (basically a source port of Half-Life) on this. I saw a video from Bringus Studios where a similar translator pen was modded to get it's "launcher" removed and then the guy decided to play Half-Life on it

SMOOREZ, the aspect ratio of the screen is 160:43, or 1600:430. The video closest to that aspect ratio that I know of is Bloc Party's music video for their song Hunting For Witches, with the aspect ratio of 33:10, or 1419:430. I actually pinched a membrane button from a SNES classic controller and used it on the board and only 2 of them work. One is for volume down and the other is a back button. The others I could not get to work
