My mom was about to turn 70, and was battling cancer. I wanted to make her birthday extra special, and emailed her favorite musicians and authors. Huey Lewis was the only one to respond, with a signed photo that said "You're still just a kid! Huey" I think it was her favorite thing. She passed in April, so it makes me smile that she got a sweet note from her guy before she passed. 💜

I worked with Huey Lewis at two shows. He and his band were the finest, most professional and respectful bunch I have ever known. He didn't deserve what happened to him, but he has remained upbeat and kind. I went to Tamalpais High, where the album cover for Fore was shot. Two of Huey's bandmates were seniors there when I was a freshman. My brother jammed with them. The best guys on the planet.

@@SuperMarioBrosIII I remember buying my first portable cassette player in the early 80s, I couldn't afford a real Walkman, so I think mine was made by GE or Akai, but it worked fine! I thought I was waaaay cool. I talked my boss into letting me listen to it when I worked overnight shifts testing the power supplies our company made for the Apple II computers. I was scared spitless working those late night shifts alone in an old creepy warehouse, so I figured if I got merked while blasting Tom Petty through my headphones, at least I'd die happy. Fortunately, I only worked those night shifts for a couple of months so we could keep up with demand for the product. When I hadn't been there long, my boss brought this guy in to check out the assembly line, and my test station which was the final stage before packaging. This guy was sloppy, chubby, had a beard with his lunch crumbs in it... kinda gross-looking dude. He started asking me questions, but I didn't want to interrupt the test so I held my palm up, as if to say "Talk to the hand", and never took my eyes off my monitor. Later I found out that the "sloppy guy" was Steve Wozniak, the "Mighty Woz". FML, I dissed the WOZ!! Fortunately for me, he was a cool guy and thought it was funny that I didn't know who he was, and he liked that I didn't let anyone interrupt me at my job.

However, shortly before that date, a few seats opened up behind the stage and I was able to get a few tickets so some friends and I got to go. It was only my second concert after joining the Air Force (third overall.) When he wasn't singing, he turned around and got all of us sitting behind the stage all riled up. One great time from way back... in the second half of the 1990s, I traveled a bit for work. One of the places I went fairly often was San Diego. We'd stay on Shelter Island in the hotel Humphrey's Half Moon Inn, which was right next door to an amphitheater. Most days, we'd get in from work, go out to the pool, have a few beers, and relax for a bit. When we were lucky, there'd be a band playing at the amphitheater next door. One night when we came in, we went out to the pool, and guess who was playing next door... Huey Lewis and the News. That was a pretty great night... great San Diego weather, sitting around a table with friends, having a few beers, and listening to Huey Lewis and the News live. Not surprised you both said this because Even as a Canadian I thought Loverboy was overrated even in our own country & how they broke through into the United States & sold as many records world wide baffles me to this day. Especially when we have imo much more talented Canadian acts like April Wine & Tragically Hip, Tom Cochrane etc who never got the air play nor the record sales that Loverboy got south of 49th parallel. One of life's cruel realities I guess. In fact Paul Dean the guitarist for Loverboy was in another Canadian band with Kenny Shields & Streetheart. Imo Streetheart was still the better band even after Paul Dean had left Streetheart to join Mike Reno to form Loverboy. Needless to say they (Loverboy) are not my cup of tea nor a favorite of mine. To each their own I guess.

I loved Huey Lewis and The News, they were really big during my high school years. One of the things I liked about that group is that unlike so many groups of that time, they were not boozing, drugging and bashing hotel rooms and thus their group didn't have the all too common melt down that so many groups of that time had. Huey was all business and approached the whole thing with a professional and serious attitude. God bless you Huey, you are the greatest!

I totally respect and love their music. I saw them in ‘84 and ‘85 in then-West Berlin, and in 2003 in Gulfport, MS. In 2003 they played and sounded as good as 20 years earlier and still gave it all they had onstage. So many of their songs are major parts of my high school and college soundtrack.

Awe man, I love Huey Lewis and The News! I know I talk about my late Brother on this channel a lot, but we both loved music. I remember his laughter watching Huey & The News video where they were singing do wap when the band was covered in sand and all you could see was their heads turning to Do Wap. 😂

You hit the nail on the head with the mystery of the unknown. I believe when radio was king, that's when music was it's best... in so many ways. It was our first introduction to a new song - sometimes before the album. MTV was a useful influencer also. There's something to be said for driving down the road with your favorite station blaring a new song - it's the WOW factor. None of that stuff is here anymore and I do sorely miss it.

Huey Lewis doesn't get the respect he deserves because he is in between several '80s genres. Not really new wave and edgy. Not hard rock. Not synth pop. Not trendy Top 40, like Madonna and MJ. Just cool, fun, good music. LOVE Huey Lewis and the News. Huey Lewis and the movie "Back to the Future" was peak '80s.
