I think the plant that the boy said (touching the leaves) as yam is actually a taro in modern usage. Cocoyam, although almost similar at first glance to taro, but the former has broader and green leaves, thicker petioles and whose tubers grow from corms. A single taro plant produces only a single tuber or corm per harvest. A single cocoyam plant may produce up to a dozen corms per harvest. During maturity, you need to pull the whole taro plant to harvest its tuber. With cocoyam, you don't need to pull the whole plant during harvest if you choose not to because you may harvest only one or more lateral cormels growing from the parent plant.

It's not surprising at all because colocasia plants are not native to Kenya or Africa so most locals can't differentiate between two different species of similar genus and family. Colocasia especially taro and cocoyams are natives in South Asia, Southeast Asia but later spread out to Polynesia and Pacific Islands and soon to most other countries across the globe.

Especially the village folks, they rarely speak in English..But most can get what you are saying. But there are alot of things lost in translation and because of your English..For instance, we rarely use the word liquor, we often call it alcohol or beer. And I think the local name of the alcohol is chang'aa, which seems like a Swahili name and I don't know the meaning. Of course there is also the issue that in most homes there are no video recording devices so most are not that comfortable talking in front of the camera. Still a good job despite the challenges
