@CookingandFishing when you use the jerkbait for fluke, do you ever catch bluefish? I recently tried these methods and caught a ton of bluefish as well as fluke. Do the hooks you use stand up to the bluefish? If not, what hooks would you recommend. I was using a megabass vision 110. I kept the stock hooks since they held to smallmouth bass in freshwater. The bluefish destroyed them though...

Thanks for the video, very informative. Have you ever thrown bigger jerks like the kanata? I’m not sure if it’s the case with fluke but bigger baits usually produce bigger fish. Thanks
@CookingandFishing
@CookingandFishing Жыл бұрын
It's not really the case for jerkbaits - I've thrown the Kanata a bunch in freshwater and I've caught fish but not really any size. For me, the drawing power of a jerkbait is 90% its action - that sharp cutting darting action, and I can't make the Kanata do any of it...it's a sluggish "pull bait," it doesn't want to stop on a dime, maybe if I fished gizzard shad fisheries I would throw it more but my biggest JB smallies and largemouths come on 110 and smaller sizes, baits that I can work perfectly with M-ML gear. With fluke I've found exactly the same thing - the crisper, livelier the action, the bigger bites I can generate...with a jerkbait, anyway.

Hi, Roger! Thank you for such an informative content! Can you explain why the most of your fluke sessions with jerkbaits you are using spinning reel instead of baitcaster? Is there any significant pros or it's just the matter of preference?
@CookingandFishing
@CookingandFishing Жыл бұрын
On balance I probably end up using the baitcaster more for JB fluke, but out front...there are a couple reasons spinning gear gets the nod - more than half the cast is working the JB shallow, with upwards pops of the rod tip, and for that I find spinning gear gives me greater control over the action. The pointer 78DD which I prefer in the surf doesn't have a weight transfer, and with wind I find better casting distance with spinning gear. More chances of salt/sand spray out front and spinning reels are more forgiving to the odd grain of sand than baitcasting reels are. And finally my Steez 76MML AGS is just perfect for that Pointer 78 size jerkbaits, and it's fun to use.

Do you find any difference on using this technique in the spring vs summer? In other words are the fluke more receptive to this in the summer vs spring..etc?
@CookingandFishing
@CookingandFishing Жыл бұрын
Colder water = smaller strike zones, so you gotta get the bait within a foot or 2 of the bottom early season. Once the water is over 70F...they will come a long ways off the bottom to hit these jerkbaits - as long as you have the clarity.

Reading your water, it looks relatively deeper water until the lip. I’m guessing northern NJ. I fish Cape May county,(not spot burning) where the beaches are much shallower. Very hard to find those conditions out front that far south. Suggestions?
@CookingandFishing
@CookingandFishing Жыл бұрын
If you're looking to throw a jerkbait on the flatter southern beaches - try the regular Pointer 78, or any shallow diving jerkbait, and tune them to different float rates to find what works best for your depth/bottom contours. I've found that a slightly steeper diving angle + a slightly faster float rate = the most efficient way to cover the water column from land. From kayak/boat I would want a bait that suspends, since I'm working shallow to deep.

@@CookingandFishing Oh. After listening to another of your videos I had an "Ahh Hahh" moment. You don't want the jerkbait to float back to the surface too fast. You want to keep it in the strike zone longer. And you control that by changing out the hooks and the split rings?
@CookingandFishing
@CookingandFishing Жыл бұрын
@@tonygruber Pretty much, you can also add weight with little clips but you can only lighten a bait so much by downsizing rings/hooks. Each bait has to be tuned individually if you care about these details.

I am super glad to see you. And thank you for sharing your knowledge about flounder. Is it possible to catch winter flounder using lure? If so, can you do one video? I also recently just got into jerk bait. Bought Megabass ito 110 for $26 ended up having fish straight the hooks and broke the lip of the lure. If you have to change the hooks on Megabass 110, 110 SW, and 110 lbo sw, what hook size should you replace so that it can sustain on saltwater without having to kill the lure action?
@CookingandFishing
@CookingandFishing Жыл бұрын
Winter flounder is tough bc they have tiny mouths and they feed mostly on worms etc...I have caught them on gulp and keitech, but that's more of a "fluke" lol. On the Vision 110s you need to swap out all the trebles for Owner inline Singles - #1s, and #2 Decoy or Owner split rings. For what it's worth...I have over 25 110s and thankfully there are better jerkbaits for fluke, so I can save them for freshwater bass fishing.
@vsonic86
@vsonic86 Жыл бұрын
@@CookingandFishing you think there are better jerk than Megabass?
@CookingandFishing
@CookingandFishing Жыл бұрын
@@vsonic86 There are hundreds of different jerkbaits on the market, it depends on so many factors but in freshwater it can vary from lake to lake - at one of my reservoirs the smallies murder the 110 jr +1 early after ice out, then really prefer the Duo 120 later in the prespawn. For fluke I've found the LC 78 DD to be the perfect action and size for out front, and other baits like the Zipbaits Kaira 80 to do exceptionally well in deeper bayside water...when I want a 110 sized JB the Jackall Rerange and Duo 120 has killed it for me. The MB 110? Not so much. But if you already have a few change the hooks to the Owner #1 singles and throw them - they catch fluke for sure.
