For a signed 16-bit integer, the range is -32768 to 32767. It's more likely the game just isn't programmed to handle negative values for defense.

My Sephiroth amiibo and Joker amiibo are quite terrifying, most notably my re-trained Sephiroth amiibo with the Spirits Rodin The Infinite One, Mario Tennis Aces' Critical Hit and Shine Sprite's Special-Move Power. Now he'll actually use Gigaflare/Megaflare at the edge of the stage and he'll even try and keep you from coming back, too! One night I was playing Smash and my Sephiroth amiibo actually leaped up and used Megaflare in MID-AIR! It was insane and I know I did NOT teach it how to do that! Oh, and if he uses Octaslash to rush and kill you off the stage, you're dead, including if he uses his Final Smash. He even knows how to use Octaslash in mid-air! Both he and my Joker amiibo use the Aggressive trait and I've never been more proud of my two boys!
