Hard to say. There are four “continuities” in the Japanese films and this one set such a high bar very late in the game. But a good order so it makes sense: (Classic) Godzilla (1954) Godzilla vs King Kong (1962) Mothra vs Godzilla (1964) Ghidorah Three Headed Monster (1964) (American) Godzilla (2014) Godzilla King of the Monsters (2019) Godzilla vs Kong (2021) Shin Godzilla.

The only films that come close to the same caliber quality as Godzilla Minus One are: - Godzilla (1954) - Shin Godzilla - Godzilla (2014) - Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla (direct sequel to the original 1954, and it ignores all other Godzilla movies exist) - Godzilla: Tokyo SOS (not as good as the G Against MechaG, but one of the few with a direct sequel so you gotta finish the story) I've been watching Godzilla movies since I was 7, and only a couple have continuity. And most times, when there IS continuity, it's in a movie that probably should be skipped anyway (Ex: Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla). So the order doesn't matter.

Godzilla has always had 'Atomic Breath', but this movie took it a little further than the rest by turning it from more of a radioactive fire breath to a literal atomic beam that makes an atomic blast when it hits. Definitely one of the more overpowered versions of the atomic breath.

There's nothing radioactive "fire" about it except for the explosion triggered by his atomic heat ray. Hell, even the subtitles in film describes it as such! Now if you mean something much more akin to actual fire breathing that would be the second phase of Shin Godzilla's breath attack where he first belches out a heavy, thick black cloud of smoke that spreads far but low to the ground. Shorty after, as the smoke continues being exhaled in massive volumes from his mouth it ignites and becomes literal fire breath like that of a classic fairytale dragon. In its third phase the breath becomes what can only assume as superheated becoming in essence a plasma beam.

I'm glad you noticed that this movie was about humanity more than godzilla, which is the opposite to most American versions of godzilla and similar monster movies. Japan has a very strong culture of avoidance and denial, they're having a very hard time actually talking about world war 2 and the deep trauma its horrors have caused and godzilla is one way to represent this hopeless feeling, the loss and lasting trauma throughout generations. It gives people something to relate to and maybe even heal. Life matters

An ex-roommate of mine and also a huge Godzilla fan (every movie ever made that he can find, plus action figures etc) stated that the concept of Godzilla wasn't just because of the trauma and horrors caused by the war, but also because the Japanese people weren't allowed to talk about the Atomic bombings, nor the radiation poisoning that followed. Godzilla was used as a way to talk about the issues without getting into trouble. Or, at least that's what it was originally. I don't remember the video, but there is a history lesson about the birth of Godzilla somewhere.

Takashi Yamazaki who was the director, writer, and VFX supervisor for this film was told by Steven Spielberg that not only did he love it, he saw this film in IMAX 3 times. He also confirmed that the black substance crawling up Noriko’s neck in the final shot was in fact Godzilla’s cells, implying that she was able to survive because she had mostly regenerated just like Godzilla. And she likely got those cells because the news voiceover said parts of Godzilla came off him when he was being shot at by the tanks.

Fun Fact: So the title Minus One comes from the fact that this is set right after Japan lost the world war, politically economically and socially they are at their absolute lowest they have ever been. And then Godzilla shows up. And THAT’S the Minus One, because just when they thought they couldn’t get any lower, in comes Godzilla. Also, Godzilla‘s atomic breath is inspired by how nuclear reactors can fail. His back plates are like cooling rods, and when they are pulled out the “reactor“ inside him starts to overheat and as he’s inhaling deeply he’s stoking the fire inside of him, then when the plates drop back in it causes the chain reaction which unleashes his breath. Just like what happened at Chernobyl.

You girls have no idea how epic the atomic breath scene was in theaters. The big dooming music, the dorsals ejecting and glowing from the spine, you could feel the sheer hopelessness of the characters. In other movies, a scene like that would be hype. This was jaw-droppingly terrifying.

Godzilla is a deep sea monster whose territory was around Odo Island. The Bikini Atoll Nuclear tests mutated him, increased his size and infused him with atomic power. Once he was bigger he naturally took on a larger territory which included Tokyo. There are cool details in this - like when he uses the atomic breath it actually damages him. That's why he was torn up and smoldering when he destroyed the Takao cruiser and why he was just standing there after he nuked Ginza.

This idea behind “Plan B” was to bring up Godzilla as quickly as possible after it had been at the very bottom of the ocean floor, because the rapid change in pressure would destroy it. They basically hit Godzilla with the most powerful forces of nature twice, and it still didn’t work. Then the final attack was the plane bomb, which no one else really knew about save our protagonist and the mechanic. Fun Fact: this is an Academy Award winning film. Best Visual Effects. It’s the first Godzilla film to win an Oscar.

Godzilla cannot die. He was, or rather it was, once a kind of dinosaur, but it was hit with a nuclear bomb which mutated it. It is in constant pain as it's body dies and regenerates mutating, and twisting. His breath, is the culmination of his nuclear energy that courses through his body. When he unleashes it, it is similar to an atomic bomb. Godzilla has been, and always will be a statement against the horrors of nuclear weapons. A monster, born out of the darkest part of humanity. Nature twisted into the embodiment of malice and aggression.... Unless its the 1960's, then it's your friendly neighborhood godzilla, and he can fly using his breath... the 60's were a weird time.

The 1998 Godzilla movie you saw is considered by most Godzilla fans to be in name only. Completely different monster and lore. This movie is based on the original 1954 Japanese Godzilla movie and Godzilla is basically just a wild animal, no ulterior motive, just pure instinct. The American series of Godzilla movies portray Godzilla as a protector. Very enjoyable, but different.

I hate this argument so much. This film was made mostly by 1 guy as a passion project along with slave labor level crew members. He wasn't granted anything, like most Japanese productions it was low cost not considering inflation. The only reason he was granted "freedom" was because he triple dipped on roles over years, which is very difficult and downright illegal in most western entertainment circles. It's a decent film, but not this great example of artist integrity if you knew how poor production went. Edit: Since people are misconstruing my point, I'm not saying Japan has literal S. labor, just that in comparison to the west wages are far lower in the entertainment industry, hence the gap in production costs. It's silly I have to clarify this.

People who worked on this did not get paid like a US studio would and as you said the director himself was doing a ton on his own including VFX.

I've seen a few explanations for the minus 1, but I think the director said it was a reference to a saying that Japan was returned to zero because of World War II. Godzilla attacking so soon after WWII would set Japan even further back.

That was a great reaction. I am a Japanese born at around the time Godzilla flattened Ginza in this movie, and lived in Tokyo until 1955, so I have total respect for my parents' generation that brought Japan from that (without Godzilla of course) to civilization. I saw this at theatres six times and cried six times. I would also like to mention that I hasten to criticize all the people of a nation for what their Government does.

In the lore, Godzilla usually becomes what he is as a result of the US atomic weapons testing in the Pacific, they showed the most famous of these, Bikini Atoll. I believe he's supposed to be an allegory for the Japanese fear of nuclear destruction, just an unstoppable force coming from the ocean.

PLEASE READ!! One thing that's common mostly in Godzilla lore is that Godzilla originally was a surviving dinosaur species that lived separate from humanity on an island. When the bombs dropped during WW2 apparently it killed Godzilla's family, as a result some time later he returned for revenge now mutated by the bombs and wrecked havoc onto the world. Acting as an avatar of destruction born from humankind's meddling with nature. In Godzilla Minus One what we see first isn't "Godzilla" as we know, but a Godzillasaurus. It was only after the nuclear testing did he become the Godzilla we all know, atomic breath and regeneration and all! Also, his powers didn't come until AFTER he was exposed to heavy radiation. BTW, I'd argue that his greatest ability isn't his size, nor his atomic breath. But truly his highspeed regeneration. That ability is brought up a lot in the japanese films as opposed to the American Monsterverse version, which I feel they need to do better on. Because once they do it opens so many doors for the future of the Monsterverse.

I got to see this twice at the theatre and both times i was left in tears, it's the best film to have well developed characters in any Godzilla movie. The lore has had 70 years to develop, but one of the origins basically mr G was a local ancient legend similar to Nesi the lock nes monster . Suppose to be from the time of the dinosaurs and feed on the planets natural radiation but as the planets radiation decayed he went to the bottom of the deepest ocean where there was still radiation. Than when man started to test nuclear weapons and build power stations it drew him once again to the surface. The regeneration abilities were introduced to explain how he can withstand modern weapons

Toho is rereleasing Minus One and Minus Color to theaters this November in celebration of Godzilla's 70th anniversary. The OG film came out in November 1954. The rerelease will include 13 extras minutes of behind the scenes footage.

Kamikaze's pronunciation is "Car Me Car They (か Ka み Mi か Ka ぜ Ze)", not "Car Mar Car Zee (か Ka ま Ma か Ka ぜ Ze)". Godzilla never eat humans in all Movie series. This is a most important rule of Godzilla.

Godzilla in the Japanese films is almost always a pre-historic creature that survived American nuclear testing after WW2 like we see here. This particular version survived and mutated due to it's rapid regeneration ability. The American version is similarly an ancient creature, however, it's far older than this one and is already over 300 ft tall by the time we first encounter him, and no they're not connected.

I like how much more simple the portrayal of Godzilla is in this film compared to others. He may not be the tallest, but he sure is the most terrifying because he has the shortest fuse and will see your very existence as an insult before waking up and choosing violence.

"Why is Godzilla so mad?" - Because he was the last of his kind, until the humans came with their war and their nukes, and made him the first of his kind. Godzilla, at least the Japanese versions of him, was always a metaphor for the nukes that the US dropped on Japan.

Good reaction! I would suggest reacting to the Monsterverse which is the name of the current Hollywood Godzilla movies. So far there are five and a six one coming in 2027. They are Godzilla (2014), Kong Skull Island, Godzilla King of the Monsters (2019), Godzilla vs Kong, & Godzilla x Kong The New Empire. Minus One is it’s own thing and a remake of the original 1954 film which is why Godzilla was the antagonist and showed his OG backstory. Godzilla is a unique character because he can be anything depending on the story. Some versions he’s a good guy or anti hero and some timelines like in Minus One, he’s a antagonist but a tragic one because he never asked to be mutated. He was minding his business and the atomic bomb not only changed him but traumatized him so he’s in constant pain/anger due to the radiation which is why he attacks cities. He knows humanity was the cause of it. You even see that he only attacked the soldiers in the island cause they shot at him but didn’t with our main character because he sense he wasn’t a threat. Overtime he slowly change and became more of a anti-hero.

Godzilla is both natural and science born. The first form we see on the island is a natural form. Some kind of dinosaur that has survived into “modern” day. Big and powerful, but just a giant dinosaur The nuclear testing the US did in the Pacific (in this movie, Operation Crossroads in 1946) enveloped Godzilla in radiation; mutating him. Grows much larger, his natural regenerative powers are accelerated, and the atomic breath: all gifts of his baptism in nuclear fire This, more or less, has been the origin story for Godzilla for 70 years. Some iterations do something different, but this is the usual story Godzilla understands and knows that we burned him with our nuclear testing. He hates humanity for our sins. And wants to destroy us all for it He turns 70 years old on November 3rd this year. Happy Birthday to The King

a little detail that most audience's don't pick up on is that there were NO ejection seats in WW2. that's a common idea for us modern people but it only got traction in the jet age. so for the characters in this story, this is much more of a surprise than it is for us.

Nice video, first time here for me ✌🏼, I'd like to clear some doubts you asked in the video 😊 1. This Godzilla is based on the original Japanese movie, so this is a dinosaur-like creature that lived on its island but due to war he got nuked and mutated into the monster we see next, bigger, stronger and with resentment to humanity for damaging it and its home. 2. The "heat ray" it's actually called atomic breath and it's something the big G has had since the first movie. The '98 film didn't gave Godzilla this characteristic breath and it's part of the many critics that people have against that movie. 3. That mark on Noriko in the end is indeed some kind of poisoning caused by Godzilla, in reference to the atomic bombs that were dropped in Japan and affected people who survived the blast (for Godzilla it's a representation of the horrors of the atomic weapons). 4. I really hope you get into the monster movies, you can start mostly wherever you want for there's a lot of them. Old Godzilla movies aren't precisely a cinematic universe and are divided in ages (Showa, Heisei, Millennium); on the contrary, the Monsterverse from Legendary is a cinematic universe that starts with the 2014 Godzilla movie, but it's a northamerican representation of the character so don't expect to see the same as you did here on Minus One (it's not a bad thing, but you have to separate them as different universes)

As the series progressed, so did Godzilla, changing into a less destructive and more heroic character. •This incarnation of Godzilla harbored strong grudge toward humanity for nuclear tests which irradiated him in the first place not unlike the original iteration of the character, though his case is much worse as he was already hostile towards humans prior to his mutation. •In the 1954 film, Godzilla is portrayed as a tragic monster who lashed out at humanity by destroying any boats that he encountered and later rampaging across and destroying Tokyo in retaliation for the destruction of his home and death of his family by an American H-bomb test. •Godzilla is buoyant. It isn't actually "standing" on anything, but instead it has a natural ability to go vertical due to its aquatic nature using a swim bladder and treading water to stay vertical in the deep sea.

I like how they didn't draw too much attention to the little mark on Noriko's neck. I assume that was some kind of regenerative tissue that was embedded into her body when she was 'blown away' after Godzilla's ray attack first used. I imagine she was buried under rubble for a period of time as she slowly re-grew until they rescued her. Kekkon omedetō! 😂

G in this (and the 1954 film) was a natural creature, a deep sea amphibious mutated dinosaur. Then when they show the Bikini Atoll scene he gets nuked at that test and becomes a gigantic radioactive monster who is really pissed off because, you know, they dropped a nuke on him.

In the first Godzilla move that came out in 1954, Godzilla was a metaphor for the dangers of nuclear weapons and nuclear testing. Both being devastating in its destruction and unstoppable once released. Nuclear testing is what mutated a dinosaur-like creature into the larger, more powerful and dangerous version of Godzilla, and his atomic breath and radioactive aura is a result of the mutation caused by the radioactive fallout of the testing. Godzilla in the '54 film and in Minus 1 is Nature's retribution for mankind's reckless tinkering with atomic energy. If you decide to watch the original Godzilla movie after watching Minus 1, be sure to see the original 1954 Japanese cut, not the US cut featuring Raymond Burr that came out in '56 (I think). The Japanese cut contains much of the anti-nuclear dialogue that was cut out of the US version. The US government was trying to sell the "virtues" of nuclear energy to US citizens and so they cut out most, if not all, of the anti-nike messages. Plus, they wanted to shoehorn in a recognizable American face in the movie. After seeing Godzilla '54, then check out the US '56 version for comparison. I believe both films are available to view for free on KZbin.

Minus One is how WW2 brought Japan back to Zero and this is taking them further back. The plan is the ocean isn't about him being cold or bringing him back up to shoot him. Extreme pressure changes are very destructive. Bringing him down to that depth quickly should really do damage. Then using the inflatables to bring him back up isn't to shoot him but to put him through extreme depressurisation. Divers have to be careful not to come up too fast. They're giving Godzilla the bends haha

Godzilla was rumored to be the result of the atomic bomb tests that were conducted in places like Bikini Atol in that little part of the movie that started reporting his sightings. I think he attacks because he's constantly in pain and angry from all that nuclear contamination that's also the source of his mutation and power. Tragic.. but I believe it was created to illustrate how horrific & barbaric the effects of nuclear testing were at the time. Why is it called Godzilla Minus One? At the end of WWII Japan was devastated by the Allied bombings and was reduced to Zero culturally, industrially etc. Then along comes Godzilla and takes it down another notch, Minus One. One of the criticisms of Godzilla movies is that the human aspect of the movie is almost not needed and is a bit of an afterthought. With Godzilla Minus One you could almost take Godzilla out of the movie, and you would still have a good drama about survivor guilt, rebuilding a life and making a family from the broken pieces left after the war. Then you add Godzilla, and you have a great monster movie with human characters that you are invested in and care about what happens to them.

So the scene where the atom bomb was being tested and you seeing godzilla after it, that was how he transformed into the version you see in the rest of the film. Originally he was some type of dinosaur. Once the radiation came in thats when he became the monster we all love (btw yall need to watch shin godzilla next! Its a completely different take on godzilla with horror elements) Also at 32:29 the reporters on the roof is a nod to the original 1954 godzilla with reporters on the tower And as for the black mark.. those are godzilla cells (which come and go through the years with different purposes but in this case thats how she healed so well)

This is the first movie since Across the Spider-Verse that hooked me like nobody's business. I was thoroughly engaged by the story, rooting for the characters, getting hyped, emotional and hoping they would succeed. A movie with a pretty simple plot, but executed so well that I was glad to be watching it in the big room.

I am not sure how Godzilla came about in the movies. Nor am I sure if it is ever explained in the comics. As for the mark on Noriko's neck. The director said in an interview that the mark was g cells (Godzilla cells) which is how she survived. The budget for the movie was 15 million USD and grossed 150.9 million USD. To say that the crew that made this did a fantastic job would be an understatement. Now if you plan to watch the Godzilla movies in what is known as the monsterverse the order is Godzilla from 2014, Kong Skull Island, Godzilla King of Monsters, Godzilla vs Kong and then Godzilla X Kong the New Empire. This was good reaction, and I look forward to seeing more reactions in the future.

My only warning is that this movie can set a very high expectation. While there are hits and misses, I feel that this is one of the best but do not that deter you because there are other gems out there.

Godzilla is likely angry due to being in constant pain from the nuclear tests that changed his form at the Bikini Atoll. He was a primordial being known to certain islanders and he got transformed into a giant behemoth.

When making Jaws, Steven Spielberg inspired himself with the original Godzilla film. Now, you can see the director of this movie clearly inspired himself with Jaws for the boat scene. Spielberg even told him he loved the movie so much he went to see it 3 times in theaters. If I become a director and Spielberg says that to me, that would be better than any award on Earth.

A great equivalent to this movie is Peter Jackson's King Kong, from 2005. It is, as well as Godzilla Minus One, a complete retell of the original version. And by seeing this both films first, you guys would have the perfect foundation for exploring any other Kaiju movies. Because, there are the two kings of the monsters: King Kong and Godzilla. Both of them got their main theme. Kinda their origin story. And King Kong, from 2005, brings you back to the main point of the monster. Just as Godzilla Minus One did 😉

Technically, you can watch most of the Godzilla films in any order. The majority of them are standalone film's. But I'd suggest watching the original 1954 classic before anything else. Godzilla was an allegory used for nuclear weapons. And to show the devastating effects and hardships Japan had to endure after the bombing or Hiroshima and Nagasaki. But if you do want to watch something more connected. You can watch the new American iterations of Godzilla films, also known as the Monsterverse franchise. You'd start with Godzilla (2014), Kong: Skull Island(2017), Godzilla King of the Monsters(2019), Godzilla vs. Kong(2021), and Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire(2024). There's also a tv show connected to the Monsterverse franchise called, Monarch Legacy of Monsters. Which is set after the events of Godzilla(2014). Glad you guys enjoyed Minus One it is definitely one of my favorite Godzilla film's!
