@@Splode_ I love Casio watches too. My favourite are any metal variations of the classic F-91W (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casio_F-91W). Those things are bullet proof. The only problem I have is that mine is a bit scratched up from all the times I have worn it doing DIY. I was praising Casio to the skies with a Japanese bloke I work with and he GAVE me his old one (in mint condition). I wear the good one for special occasions. I was trying to find a video on how they manufacture the metal straps. They are indestructible.

Andy, in case you don't know, there are two types of grease injection needles. A Bearing Grease Injector Needle for injecting grease past seals or into CV Joint Boots, and a Grease Nozzle with a rubber tip to direct grease into crevices. Both would get some grease through the crevice onto the nearest bearings. Auto parts stores have them. I use the needle more. Works with a regular grease gun, so you'd have to dedicate a gun, or syringe which could take a Zerk fitting, to Phil's Grease, which wouldn't be different from your syringe. Great videos, and very much like your Regular Bikes for Regular People vibe. Hope all is well,

Thanks for the excellent content. I have fixed-up a few 90's Bridgestones that were neglected and got a second life. A CB-1 that I put a tall stem and comfy seat and traded to a friend for a couple of Phish tickets, A RB-1 that I turned into a "street-fighter" commuter, and a MB-3 that I put drop bars on and commute with in the winter. Great frames! I think that the NB-26 was the last generation of the CB (city bike). 1993. And NB allegedly stood for "no brainer".

I’ve got some new bikes BUT I still have my 1988 Bridgestone MB-3 mountain bike that I bought new back in the day. Mostly doing commuter duty now, but it’s a JOY to ride. Easy to work on too. Also, if you’re looking for grease syringes, Radar Laboratories makes the LoobToob with different tips. Highly recommend!

Since you mentioned that the bike was left outside i would take that rear derailer and soak overnight in distilled vinegar then lube it and try again. Its worked for me before.

I can relate to your pragmatic approach to getting bikes back on the road, and the folly in trying to restore old bikes for an actual profit. My last $100 bike (97 Gary Fisher HKEK) took about $300 to spiff up, not to mention about 6 hours of labor. I'm counting new bars, pedals, pads, stem, grips, cables, housings, tires, full hub service, seatpost polishing, etc, etc. I swapped the 8 speed rear end for a 9 speed cassette, derailleur, and chain from the parts bin I didn't count. At the end I could probably sell it for a good $200, but the real point was to get a great around town comfort bike full of nostalgia. I'm impressed you manage to make any money, and applaud your restraint.

I’ve bought, sold and given away four Bridgestones over the years. All were great bikes. I still have a MB-1 that I converted into a drop-bar “gravelish” bike. Until now I had never heard of this particular model, so thanks for expanding my knowledge. Park Tool makes a nice one-hand grease gun that would out-perform your syringe. Can’t remember what it cost me, but I’ve been using it for a few years. Keep up the good work!

Wow...Bridgestone! I had my first "built bike" made in 1975 in Boulder, CO. I was 18 years old at the time (really? yoikes!) I bought the frame in Denver and built it in Boulder with 100% Campagnolo parts. What a great bike. I still owned it (and the four other bikes I'd bought since then) when I lived in Paradise, CA. Welp, the entire town burned down in 12 hours (intense that was...just running through the fire with literally just the shirts on our backs). The bottom line = that bike (and everything else) burned up. Shame that...

I know you dislike store brands, but I bought one in 1972 (from Canadian Tire) that was secretely a Bridgestone, with SunTour slant pantograph (but not index shifting). Loved it but lost custody of it when my ex gave it away. Recently, I needed a beater bike and I bought one, also from Canadian Tire. It is a hard-tail that gets me from A to B. Don't know if I'm a curmudgeon or just a rider by your criteria. I discovered that I could get to my appointments from home quicker on my beater bike from home than walking from my office.

@bikefarmer. Your videos are fantastic. I used to be a fan of @BikeMan4u. He used to do livestreams as well on Saturday's where he showed all the customers coming in for tune-ups. I used to love them. I would get my bike stand out and tune-up all my daughter's bikes at the same time. (addendum: I like that compressor which is plumbed into the wall. Cool. 🙂)

NB stands for New Bike. NB 26 was introduced into the Bridgestone Line up mid-season back in 93. You won't find this in their catalogue. It was an entry-level comfort bike.

Andy, can you show us how to check out the drivetrain and determine when to change chain, sprocket and crankset? I have a 15 yo commuter with about 40,000 km, new chain and sprocket but can't tell if I need to change the chainrings.

I get a lot of junkers, mostly street discards. I have rebuilt so many hubs, front and rear. Total tear down, clean and buff everything on the wire wheel. You do all that and get it adjusted right with a throughly cleaned wheel you feel pretty good.

I could have used a dork disk twice in the last month. My brand new super fancy electronic rear derailleur did not have the limit screws set properly by the manufacturer, the first steep uphill ofc had the chain fall off violently on the inside. Lots of nasty sounds and a scratched hub. A few weeks later I had a small crash and slightly bent the hanger, next uphill led to more nasty sounds and more scratches.

I once had my chain go over the rear sprocket into the spokes. I was peddling hard going up hill and the chain made a big mess and broke a few spokes. I had a long long walk home with my head down to think about things.... I'll still never use a dork disk but a shirt would make me feel better!

I had that issue with old paint in the top of the stand, too. Just cutted a paper box to separate the stand from the the cables and other parts of the bike and paint with black spray. Easier and faster than pull all the things off. Just the way we like it.

Saw a video of someone proposing not to use normal furniture polish but wax polish, because the normal funtiture polish contains Silicone, which dosen't work as good as wax on wood and it is hard to get rid of later.

You'd be surprised how much difference a suspension fork can make. And unfortunately, this bike seems like it has a 22mm threaded headset which basically means you can't get a decent suspension fork unless it's a really old one (and really freaking hard to find in decent/serviceable conditions).

I do not think most people need a suspension fork. Usually suspension means loosing watts that could have been speed. Wider tires are often better than suspension.

I don't understand the hate for dork disks. "If you regularly inspect and maintain your bike you'll never need it" - Ok sure, but surely having it as a backup just in case is reassuring? If you never crash your car you don't need airbags, but I'm sure glad I've got them. And that's ignoring the fact that the vast majority of bike riders are not inspecting and maintaining their own bikes - which is not even necessarily a bad thing, more people on bikes is good. We don't expect all car drivers to be auto mechanics, why should all bike riders be bike mechanics?

At least from what I understand on the matter, from related channels like Berm Peak(formerly Seth’s Bike Hacks), “dork discs” get the heat that they do not due to their functionality (or lack thereof), but for what they represent re: the bike industry’s direction over the decades. Like it got pointed out, if that rear derailleur has been correctly set up and a bike’s owner is performing good preventative maintenance, then you’ll never need it, if at all. But ever since bikes went to the department store model (and later, the direct-to-consumer model), a lot of the necessary knowledge to prep and maintain a bike has gotten “lost” and consumers think (and treat) bicycles as more disposable/unable to be repaired than they actually are. Case in point - rear derailleurs. Far easier to just slap a dork disc on instead of getting a consumer to sit down and properly adjust that derailleur itself

@@itsacorporatething I gave genuine, real world advice, from myself who has cycled for 50 years, which I learned from my grandfather, who was a railway engineer & cyclist, on how best to maintain bicycle drivetrains. They will last for tens of thousands of miles if well lubricated/cleaned, because the chain & sprockets wear together. Chain stretch devices do not give meaningful info & are just an excuse to sell more chains that do not need replacing. Also, cheap high viscosity motor oil is as good a chain lubricant as anything else, & better than most, especially if you ride in bad weather a lot. This is an absolute truth, but this truth did not suit his agenda so my comments were deleted, & I unsubscribed.

I think those Dork disks seem to be the part on the bike that seems to get blasted by the UV. The plastic turns yellow and cracks.
