This female blue and gold macaw named Rio was sold as a "two year old macaw"... when more research went into how many past homes she'd had, how she had been kept and for how long, as well as researching the type of leg band she had, we found out she was much older (20+ years likely older!) and kept almost exclusively as a breeder bird. Birds kept as breeders can have a much harder time converting to pets than birds who have always been kept as a pet but just had bad human experiences. There are always exceptions, of course, but most breeder birds have never had the benefit of a human-bird relationship and so have little interest in trying to bond with a human.

He has such a beautiful home! For humans and the bird. You can tell he really wants the best for her. I hope he keeps up the hard work. Breeder birds are so hard to retrain 😬

Haha hard work is an understatement. I have an ex breeder ( 15 years as a breeder) who is also a special needs and man oh man..although he is spoiled rotten, sometimes I sit back and wonder what I got myself into with him. But I am his forever home and he will never know what it's like to have his cage closed up, or to be outside in a breeding pen again.

@@blamekatie Thank you. He had a less than stellar life. When he was a hatchling he was "tossed" or fell out of his nesting box which severely broke his leg. It healed twisted so he walks like a "pimp" lol. He was at the breeding facility for over 15 years, but because he couldn't get anything chicks from him, he was eventually retired and sent to an actual Parrot rescue, where he sat for another four years. Parrot rescues are great however they are so overwhelmed with parrots and birds, that simple things such as toys and human contact is limited. So he sat in a noisy room full of cockatoos with no human contact and no toys. Those that were interested, would put the effort in to gain his trust, and then abandon him because he wasn't "pretty" and because he was a special need. So when I was told about him, it was very unexpected and drove almost 2 hours to go visit him. I sat with him for the entire day and just kinda hung out. I saw something in Nemo that other people didn't. I knew it was hard enough for normal birds to get adopted, but a special needs breeder? What chance did he honestly have? So I took the plunge. Twice a week for about one and a half months, I drove 2 hours there and home to go visit him. He's really a goofball, even though he won't let me touch him at all, but with so many people failing him, i can understand why its difficult to get his trust. I had to teach him how to play with toys and now his cage is full of them. His cage is never locked up. I fought for him by having in house inspections and post-screenings, because nobody else ever fought for him. Now he is happy, he has a huge cage in my bedroom where i spend most of my time doing college things. And he is never home alone, even if im not there. Because he has to have his wings clipped ( medical reasons) we take him to the park where he loves to watch the little kids play and talk to him, stretch himself in the sun..so yes..he definitely has a good life now.. even though I can pet or touch him much LOL.

And possibly her mate? I know it's a necessary separation in order to for the bird move on to much better situation with health and the hopeful possibility that they will bond with human, but it's also heart wrenching to think about what they go through missing their loved one; if they were in fact bonded to the bird they were put together to "make the babies":I know it's not always the case,bc they may not even click.

It's most interesting to hear the "behind-the-scenes" dialogue where you are discussing the possible causes and nature of her behaviour and clearly demonstrating your own very sensible caution around this beautiful bird. Like others below, I would LOVE to see a follow up video or even some more content from that day.

What amazed me was the fact that when you switched target sticks...not only did the bird go from aggressive to accepting, it was moving in a way to show that you could trust her as well. She was making slow and predictable moments. That whole exchange just after the stick switch was amazing to watch.

Rio is a gorgeous full size female B&G with perfect feathering and long tail with no damage. She's very well taken care of and preens herself beautifully. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! I went and read Rio's bio that you posted and her leg band should have a serial number on it, as all breeder's are required to band every bird born in their aviary in most States. These are also recorded and submitted to the local health department or State wildlife association that most States require be registered and pay a county tax, ($10) year, so they know how many wild bird's are being bred in captivity. This should give her age and breeder information. There's no way I would have believed she was 2 year's old as many B&G's under 3 still have baby bird mannerisms for the majority of their interactions with other's. I don't know why I'm even typing this since you've been doing this forever and know this stuff. The band on her leg is what made me think of it since my B&G was banded from her Florida breeder, all the birds were, and documented with the county even coming out and doing inspections to ensure the bird's were well cared for and the aviary was hygienic. This gentleman had several mated bird's listed as on the extinct list & would take in rescues for rehabilitation & worked with the Govt on maintaining population of exotic birds, especially one's that were listed as critical in nature. I'm sure most of the breeder's that do leg band's are also required to maintain records on their bird's.

Thank you for sharing this video. Jamieleigh, your calm, soft voice and demeanor and slow approach without pushing the issue is why the bird was more receptive to you. Dave, why did you leave your cap on? Your presence was intimidating and assertive, and the cap just intensified her fears. Hopefully he will not feed the bird the egg diet too often. It's not a good idea to feed egg and soft foods to a hormonal parrot, which can exacerbate hormonal surges. It's nice to know that the bird is given a chance for a quality of life.

I found making a strong chammomile water for his water bowl and bathing time works in 2-3 days to relax him to be a more calm, stable companion. I have a breeder male African grey who is 20 years of age, who was a breeder for 15 years and stuck at a sanctuary for almost 4 years before adopting him. And although he isn't cuddly, or allows us to touch him ( without screaming and growling and flopping around, never really bites) he really isn't aggressive at all and is the sweetest boy and I provide him such a good life. He never even knew how to play with toys until I showed him how, and now he gets a lot of toys, and a warm place to sleep and a lot of attention. When breeder birds do go to parrot rescues ( certified ones) such as the one i went through, there is a huge process involved to make sure the house is the right place for any bird. I went through in-home inspections, and two months of visitations twice a week to spend time with my Grey where i just sat with him and talked for hours. I even had to do post screenings with the parrot rescue to ensure he was being cared for.

My Blue and Gold Tico was a breeder bird but he failed at it. The breeder human said he didn't take to the female (all while stroking him down the back). After a few days we realized he was extremely hormonal with me, in particular. We've had him about six weeks now and while his behaviors have calmed down quite a bit, he's now more comfortable straying away from his cage and has started trying to nest under his cage, under our bed and has built nests out of our clothes on the ground. I feel bad for him and I feel like I can't spend time with my bird without triggering him.

In the case of a bird who is this hormonal and who is probably grieving for all the lost babies, would spaying her or letting her breed be of any help at all? Looking forward to more! Thank you!

Hi there I was looking for the link to the vlog or blog or whatever on how to safely keep a parrot with other animals. I'm probably a bone head but I don't see it listed here.

I was looking too. Since I lost my bird in a messy divorce a few years ago I've acquired 2 cats (or they acquired me lol) and I've been afraid to get another parrot. My cats will sit and watch birds out the window for hours and I'm so scared of the idea but I would love to have another bird one day.

@@mattkinsella9856 if the cats are already grown, and have the instinct to hunt birds, it's probably a bad combo. at best they'll be tense and uncomfortable around each other... at worst, serious injuries or death, and not just to the bird either; even a small bird could do serious injuries to a cat if it was fighting for its life. unless you've got a house where birds and cats could be totally separate at all times, it seems to me that with adult cats, its simply asking for trouble. and even if you do have a house you could separate them, that seems like an awkward limit to both pets.

@@tzxazrael That's what I was thinking. My old parrot was out of the cage most of the day and would sit with me while I work. I wouldn't want to keep a bird caged all the time because I'm worried about the cats. I've thought about building an aviary in my garden which might work.

@@mattkinsella9856 I have a cockatiel and a cat that share a room. The cockatiel has picked the cat for his bonded pair. Its really all about a calm and controlled environment. I had to use a spray bottle no more than 3 times when my cat got "in the zone"

This is my experience with the sanctuary I worked at for four years. I suspect many of the issues here are similar and can be avoided…. So many people do things for birds that really arent good in the long run with the best intentions…. I stopped working because I honestly got to the point of having nightmares aboit being attacked. People loved giving them cardboard boxes and it would set birds in this hormonal spiral…. Same with fruit in the diet and the use of noodles to absorb excess liquid in the chop….

I don't even have a bird and I like watching their videos. I have no idea how complicated birds can be although they certainly seem to be worth it. It takes a special person to put forth the effort. I was in someone's house the other day and they had a cockatoo the was bobbing up and down and pulling its feathers out. The owners said it was ok but after watching these videos I know that that bird is in distress and it makes me sad now.

Our Green Wing is a rescue....not from a really bad situation like this video, just people that didn't know how to take care of a parrot. They feed him terrible people food like yogurt and peanut butter even pizza. He's first ten years we don't know much about, but we do know the original owner died and then he got treated badly and locked in a small cage by the other family members because they didn't understand parrots.....and he's quite big and scary..lol. The boy that had him for the second 10yrs since he(the boy) was 8 was way too cuddly with him and touch him in all the wrong places and he(GW) had too many nesting triggers around. He would regurgitate whenever he got excited all the time....really gross. He also had terrible diarrhea from his diet. We immediately took him to the best local aviary vet had lots of tests done and surprisingly he was in good health just very malnourished. We have worked 3yrs with him now to correct all the problems and he is thriving and is very healthy and has very few hormonal problems now. It's soo tough working with a big bird like that and there's no easy quick fix, but you gotta just work thru each issue as they come up and never give up. Our GreenWing still has "days" (don't we all) but he is soo worth it as a part of the family now. I intently watched this video and saw many of the signs we saw in our GW, not as bad obviously as a breeder bird and I feel for the guy....but there always hope. Ours is not the "perfect" macaw.....there's no perfect macaw....they are big and proud and mischievous and live on their own terms. But, he is well behaved(mostly lol), happy, healthy, and a solid individual in our family.....its taken 3 long hard years but worth every day because these birds are so incredibly smart and wonderful to share life with. He never bonded to me, we have an understanding tho, I'm the one he wants to "play" fight with alot😉...he bonded to my daughter but he gets along with everybody and knows his place and what's expected of him and I think he is really fine with that. The long and short of it is, a rescue parrot in many ways forces you to learn much more about these incredible creatures, and lets you really appreciate the small gains on a daily basis with them. 3yrs may sound like a long time but its not in the life of a bird that lives 80+years. Don't be afraid to rescue a bird, just don't set your goals to high to fast. We are around our GW everyday having a home based business so in reality that 3yrs is more like 6yrs for people with out of the home jobs just for a reality check. I really enjoyed this video, thank you for showing the difficult side of owning parrots.....its not all fluff and fun times with these guys.....but it is worth it when they become a real family member after lots of hard work and dedicated time to figuring them out on an individual level.

I have an Australian Rosella that we caught outside. She is very aggressive and hates to be handled which makes replacing perches or swapping toys difficult not to mention trimming her nails. She likes to interact from in the cage and ducks her beak asking for treats. Loves her apple carrot and occasional dog food nuggets. I would so love to tame her and interact with her more. Any suggestions? Her name is Skittles.

Friends of mine adopted a dog that had spent most of its life as a breeder dog in a kennel, not at all the same, I know but there are s o m e similarities. Nobody had made an effort to create a personal bond with the dog, it was just seen as a producer (and this was not at all a puppy mill). It did not end well and my friends were not new to keeping a dog.

Yeah, it can take years of work with dogs like that & even then you don't end up with a typical dog at the end. I've had one like that for the past 10 years and it's only the past few years that he's started to act more like a "normal" dog. It is a lot of work, I found a lot of techniques Bird Tricks use to grain trust & communicate with parrots translate very well to dogs, it's why I started watching them.
