For context: The forecast for this day was a little windy but seemed doable. My family was in town and they had never seen a base jump before, so they hiked out to the landing area to watch us jump. On the hike up, we were pretty sheltered from the winds but as we turned the final corner for our intended exit, we got hit with a nasty ~15mph wind. There was absolutely no way we would be able to safely jump that exit, so we relocated to a different exit. This exit was sheltered from the wind and allowed us to jump into calm air, however, we would still encounter the strong winds as we flew away from the mountain. I gave my family a call from the exit and they confirmed the winds in the landing area were still calm, even though the winds aloft were high. We all decided the jump was safe as we would be well clear of terrain by the time we would encounter the stronger winds. After watching the first two jumpers go, I was assured that it was safe, but I was definitely stressed knowing my family was watching. The jump went flawlessly, aside from my weird body position. I opened in clean air, flew past the spires, then felt some mild turbulence as I flew into the stronger winds. I crabbed sideways, accommodated for the wind drift, and made a perfect landing next to my mom and sister. People often comment that base jumpers probably have the most beautiful dreams of soaring through the sky. But the reality is, most base jumping dreams I have are nightmares when things go horribly wrong. This night, I had a dream that instead of encountering mild turbulence on the flight out, I flew into the worst turbulence of my life. In the dream, I was thrown into line twists. Every time I kicked out of it, my canopy would collapse and I would be thrown into more line twist. I dropped both toggles and had to fly the canopy using the rear risers. In the dream, I recovered at the last moment and made a safe landing, albeit not near my intended target. It's crazy what your mind can manifest. A large part of base jumping is maintaining a healthy balance of fear. Understanding the risks but putting your mind in a very focused state. But also, not letting it wander to the worst possible scenario where you become controlled by fear.

Are you concerned about your chute landing on cactus?

In my previous life as a cop, before I retired to be a teacher, I used to have terrible nightmares about the gun not working. Someone would be shooting at me or attacking me and my pistol just would not work. No matter what I did, it wouldn't fire. Those dreams were more common at the start of my career or after a stressful day. It's a common response to the brain processing short term memory into long term memory, deciding what it needs to hold onto in case it needs to survive a similar situation. The fact that you would imagine a worst case scenario in your dreams isn't unexpected, and although scary to you, your brain is trying to work through that situation to see what it would take for you to live.

Your mom's reaction was priceless. What a blessing to have someone who cares so much about you but can be happy for you and with you in a risky situation. I'm not sure my mom (who I do love dearly) would survive even watching me launch a paramotor :)

I know I've seen this one before, even the downwind landing and sis bump. Anyway, as vid topic, how about discussing (with action vid) your feelings (& that of others?) of the difference between PPG, PG, BASE, parachute jump, wing suit, bungee, etc. Pros/cons, why they are different/similar, participants, equipment, preparation, locations, etc. Nice vid! Like the multi-channel formats.

Great to see you having fun. Looks like a great flight. Out of curiosity, do parachutes come in hotter than paragliders (assume all the same conditions). I’m assuming/guessing so as paragliders typically have a larger surface area so the flare will have more drag ? Big assumption which is why I ask.

NUTS! When your up in your power glider you say keep your eye out for a smooth landing spot! Yet! All you see is sharp rocks up & down & droughts which you can’t see & slam you into the cliff walls with bad out comes! Broken bones, you name it plus miles from ICU? A good wake up call, is pay a visit to see an EMT unit! Roll your dice? 🤕

Compared to this basejumping, Paramotoring looks like a very, very safe sport. Tucker, what is the name of that square city a mile behind the landing area? Do you live there?🪂👍😊🇫🇷
