It reminds me of the scammers back in the day when you couldn't self publish and these companies said "We'll publish your book, it only costs you thousand of Euros". And all they did was print your book and you were left with stacks of books that you could nowhere sell.
@montananerd8244Ай бұрын
That is not really a scam, imo, I mean, certainly people were misled, but they also had to really work hard to be scammed. Part of the deal with self-publishing, which is also what having your book printed is called, is that you have to sell the books yourself. It’s not the most up-front thing but aspiring authors have made themselves incredibly scammable. It’s got to be intentional by now, no other group of artists is so delusional as unpublished authors who won’t believe that their work…needs work! I knew about these self publishing deals as an 80s kid. People *pretend* to be scammed, but many just couldn’t sell their books. Mostly, just don’t be dumb. It’s incredibly hard to sell a book and profit from it, period. Anyone who goes in with full confidence deserves what they get lol!
@TheRonnieajАй бұрын
@@montananerd8244 I don’t think that’s really fair to authors. Vanity presses these days promise to do all of the things that a traditional publishing house does: create professional book covers, assign you an actual editor, provide you with an ISBN number, work to get your physical book into stores (which is miserable as an author to do), etc. And they’re ultimately no better than these 1980s scammers who print tons of copies and leave you holding the bag. Who substitute genuine editing for running a spellcheck over your book. For slapping a single stock photo on some script that’s not even edited instead of doing an actual, genuine cover. A lot of self published authors are willing to put a lot of time, and not an significant amount of money, into their books. The scammers have certainly gotten more creative.

I agree. Especially if all that person does is review books. Because her viewers probably aren't interested in buying every single book she reviews. I think it's a smarter idea to find someone in their genre and ask them to read/promote their book. For someone in the fantasy genre, asking someone who makes DND, Lord of the Rings, or Game of Thrones content. Those viewers are WAY more likely to engage with a one time recommendation than someone who is constantly talking about books for a living (in my opinion).

Also, her prices are way off. A beta read would take perhaps 6-8 hours of reading and 1-2 hours of filming/preparing the information into content. Even at the max of that end, that’s $130/hr. It sickens me that newer authors and indie authors are being taken advantage of. Not only authors but budding artists or new entrepreneurs trying to start a business. How did we get here? How did we become this society where "influencers" expect free stuff. Authors, please use an arc team. Stop paying these creeps for reviews. Trust the real book nerds to gives reviews your hard work if they like it.

can you please give me the name of the author that animates scenes from her books? I didn’t find her in the links in the bio

@@meshmesh5675 oh thank you! I totally forgot to add her! Here's her page! Her name is Shiloh Briar. www.tiktok.com/@shiloh.briar?_t=8pPZkrl3KNK&_r=1

The thing is, if she was trying to be genuinely helpful, she would let people know in advance of delays and anything that would make her unable to complete her end of the deal. And if stuff came up suddenly she would be easily reachable and give refunds when asked!

Always have them sign a contract or "influencer agreement" with form deliverables and dates

It’s unethical to accept money for a review without telling the audience. Basically it’s a commercial.

I am so upset she would be doing this. Imagine being paid to read and you do this.
@caustic1611Ай бұрын
Did she disclose that she was being paid to promote these books? Because if not, I'm not sure that's legally ok. Offering to leave PAID Goodreads reviews is also a big no.

That girl's got more trials, tribulations, and afflictions than a Victorian heroine. It's a miracle she's got the time and energy to put on her makeup. How dare all these mean authors demand she keep her word??? 🤪🤪🤪🤪 Adding to say, supposing all this poor-me is true, she shouldn't commit to contracts she can't fulfill.

While i wouldn't pay them either I'd trust the other book tokers she mentioned in her video that supposedly charge more to live up to their end of the bargin.

So many medical career people in booktok lol. Just something I noticed. They don’t even wait to get home to make these videos about the drama!

Completely off topic but the guy in the blue hat could be an amazing ventriloquist! I’ve never seen anyone speak so clearly while moving their mouth so little. Very impressive!

I don't even understand. All she have to do was make a video and yet the girl couldn't even do that. She was already in a scandal, with the whole Wishlist thing. You would think she was going to chill out then. What make she think these authors wouldn't called her out?! It people money and time. Truly mindblown tbh
@Hexmari11 күн бұрын
Notice how she’s preying on older authors who might not have a social media presence. It so embarrassing to claim to be someone who reads when you can’t even read books you’ve been paid hundreds of dollars to read…

Oh no 😢 This is so sad! I’m an indie writer and I also have a KZbin channel about books, and I learned long ago that you need to stay clear from ANYONE, no matter how big they are, who asks you to pay them-whether that’s on Tik Tok, IG, KZbin, Facebook, etc. to review your books on their platforms. It’s way better (albeit a longer and often harder journey) to have organic promotion from someone that saw your book out in the wild (however that may be), and shouts it out for free. I know it’s tempting, but everyone, please do not pay people to promote your art. Ads and promo sites are different and those can definitely work in your favor (I do both things) but it can get very red flaggy and even scary when you someone reaches out to you and asks for money, or you reach out and say you’ll pay them. It’s really tough out in the indie market right now, but please don’t panic and think you cannot be successful without influencers. You absolutely can and there are SO many indie authors rocking it without paying influencers to promote their books. You got this, y’all ❤

This is really a perfect example that not everyone who has a following is trustworthy or deserves it. Im so confused by this too... she's getting payed by the author but she would stand to make more actually posting the videos like she agreed to. She makes money off her content and without those authors there is no content.

its overcharging because she isnt doing what she promised. thats the issue. the issue is not the money. the issue is her not doing the thing she is reaching out to people about. yk the very thing she introduces herself with...

what did the ex have to do with book reviews? it felt like a little blackmaily in some way?
@calinac1671Ай бұрын
its like common practice to not use the deposit till the service has fulfilled. so that way, you can refund them with ease in case something comes up preventing you from fulfilling your promise. so like.. dont spend what you dont have. that just common sense like there are laws that landlords cannot spend deposits that their tenants give them for a reason.

Are you saying that you send your product to some unknown person without a lawyer or legal binding contract-its old school but so what be old school and protect your product-- if it were this easy to get a book or video published, there'd be lots of new and great nooks out there, which there are not. Why do you trust "your creators." I cant believe you dont get out there yourself and cìrculate and promote without these internet criminals. It is criminal, do you know that? A real life attorney and/or editor would never let you send your idea to a Callie. It is illegal. New authors are such easy prey. You dont even know how many people are playing the part of this Callie. Take yourself out of this internet group, its completely criminal, and they know it. Youre being taken for a ride. One of these days, youll be served to appear at court in a lawsuit involving callie(s). When will you learn.
