It distresses me to see these hard working men breathing all the fumes from the aluminum and dust. And then to see all that molten metal around their exposed, sandaled feet! The working conditions are appalling but the finished product is so amazing.

The MOST Hardworking people ever! Sadly, they are so underpaid. We complain if we (Canadians & US) can’t make at least 20.00 a hour, we live in modest homes (most of us) we have access to clean living environments (most of us do…but everywhere our environment is suffering, a whole other story)….so, appreciate what we have, support if you can and THANK GOD EVERYDAY for the things we do have.

This is another example of unskilled casting. Every step they take is done wrong. This can easily be seen when the open mold is shown and you can see the defects in the cope and drag ( top and bottom). The finished parts also show defects galore. How people can call them skilled is beyond me. You don't walk on a cope to ram it. You don't drop the dusting bag on the sand. Don't remove the pattern, dust a release, then replace the pattern. A bit late for the release? They pour wrong and use steel which contaminates the aluminum (cosmetic so doesn't matter a great deal). For some reason they walk on the filled flask. It seems to be an attraction like a moth to light. Use this vid as a demonstration on how not to cast. As they demonstrate every wrong method instead of anything correct. I'm not harping on these workers, just saying if someone had taught them how to cast maybe the praise would be worthy. Most of that "smoke" coming from the poured flasks is simply steam. Flask is the top and bottom metal thingys. The top one is the cope and the bottom one is the drag. 0:30 They're using pop cans and don't have a chimney. If pop cans are all you have that's fine... but no chimney? I also noticed there is a fan but isn't pointed for everyone's use. 1:08 You don't place the pattern in the drag after it is already filled with sand. This is sloppy and produces a bad casting. You place the drag over the pattern, sift release powder, fill, ram and flip over. He never ram med the sand into the drag. Maybe walking on it does this? This will cause the pattern to shift in the sand. 1:37 He doesn't rap the pattern and he lifts it directly out of the sand by hand. His finger must have somewhere to go and that has put a depression in the sand, this will be molded. He tips the pattern out rather than lift it out. This distorts and stresses the sand. The sand pattern breaks. 1:44 He now bounces a powder release bag onto the sand disturbing the pattern he has just made. It is also too late for a release powder as he has already molded the pattern without it. Removing the pattern causes some sand to stick to it...causing defects. 1:53 He replaces the removed pattern, not only an unnecessary step but one that disturbs the sand and causes defects and distortion. 2:03 He SHOVES the gating patterns into the sand rather than molding them in with the pattern...or cutting them out. This disturbs he surrounding sand and can cause it to wash out during the pour. 2:13 He bounces the bag on the pattern and sand. It should be shaken above the sand, this way it covers the mold with release without disturbing the sand. 2:30 He has just placed the cope onto the drag with sand that he has previously dumped there. This may seem to not matter but his style of cope has a grid to help hold the rammed sand in place when it is removed. He just rammed this sand into the already prepared drag with no place for the sand to really go. The grid did this when forced it into place. 3:04 He has just completely filled the cope without riddling the sand for a fine reproduction of the pattern (he didn't do this on the drag either but he did that completely wrong). He also hasn't rammed any sand against the pattern yet. 3:22 He is walking on the sand as a method of ramming it. This takes longer than ramming the sand by hand with the correct tool and also results in an unknown density of the sand after ramming. The ramming tool is nothing more than a length of wood or metal. Walking on it is also not very effective as he is ramming all the depth of sand through the grid. 3:34 watch how much slag is being taken out of the metal. It normally would be a bit of a skim off the metal not a scoop full like he has, much less three. This is what happens when you melt a lot of little bits of aluminum or contaminated with lacquer. Cans have both. The parts are cosmetic so don't matter much... other than surface quality if done badly. 4:12 he puts the pattern into the filled drag. This is the lazy way. the cope should be upside down with the patter in it -THEN the sand is put in place and rammed....and not by walking on it. Also notice that this method does not actually ram the sand at all and isn't rammed to the pattern ...at all. 4:53 he presses the gate/runners in. This is also wrong as well as there isn't a gate AND a runner. 6:28 instead of using a ramming tool he uses his feet and his calibrated weight to ram the sand into the cope. It would have been quicker, more consistent, and a better ram if he had used the proper tool... which is nothing more than a piece of wood! 6:48 he digs out the pouring basins. Completely wrong shape and method. There are no vents, and no risers. 6:58 he is almost doing the sprues correctly, using a tool for this. Wiggling the sprue cutter( piece of pipe) Around disturbs the sand. 7:00 he steps on the flask. 7:45 he has opened the flask. All those black areas in the white are bad. the sand has broken away and are stuck to the cope (top) that is against the wall. Time to start over as this is no good at all. 8:21 stop it. You can clearly see the black areas. Top right is large. Those are where the molding sand has broken away, the mold is defective and the casting will be defective. There is no reason to proceed. 8:25 is another LARGE defect. There are small ones scattered all over. Again 8:35 shows a big black spot in the white releasing powder. The Sand has broken away. 9:58 they begin to pour with poor pouring ladles. They have to move the extremely long handles too far to provide a small pouring action. Look closely and you should see the turbulent slop of metal into the pouring basin. This sucks air into the metal. The metal should pour smoothly. This is like putting dirt in your shellac after building and sanding a fine piece of furniture. 10:03 immediately after pouring one guy feels the need to stand on the flask! 10:06 notice the considerable care A470 takes on pouring the second flask. Not one but two people step on the freshly poured flask. 10:25 four sprues (where the metal goes in) and no risers ( where the metal and gasses come out) No pour is complete without walking on the freshly poured flask There are also absolutely no vents of any kind. This means the gases from the pour have gone into the metal weakening it and producing a poor surface finish. 11:00 now we not only stand and walk on the flasks out of some mistaken need to, but there is no room to work properly. 11:07 Mr. ambidextrous not only uses disturbed, 'cold' metal but pours by, himself, two ladles at the same time. 11:15 This is a good shot of the aluminum oxide or slag that's on top of the molten aluminum and what you don't want to disturb and pour into the mold. This is more how you should be pouring. 11:30 not only is walking on the mold a requirement but now we are doing it before it is filled with metal! So far all the examples show that the most important process, the pouring of the metal, is an after thought and something to get out of the way. 11:36 he has apparently just stepped on the molten metal of the other guys pour. 12:47 the part is being bent. 12:59 is a close up of a defect. That black spot is where there is no metal. It was caused by sand falling into the empty space of the mold. the panning shows how sand has stuck to the pour and ruined the surface. Also pitting of the surface probably from gas entrainment of the metal. 13:08 has a flange around the flower on the right. This is from metal leaking between the two halves of the flask. 13:12 shows a defect in the lower left and shows the large embellishment has differing gaps in the design. This is from the sand breaking away during molding leaving spaces for the metal to flow. On the right the open spaces are seen, on the left they are not. 13:16 you can compare the design and see they are not the same. Oh -quite possibly they are pouring too hot, to high a temperature. I'm guessing at that as they are walking all over the place with tiny amounts of aluminum and are still able to pour. I'm not a professional, I'm only a hobbyist. So if I know how to do it correctly why don't they?

What kind of poverty can make a man do this kind of hard work in this kind of unhealthy environment ? Yet they are proving themselves human beings creating the most beautiful art melting their life. Respect and sympathy goes for these people
