@@leavandenbosch9090 if you are saying wild birds shouldn’t be in a cage, I couldn’t agree more. That bird’s behavior is what his instincts tell him for survival. Since he must be in a cage, that one is huge and well supplied, etc.
@jmdenison

@@Serene3574 actually birds prefer a cage for sleeping. They like to snuggle up in their cage among their toys so they feel nice and safe. A lot of birds are actually crevass sleepers. I have one bird that doesn't like to use a cage but she's the oddball the rest of my seven rescues Love their cage and they're always on it and they really don't fly around the house that much even though the cage door is always open. I will also periodically offer them new cages to see if they'd like to trade out they're okay for a new cage and sometimes it works. One time I bought the super huge macaw cage 30x40 in for my Amazon and he refused it. Totally refused it. I think it was too big for him he likes something smaller. So it's not always true the bigger is better for birds. You just have to find the cage they like

Extremely educational and helpful. Much respect to Ane for getting Roman out of a bad situation, not abandoning him after her personal health battle, or the tragic loss of the Timneh. He knows that the birds can sense fear, same as with any animal really. When the human is fearful, the animal becomes fearful in response and often it leads to defensiveness and aggression. I do think though, Quakers hold grudges and he’s very upset over losing his bond with his owner. It will take time to earn both their trust in one another I think. What a tangled web sometimes us humans weave! 😂

What a great visual! These conversations could be happening with so many bird owners. They may all be different species but some behaviors translate across all. I really like this lady and her personality is exactly what her bird needs, someone who will figure it out and not give up! Just like the cancer and all the trouble that came with (or because of) it. You will have so many steps forward that the steps backwards will still be progress from the starting point. Best of luck! The progress report is anxiously being waited for.

I have made an observation, this bird is over the top fearful, it seems almost like he’s defending his life in his mind. my African Grey used to be like this, unfortunately when he was at my father’s (who had cancer, and passed away) he was having really lame wellbeing, he wasn’t having the proper care, and he seen his best buddy escalate in health, he seen some other harsh things in my home, he was in trauma. The first thing it reminded me, is when I just started his rehab process we used a towel too, Chako was being almost identical to Roman in behavior, I was of course scared of him because I knew he could slice a chicken bone in half, he was biting and territorial, and so scared! And of course he would be scared, and so of course he’d make his best effort to get the threat fearful of him. The change happened when I removed the towel. It was like in this video, when I offered the towel for him to step up, he’d go attack it, whenever I tried to loure him with the towel I’d actually accidentally loured him to attack the towel. I’d rather be hands off, than be hands on with a towel, because than you can build mutual trust and eventually introduce more hands on techniques (and I also don’t love being bitten through the towel 60 times per minute). I think targeting and stationing can be the best base tool for this mission. My bird is now being really well, he’s so gentle and not aggressive, he plays with toys and eats the best diet (natural, fresh wholesome and diverse), and he’s receptive to training, he’s receptive to touch (stepping up and petting on the head) and is willing to perch comfortably on my hand if he’s in the mood for it. he’s not an anxious bird anymore and it is really rewarding to observe his progress, really inspiring and insightful. I am certainly sure Roman is on the way to feeling well and in the road to success just like my sweet easy going Chako.

@@kiko7247 I wish them all the luck! the hardest part was letting all the fearful past experience heal, and let myself give in to mutual trust. Talking with my therapist or writing down the past experiences in a journaling notebook also been hecking helpful, it is hard to process this memories- it sounds harsh but it can be quite traumatic, and investing in therapeutic exercises in relation to this experience was a mundane miracle for me (a miracle that required a lot of work). I don’t know if I would’ve made it this far without the inner work because this process held a lot of emotional weight that needed to be healed.

This is nearly exact "issue" I have with my Grey. Our relationship was great the first month or so. We adopted him from poor conditions and took him for a vet check up. He had "stone" build up in his nos and the vet instructed me to inject water in his nose with a siringe...upside down (essentially water board him) to soften the stones for easier extraction. Understandably so, he doesn't trust me and bites the 💩 out of me. And only me. Although I give him all the food and handle him (with a towel) he still doesn't trust me, but will climb on my wife's hand, and anybody else without problem or aggression. He's still fond of me. Follows me, gives me his attention and it doesn't seem to be from fear, but we won't let me stratch his head for too long or climb onto my hand. Perhaps for time and patience to rebuild trust.

Hi! 😀I’m new to your channel! I came across your thumbnail and title and had to click! Very good training session! I raise puppies with dog therapy music and with training dogs, I’ve learned to do less excitement voice when rewarding a good behavior, as pups/dogs get too excited when they hear my excited tone of voice and body language. Dogs can sense fear and hear tone of voice with seeing human body language . I believe birds are intelligent and can probably see her body position and sense her fear. Bringing up the face and neck position elevates confidence I believe. Great video! Funny , upbeat , and I learned a lot in this video! Thank you for making this video! ❤

@shazhamilton5160 Agreed. Its known animals sometimes get frantic when a loved companion dies. Im a vet who works in rescue, and ive dealt with the aftermath of dogs found in houses where a human companion died. A dog wont eat you if you die. Some will, however frantically nip then bite your face and hands trying to wake you up. They know something is wrong and they want you to wake up. So they start by licking, then nipping, and then resort to repeatedly biting hard enough to tear skin up in their freak out panic of "why wont you wake up?!". Humans can actually do something similar too. Theres reports of people hitting and slapping a decedent screaming "wake up, dont die, wake up". Its possible something similar happened there. The other bird died and Roman tore it up in an attempt to wake it/absolute panic.

I found yall through Snake Dsicovey. I miss my Zebra FInch Rocky that I was given by friend after he lost his mate and he was a great great grandfather then. He lived a lot longer than we expected but the most suprising part was our parakeet Catbird who hated any cagemate she ever had, mourned him and sang his song after he was gone like she was tryna call him.

I know this may be 'out there', but is it possible he sensed how sick she was and mentally he couldn't handle it? Or he could smell the chemo, and it had some effect on him? I noticed when I was going through chemo, mosquitoes would hoover near me but NEVER bit me!😮

Maybe low head has multiple meanings. Certainly birds bow their heads for scratches. Interesting.

Loved this one !! I’m curious how random aggression is fixed I haven’t seen videos on how to combat that (by random I mean say a bird was comfortably sitting on shoulder then randomly ran to bit your beck) my bird has hung from my neck skin and I’ve been scared of him since I always wear hoods now to be safe but would love to be confident one day without them and on a seperate occasion he’s done this to my mum he willingly went in her but only to run and bite her neck and then I took him immediately off of her

time out/consistent expectations that it's not ok & punishment (in the form of time out) will follow, is what's worked for me. My wild cockatoos were randomly biting me when I hand fed them, I responded by saying "ouch" (cause it hurt & I couldn't help it) & then without any further interaction with them, I walked inside & ignored them for 5 minutes (while cleaning up the blood actually), then returned to give treats, IF they would behave & VERY quickly they all learnt biting is unacceptable at my home. No idea what they do at other people's homes, probably still bite I assume, but they fully understand it's not ok with me & don't even attempt it now. They still bite in settings such as if I'm training with one of them & then give another a treat, I get a gentle nip to tell me that no, I'm not allowed to do that, I'm supposed to be focused only on the cocky that's higher in the pecking order & that I was working with before the other cocky came over, but not random bites now, if they bite, it's very clear the reason behind it & very easy to avoid. I'm not sure how you do the time out/ignoring immediately when the bird's already on your shoulder, but if it wants to be on your shoulder, then it wants to be with you, so it will hate you leaving it for 5 minutes, so a time out should work really really well, if you apply it consistently (and can find a way to remove the bird from your shoulder so as to do the time out, without giving it attention while doing so)

Random aggression is often tied to hormones. It happens so often, that we actually produced a whole course on it... All about the birds and the bees... ;-) But seriously, it all starts with the foundations of Diet and Sleep, once you have that dialed in, we walk you through the rest. I'd recommend our beginner level course if you're looking into a more in depth solution to random aggression. It'll at least get you started: birdtricksstore.com/collections/top-8/products/the-basic-parrot-course-stop-biting Good luck! ~Dave

Agreed with everything Dave said above, hormone management/health/diet/ enrichment and wellbeing/adequate sleep are the first practical steps for building a strong healthy base for your bird to thrive (right now and in the future, even before starting to train and actively interacting with your bird, this can have an immense impact on your bird’s wellbeing and emotional state as well.) I’d like to talk about a quite taboo topic, emotions and traumatic events with a pet. :) It is quite traumtic isn’t it? When my African Grey was habitually aggressive I was so anxious and feeling so much guilt at the same time, because birds do not act like this normally, only when they’re habitually terrified to death (sometimes for no recognizable reason). Talking about it in therapy and journaling, trying to process the information that my brain couldn’t when this situations happened has been ever so effective. Recovering trust or trauma has been beneficial for being able to focus and plan out interactions in a trustful way. From there on - the way to heal the relationship was to build on mutual trust and clear common language and wellbeing with my bird, being willing to see him in a different light. It maintained a rehabilitating environment for my bird to shed his old aggressive habits and become his own mellow self (he’s a mallow, easy going., polite and rather patient, he’s now is lively and over all happy boy, and he earned all of my respect to him - he has done an excellent recovery. If someone told me I’d be able to describe him this way few years ago, I wouldn’t have believed them, but he really is a good boy.)
