I love this scene, I find it so beautifully done, yet incredibly sad all in one. You can tell how much he loves her, but he completely messed up. She explains everything so clearly and calmly. I love the music that plays, which is what helps make this scene just so beautifully done.

This scene broke my heart. Niao niao hearing from his mouth that he doesn’t regret his decision only made her realize that she needed to break off this engagement. General Ling thought he still would be able to explain his reasoning, but she wanted nothing to do with him anymore, he broke their trust, and most of, abandon her, the one that she thought loved and would never do that her. My heart broke with her.

It gives me a lot to think about. I feel like I get everything he did and why. But it also makes perfect sense to me that her heart would be unrepairable. It's not just the unfairness of all those times he treated her like she was unreasonable for not depending completely on him and sharing every last thing with him. It's hard to put it in words. I know she doesn't blame him for wanting revenge, and I, too, think it was his choice to want revenge. I also understand why he thought that if he killed Ling Yi with his own hands, all that would be left for him was just death. It's all very deep and Shakespearean and tragic etc. So, I'm sorry for him, and I wish they'd be together at least for his sake. But he made her love him and then he broke her heart, didn't he? So what's there to explain? It's not like she blames him for anything he did, but in the end he left her alone, she's in pain, and maybe the love she had for him is now broken too. Not to mention all the second identity stuff and how she probably wonders if the guy she loved ever even existed. P.S. I actually think he himself is not ready here to go back to her. She has lots of confusion on top of the heartbreak, it's probably hard for her, now, to tell who the person she loves was and which part was just something she assumed on false pretenses. But Buyi himself is not the same he was when they were still engaged. It must be a huge shock on his mind to have finally achieved the purpose he'd been living for these part 15 years (out of 21 of his whole life), not to mention revealing to the world the huge secret he'd been carrying all along. And he also killed the guy. I mean, yeah, he's probably killed thousands of people in battle, but this was the uncle who killed his father, whom he pretended to acknowledge as his own father for over a decade, and now he's plunged his sword into his throat. Doesn't that affect people? Bloody vengeance must take something out of you, especially after planning it for so long. So, I think Zisheng is not quite all right yet, and I don't see how they could just get back to where they were before as if nothing happened, right away. Even if they could, they both need to really want it, and frankly, except for this very measly attempt here in this scene, it seems to me Buyi doesn't even try to grovel and get her back (before several years).

@@pirimpallopirimpalli4932 Taking a break from each other helped them heal and understand what it takes to trust each other. Had he gotten married to her and then kill his aunts husband which he acknowledges as his father would have implicated his fiancée’s family. In respect he should’ve let her in on what he was about to do. On the other hand she too likes seeking revenge who knows what kind of trouble should would have created. 🤣🙈

@@annaangol1748 for sure. But it wasn't a given that she would change her mind in time. I think we all expect the couple to end up together, and we know that sometimes C-drama cheats us out of that, but in this case it would have made sense even if they hadn't. Unlike other stories, here the hamletic (very, very literally hamletic) dilemma was part of the story from before the beginning, it wasn't some trick concocted at the last minute to add drama. Ling Buyi was always going to have to choose between "to be or not to be" and it seems to me he had resigned himself to the fact that if he chose vengeance he would be giving up everything else, including his life. That is a choice that Shaoshang understood very clearly. In fact, she understood it so clearly that she was ready to go with him, if he'd let her. But he also chose not to let her. So, I see how that must have broken her trust in him. Also, I can't imagine how hard it would be to wonder how much of the guy's promises sounded fake in retrospect. I mean, even his proposal arrived out of the blue right after the pagoda incident. I'm still wondering if part of him meant to use the marriage to deal with *that* secret she knew. In any case, it was one instance when he saved her, yes, but in hindsight he was also one of the conspirators, so, pardon me for finding it a lot cheaper this way.

Eventhough she loved him so deeply but he betrayed her. She was always open and honest with him. And he didn't reciprocate that. Poor girl...

I agree with all of y'all analysis, just wanting to add that her last hope of hearing him say that he didn't regret hurting and using her, broke the camels back. She was listening w/the a last little bit of hope that he regretted abandoning her but she as "left" again. She most likely spent all this time reviewing their shared memories and how the actions he took may have seemed for her good but was to only to further his vengeance. And keep in mind that despite the interruptions to his potential confessions, ShaoShang repeatedly asked him he needed to tell her something, what was he hiding, etc. So in her opinion she gave him several chances to come clean with her.

it's only after rewatching the show that I really understood what he did wrong. at first, it doesn't come to you - Huo Buyi has always wanted revenge, he would have definitely wanted to kill Ling Yi himself. but he was always trying to gather proofs against him. his first choice was never to kill Ling Yi in the way he did, he wanted to bring him to justice. he wasn't blind in his hatred and actually wanted a life for himself past his revenge (pursuing Niao Niao proves that). it's only when Peng Kun was killed and then his aunt died in grievance that he finally snapped. he attacked and killed Ling Yi and was ready to die as Ling Buyi, his 'son', without even revealing his true identity to anyone, he didn't even really confirm the fact to Niao Niao he told her it didn't matter who he was because his love for her didn't change. judging from this, it seems Huo Buyi reached his breaking point. he said he had done everything, thought of every way, but he hadn't. his goal from day one had been to prove what Ling Yi did by collecting actual proofs but he deviated from that and rushed to get his revenge because (1) he was getting married soon and after that, Niao Niao and her family would be implicated had he taken revenge then, and (2) because he thought no one would believe who he really was (Huo, not a Ling) and that he had no way to prove that Ling Yi was a traitor. in both the cases, he was wrong. (1) the Cheng family broke the curfew to come to his rescue anyway and we're detained to house arrest after that until Huo Buyi was proven innocent, and (2) the Emperor knew how to recognise Zisheng because he had seen his birthmark when he was a baby + there were letters between Ling Yi and Peng Kun from the time of Gu City's invasion which Madam Chunyu, Ling Yi's wife, had hidden away. in the end, all Huo Buyi had to do was take a chance to tell both Shaoshang and the Emperor who he really was. it was Shaoshang who figured out Madam Chunyu's secret, so she would have done so anyway, and the Emperor would have 100% believed Zisheng with his birthmark. instead, he chose to carry all this grief and vengeance by himself and ended up breaking down under all the weight.

To add on to this, CSS also mentioned that she understood his reason, but the part she was most upset was that he never thought of her as his companion who would walkthrough thick and thin together. She told him at the cliff that she was willing to die together, risk her life to save him because like the Sun and the stars husband and wife are one body. It’s the same thing he told her when she decided to get revenge on the 5th princess herself, that the reason she didn’t tell anyone was because she viewed them as outsiders. Similarly here, he didn’t tell CSS no matter how many chances she gave him because he viewed her as an outsider in his own revenge matter. If I remember correctly, CSS told him many times she would support him and help him in his revenge and quest, but in the end he still betrayed her trust. CSS gave him so many chances, he abandoned her knowing that is what she hates the most as she was constantly being abandoned.

Finally someone said it ... You all are right ... I think the same .... If he trusted niao niao she'd have thought of a way to proper end ... Because they work the best a team . He'd have been saved when he killed ling yi he was less injured he could've fleed with her to the emperor and explain till shaoshang proves his innocence emperor would've kept him safe there but that other general brought Soldiers to kill him and zisheng decided to go out and was shot by arrow and injured that even niao niao runaway couple shot couldn't save them . Their 5 years could've been saved . And that bitch Lou wouldn't have thought that she had a chance.

I also think that he could've explained all this to the Emperor and Shaoshang before he killed Ling Yi because he admits later on that he regretted letting him die so easily. Ling Yi's death was satisfying for just a moment, but he was never brought to justice or shamed publicly while he was alive like he deserved to. if Zisheng still wanted to kill him with his own hands, the Emperor would have let him do so like he let He Zhaojun execute Prince Xiao.
