Daymond's initial offer was of 150K 20%, they closed the deal at 17.5% + 10% royalty until he gets 150K back. If they hadn't insisted on Troy joining they could have made the same deal without the royalty. Heck they could have done 150K for 15%

They didn't give up the equity for free. The 150k where the royalty returns his money is just a way to get the $150,000 now rather than later, and to let Damond in on the business, someone who will presumably make the business far more successful, making more profit come in, so then after he gets that 150k back, the guys will go on to make way more money then they would have made on their own. There's is a strategy to all of this.
