6:10 that hazy flare is what sold me on this lens, i'm always on the look for good lenses that flare like that, not easy to find one that does it so softly and much less in a blueish tone. Such a beauty!

Looks solid and I’m totally with you on the flares. I wish it less and/or was amber. Then we need full frame camera manufacturers to let us start shooting open gate
@JeremiahBostwick2 жыл бұрын
Sony limits open gate and looks at anamorphic as a high end cinema camera only option in order to differentiate their product stack. Most others manufacturers follow suit, including Canon. Panasonic is the only one willing to allow lower offerings to have open gate or other square formats. So that said, if you want a ‘cheap’ FF anamorphic cam, I’d recommend the BS1H with a 5”/7” Blackmagic Video Assist for anamorphic and BM Raw. Otherwise, Z Cam also allows for square formats, but unless you’re a post processing veteran, you may not enjoy the protracted workflow. ZLog still doesn’t have a proper CST or transforms in Resolve. The plug-in is basically broken at this point. So, you’re more or less forced to use LUTs or better yet conversion DCTL’s. Like I say though, most aren’t used to doing all that or want to deal with all of that.

Sirui lenses are freaking great. I’m so impressed with my 50mm. Incredibly sharp and well built! My 50mm seems to be really toned down with flares. I almost have to make it super intentional by shining a light directly into it or pointing it at the sun. I remember them saying that the preproduction units had more prominent flares than the production ones. Wonder if that’s the same case here?
@ChuckRiseUp2 жыл бұрын
I was actually surprised with my copy too! It doesn't flare as much as the review I've seen on YT. The flares are way more controlled, less intense. And Sirui is marketing the 75mm to be less intense with flare, so I guess the pre-production unit that Caleb has will not reflect the final product. And I'm still amaze by how sharp the 50mm is wide open (and in this case, the 75mm too). For the price point, this can't be beat!
@SuperLala332 жыл бұрын
@@ChuckRiseUp the flare difference was also quite big with the 50mm in pre production and final product (just by looking at reviews, I dont have hands on experience). honestly the blue flaring issue is a plus for some shooters. If you look at the iconic films that use anamorphics a lot of them have a blue haze that has subconsciously been associated with big budget films. The Panavision lenses used on the original Star Wars films are a great example of this.

I know this is probably a ridiculously low priority item for most folks on this channel, but honestly I'd love AF on some of these affordable cinematic lenses so that I could take them out for Reportage/Docu work, even some stills. Given that they're getting cheap enough that it's not the end of the world if they get banged up a little bit. -- I love to shoot landscapes in telephoto, but I don't love the way cylindrical panos look (and often don't stitch together without artifacts). Likewise wildlife shooting (which includes video), most of the time it's not practical to shoot with a full cinema rig (for follow focus) on the camera since we have to crawl on the ground for low angles or sling the camera over our shoulder to get up trees and stuff. I was at a parade yesterday where i'd have loved to get a bit of that anamorphic look to floats coming into frame from the back.

Until they give us an open gate option on the Sony FX3, not ordering this lens because the final image is simply too squished… On the aps-c 50mm sirui i just have to do 1,2x on the clear image zoom and the vignette is gone. Here on the FF lens you have to crop more to get a pleasant 2.35:1 image so basically, on the aps-c lens I’m retaining more detail.

I'm curious. what happens if you break the chain of zoom/scale in post and add 1.010 to the horizontal axis. Would it make the bokeh more circular and objects more proportionate? It is great, affordable anamorphic lens. I admit it. but It also has one big dealbreaker : not interchangeable, not adapter friendly mount. filmmakers often use different camera brand for different needs. sometimes client demands certain camera brand, sometimes you need certain features in a camera, sometimes, simply, you just wanna test the lens with new camera. but this lens makes me stuck in a single camera mount no matter what circumstance is. moreover it has only mirrorless mount option so it cannot be used with lens mount adapter, cannot be rock-solid tighten to use cine-grade follow focus motors because there is no positive lock option unlike PL and certain EF mount cameras and adapters. that's why i gave up to buy the lens and stick on anamorphic adapter. If it had been a PL lens I would have bought it.

@baqcasanke2 жыл бұрын
Open gate is recording with the entire sensor area without any aspect ratio crops. Most cameras crop the top and bottom or the sides depending what mode your using. Open gate means to record the entire thing. Some cameras sensor is larger then the 4:3 ratio that it uses for photos and the 16:9 ratio for video. Some are 3:2 and when recording open gate, is the perfect size to use a 2x anamorphic lens and then de squeeze into a 2.4:1 aspect ratio video. Utilizing every pixel of the sensor and thus maximizing image quality… Hope that made sense.
@raymondmenard54442 жыл бұрын
@@baqcasanke Ok i see, yes it does make sense, especially for anamorphic, it’s it the de squeezing that makes the recorded data have that particular aspect ratio (which i happen to love). Thank’s four your input man 🙂

@angryrabbitproductions16902 жыл бұрын
The squeeze is too little. Let me explain: I frequently shoot anamorphic, but deliver in 16:9… this means I’m cropping in and losing the black bars. In my experience, most lenses below 1.8x squeeze loose essentially all anamorphic characteristics once cropped in to 16:9. Sirui should have pushed the squeeze just a bit further. Also, shooting anything over wide open removes virtual all anamorphic flavor. Nice try Sirui, but for those who plan to shoot at anything other than wide open, or plan to crop in, this lens is a waste of money.
