It seems like every few years the news cycle explodes with another new giant theropod set on dethroning Tyrannosaurus. The 90s were full of giant carcharodontosaurid hype and the early 2000s had Spinosaurus as their sweetheart. In 2024, Tyrannosaurus appears to be the reigning champion with its biggest representatives at 10-12 tonnes--but a new challenger approaches, this time from the Early Cretaceous of Brazil. Will the tyrant lizard king’s claim to the throne last?

A few ways to explain away the size of the centra is A) That it belonged to a Sauropod B) That the animal it belonged to had fewer tail vertebrae than other carcharodontosaurs, making each one longer on average to increase rigidity and balance C) That the fragmentary nature of it indicates it could be misidentified as a middle caudal centra and instead be one closer to the hips and therefore longer. 16.8 meters does sound pretty outrageous and unlikely. Though isolated elements have broadened our understanding of what was possible in species size before, such as the big old Temnodontosaur bones that put the 10 meter size into question. Sometimes though, there are just too many unknowns, this case seems to be one of those.

Yeah, and as I mentioned you can scale it to as low as 12-13 tonnes using animals like Neovenator. I haven't experimented with megaraptoran scaling but I'm sure that gets lower results as well. I personally strongly doubt the higher estimates

Ah, yes! Another contender for the "Overhyped biggest theropod who turns out a lot smaller in real-life" awards. Spinosaurus was hyped as the T-Rex killer in JP3, then turned out to be Crocoduck a couple of decades later. Giganotosaurus was hyped to be double the size if T-Rex in the Ark games, just for it to be discovered that T-Rex is bulkier/heavier than it.

Le premier spécimen de Giganotosaurus mesure 12,8 mètres, il a surpassé tous les Tyrannosaures, c'est-à-dire que le premier spécimen de Giganotosaurus n'est pas encore le plus grand, le deuxième spécimen de Giganotosaurus est plus grand que le premier, avec 13,2 ou 13,6 mètres de long, et certains estiment le la seconde mesurait 14 mètres de long. Caudal vertebrae is 45% longer than Acrocanthosaurus, so extrapolate to say that the entire theropod is 45% longer than acrocanthosaurus. Then by square cubed law, a 45% increase in length yields a 200% increase in volume, and since density is basically the same for all animals, 200% increase in mass. Acrocathosaurus is thought to be around 6 tons, so a 200% increase would be roughly 18 tons. The obvious problem is assuming that this new theropod and acrocanthosaurs have the same dimensions. There is no reason to believe this given the fact that we only have a caudal vertebrae and we aren't even sure if we have a carcharodontosaurid. But it's not an idiotic estimate, its pretty reasonable given our lack of information currently.

1.Basically I am not convinced by the estimate that based on fragmentary material. Although if said creature was really a Carcharodontosaurid,I would like to name the species after Incan deities. T.Rex size is a bit of myth at this point, and I explain why. We have arround 35 well preserved adult T.Rex specimens, and the average weight is arround or even less than 6000kg. Why we are constantly using the 3-4 biggest ones (which are clearly massive comparing to the norm) to compare with other megaterophods? Does it make any sense? Yes, some of them were build like tanks, but the average T.Rex was not that big or bulky. If we take a common sized individual arround 11.5 metres and 6000 kilograms and we compare it with Giganotosaurus, which in my opinion should be considered as the biggest terophod known for now, we see that this one is only represented by one quite well preserved especimen, and a very fragmentary second one. Just taking into consideration the holotype, we have a ~12.4 metres carcharodontosaurid, at 7000+ kilograms. Probability says that most of the individuals of a given species are way closer to the average size than extreme sizes, so we can asume that size as normal for now, specially when the second individual could be 3-8% bigger. In biology you take the average size to determinate which animal is bigger. If we got 35 adult gigas, or Carchas, ot any other megaterophod is very likely some of them would reach really huge sizes...

Sad to see tons of fossils away from the Home Country... Like, this is one has been away and locked in a drawer forn 164 YEARS. The first ornithischian described in Brazil (or in South America) has been locked away for 118 Y E A R S. Ubirajara was just a start, and I wish that all of these fossils and historical artifacts (from Brazil or not) return home.

It’s probably fake because every time they find a Theropod they always say that oh it’s regarding T-Rex, but it turns out it’s not like for example, a couple of years ago someone found an Australian therapod, and they said that it was bigger than T-Rex, but it turns out it’s not Tyrannosaurus rex was built different other theropods may be in carchodontosaurids maybe longer or maybe taller, but not weight I also don’t think that we will never ever find a Theropod. That’s sauropod level territory because I bet they have a limit the laws of physics that’s all

Well. Literally any dinosaur we found is average - juvenile sized. You know bulls (largest recorded specimens) could be 2x large as average adults. But they extremely rare to find. Its normal if a theropod becomes over 20 tons and i wont be so excited. Megalodon thought to be 60 tons but now 156 tons and its eats anything its wants. So theres no clear limit of their size. we didnt discovered millions of their specimens. We only found few specimens and calling it too large for a theropod. But not.

Does anyone else just find it odd that the largest terrestrial predator by weight ever discovered also happened to be one of the first named dinosaurs? I would think we would find more of other dinosaurs later

20 tons is almost certainly excessive, I imagine we’ll see the size estimates decrease over time as more material is found and described and more paleontologists weigh in. Still even with these excessive estimates this animal was definitely huge so it’d be exciting to see more information coming out.

This might be controversial, but the reason why we now think Tyrannosaurus is the heaviest is probably due to the fact that it has more numerous and more intact remains, and are better understood.
